Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright seeking interns

Description

Selected students will learn the communication and problem solving skills necessary to become a public servant. Interns will be involved in a number of functions including, but not limited to, legislative research, constituent services, event planning, administrative tasks, and community organizing. All intern positions are unpaid.

Requirements

Applicants must be sophomores, juniors or seniors in college and willing to commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week.

Assembly Member Harvey Epstein is recruiting applicants for an internship with the New York State Assembly. This role is a great opportunity to see for yourself the inner workings of a government office. If your passion lies within our state government and affecting policy then we strongly recommend you apply.

We strive to be a pillar of support for our constituents in the 74th Assembly District. Our district covers the East Village, Lower East Side, Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village, Murray Hill, Tudor City, and the United Nations. Our office introduces and passes progressive legislation to move this state forward. We act as liaisons for our fellow community members, working alongside the elderly, disabled, low-income folks, and advocate for all other local community members and issues.

The Assembly Member has elevated Disability Rights to be among the top five issues to which his office will devote the most time, energy and resources.  Qualified applicants may have the opportunity to work alongside the disability community liaison as well as other community organizations.

You will be responsible for:

  • Working with constituents
  • Writing constituent reports and contacting relevant agencies
  • Writing memos and emails
  • Helping coordinate events and meetings with the Assembly Member
  • Working alongside other elected officials offices to coordinate interoffice materials
  • Helping with social media

Requirements:

  • Energetic, detail oriented, and passionate about politics or government
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel/Google Docs and Sheets
  • We welcome applications from a diverse range of learning disciplines and areas of concentration.
  • Successful candidates will be self-starters with excellent communication, research and applicable technical skills.

NY State Senator Serrano’s Office in East Harlem seeking interns

NY State Senator Serrano’s office seeking qualified candidate for exciting and immersive internship opportunity.

The internship would be unpaid and/or for school credit and the individual would get a feel for all aspects of a government office. The intern would act as a key representative for our New York State Senate office, responding to constituent requests for assistance (in person, via phone, email and mail), Attending community meetings, helping to explore and draft new legislation and working in communications by helping us write and research statements and talking points.

Major Responsibilities

Serve as a representative at community events/meetings

Take calls/emails/letters/visits from constituents seeking assistance.

Serve as liaison to other government offices, community groups, and labor groups.

Meet with constituents in the district office and on location.

Stay on top of current news, major developments in the district.

Assist in exploring and drafting new legislation

Working with the Communications Director on talking points and statements

Paul A. Volcker Careers in Government Essay Contest

CUNY Office of Continuing Ed & Workforce Programs is partnering with The Volcker Alliance to hold an essay contest for CUNY students in Junior standing in Bachelors programs.  The contest will ask students about their understanding of public services and interest in careers in the public sector.

Winners will receive:

Rep19 is a start-up organization serving the needs of women in elected office. Dozens of organizations help women candidates running for office, but none have focused on the skills required to be effective in office, win re-election and rise in leadership. Rep19 has served over 600 elected women in the past 6 months. Twitter and IG is @Rep19Women. Rep19 is looking for the following skills. Applicant need not have mastered all of the skills listed but must be skilled in at least 3 of the following:

  • Research to identify elected women
  • Outreach to elected women
  • Website editing and posting (Squarespace)

Caucus CUNY Scholars Internship Program

The Caucus CUNY Scholars Program is a local internship program for students who are interested in the service of the New York State Legislature. The Program allows students to learn about the work performed by the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus, as well as the services provided by the New York State Legislature to communities of need in the City of New York.

The Caucus CUNY Program was established for students who wish to study community service in New York State but who are unable to relocate to Albany for a full spring semester. Selected students are assigned to the district offices of New York State legislators comprising membership on the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus. The assignment of students to district offices is based on their residence, policy interests, skills sets, etc. Once assigned, students perform substantive tasks such as constituent case management, legislative research and assistance and a host of other responsibilities.

KEY POINTS:

  • Students intern 10-15 hours per week.
  • Students must have completed 30 credits and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Students must submit at least one confidential faculty recommendation and an official transcript with their application.
  • All majors may apply

The New York State Assembly Intern Committee sponsors the Session Internship at the State Capital starting every January. The SESSION INTERNSHIP offers college students a chance to participate in state government and the legislative process through a well-structured practical learning experience. Assembly Session Internships give students an advantage in today’s job market, providing real government experience in a comprehensive academic Program.

As part of the Session Internship academic requirements, Interns complete: an Orientation; a work/learning contract and regular evaluations; an academic course taught by the Professors-in-Residence with required readings; discussion groups and a major research paper; Issue Policy Forums scheduled on Wednesdays, which includes evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and the Assembly Intern Committee’s Annual Mock Session and Awards Ceremony.

Program Highlights:

  1. Get a $6,200 stipend
  2. Stay in Albany, working minimum 30 hours a week
  3. 12 credits will be allocated: 3 internship credits (POL 5452) and 3 “Special Topics” courses, for example, Legislative Politics, Urban Politics, NYC Politics.

  2. Two letters of recommendation
  3. A concise writing sample which provides a good indication of the student’s research and communication abilities
