Week #8- Kemara Gopeesingh

A.) One new thing I learned is the phrase “saturation in media,”  which basically means the amount of time we spend on social media. Another thing I learned was the word “Exigence.” Exigence means a problem that needs to be addressed. The last thing I learned was that ethos and pathos is used specifically in advertisements for credibility and persuasion. An example they gave was, “…a commercial for men’s deodorant that tells you that you’ll be irresistible to women if you use their product. This campaign doesn’t just ask you to buy the product, though. It also asks you to trust the company’s credibility, or ethos, and to believe the messages they send about how men and women interact, about sexuality, and about what constitutes a healthy body.”

B.)”Media is one of the most important places where this kind of analysis needs to happen.” In todays’ time false information can easily be put out there, just to get fame or just to make money off of it. Once it is out there it is hard to tell whats real from whats not despite the fact that instagram tells you when its false information. This is why scam calls occur and why crime rates have increased.

C.)One specific way this essay will affect the rhetorical analysis I am currently working on is by making sure I fact check my information, before actually including it in my writing piece. This will help me get a better understanding of ethos, where I would  better understand what websites I should trust and who I should believe.

One Response to Week #8- Kemara Gopeesingh

  1. JSylvor says:

Kemara, Thanks for these notes. When she suggests that we are saturated with media, she means that our lives are completely full with various rhetorical messages, all designed to work on us in some way. So even a casual post on social media, for example, is designed (even if it might be subconscious on the part of the poster) to convey a particular message and evoke a particular set of responses in the viewer. She is suggesting that we would benefit from being aware of all this.
