On Monday, I came to my day off to attend this workshop at school for this blog post because I didn’t want to be like everyone else and write about MOMA. When I walked in, I thought that it was going to be like any old workshop, where she was going to be boring and that I was going to be stuck in that small room for an hour and a half. I felt really out of place at first because I didn’t know anyone. But I soon realized that out of the whole room, there were some freshman in the room, so I wasn’t alone. Ms. Kaitlyn Riley, the speaker at this workshop, was very informative and made sure that we understood what she was saying. She gave us a packet with a bunch of sample resumes that we can model ours after. She made sure to tell us that having an objective on our resume is stupid and that it shouldn’t be there. And she repeated that enough times so that it is permanently etched into my brain that she didn’t like objectives and that most employers don’t really look at it. I think that I was the only freshman to have a resume and bring it with them, too. I thought it was a good idea. If you go to a resume writing seminar, don’t you think it’s a good idea to bring your resume so that you can revise it? Well I guess not for the seniors. Since not enough people had their resumes, we didn’t peer review them but she left plenty of time for any questions anyone had. She also took the time to give me some suggestions on how to improve my resume. This workshop was kind of boring without friends but I did learn a lot.
Beta Alpha Psi GIM
One of the biggest organizations in colleges are fraternities and sororities. Seeing that many of my friends who were a year or two older join these, I wanted to find out what all the fuss was about. Me and a couple friends decided to go to a Beta Alpha Psi’s general interest meeting. This was a business honor society frat, which really caught my attention. At first, the meeting was looking really slow, but as soon as they brought in the free pizza, things started picking up. They had a lot of members within the business field who’ve had the chance to work for many prominent businesses such as J.P. Morgan, Goldman Sachs, PWB, and so on. It was in a way impressive to me that they had so many connections to such big companies. They would continue to restate that this fraternity was a very prestigious organization that contains many benefits. I knew for a fact that this fraternity is truly a place where if you put in the work, you would be able to suceed and reach further than if you were to try alone. With the help of the experienced members, landing a job, scoring that interview, and overall confidence in yourself is sure to come. However, you needed to maintain a 3.5 grade point average, a minimum of 12 credits, and a one time ninety five dollar fee. I thought everything was alright but the ninety five dollar fee. Nevertheless, it was a very interesting meting that I don’t regret attending because I kind of got to know what some frats are about and what makes them unique at Baruch college. It’s clear that this fraternity is a very serious fraternity and has it’s perks and benefits. With all this said, I appreciated the free pizza they gave us, but I don’t think I’m going to join this fraternity.
Student Life – Latinx Heritage Month Mocktails & Paint
Today I decided to go to the Latinx Heritage Motnh event. Since I was born in Colombia, and have lived my entire life amongst the Latino culture, I’ve always been interested in attending these types of events. Whether it’s to meet new people of different cultures, learn something I did not know, or just share with my fellow Latinx people, I’m always looking for these types of events.
When I got to the event, I had to wait a little while before the organizers set up. I met up with a friend I hadn’t seen since middle school, which was kind of surprising. Even though he’s half Mexican and half Phillipino, there were others who weren’t necessarily Latino that were there to learn something new, or meet new people. Once the organizers arrived and set up, I realized that this was the second Latinx Heritage Month event, and my friend and I did not sign up for it. However, the organizers were kind enough to let us stay after everyone that signed up for the event signed in.
They served a variety of foods, from flan, churros and other types of pastries. I had flan and a churro , which were pretty tasty. Once everyone was settled, Professor Miguel Trellis began a mini-lecture about a Latin artstyle called Mola. This, to me, was an interesting type of art style that I never knew about, which is basically patterns of geometric shapes used in textiles. The art itself was, in all honesty, beautiful and attention-grabbing. After the Professor’s short presentation, we began painting our own type of Mola patterns, which was pretty funny, since a lot of us don’t really paint much, if at all.
It was definitely a memorable experience, and I learned a few things I hadn’t known before. It’s these types of events that make me enjoy my time at Baruch, and I’ll definitely be looking forward to attending more events like these.
Student Life- Latinx Heritage Month Opening Ceremony
Last week I got an email on Student Life Weekly News, and when I seen Latinx Heritage Month, I was intrigued. I’ve always been interested in learning and trying new things especially when it comes to different cultures. On Thursday, September 7, I thought it would captivating to attend the Latinx Heritage Opening Ceremony and so I did with a friend. From the moment we walked through the doors of the Newman Vertical building, we could hear cultural music playing, coming from the second floor lobby. There was a banner hanging on the second floor with flags from different Latino countries. From the time we stepped off the escalator, we were immediately greeted by members who were energized and full of excitement. They provided us with information about the club and about Latino Heritage month.
There was a variety of food that was of Latino culture that the club had provided for those that attended the event. Some of the foods that we tried were empanadas, juice, Mamita’s ices, and fried sweet plantains, all of which tasted really good. There was a DJ that was playing music. The music was really fast-paced and upbeat. There were a lot of people dancing. They had a dance competition and played their own version of musical chairs. There was a good amount of people there. Everyone was really friendly. It was great to experience something like this within a school. The vibe was great, the environment was great and so were the people. By attending this event,it gave me a chance to get to know my friend and to also make some new friends and become more informed about a different culture. It was fun attending this event and I look forward to going to more upcoming Baruch events and meeting new people and learning new things.
Visiting the MoMa
Today I decided on the day I have off from school to go to the MoMa. I decided to drag my girlfriend along for the journey as she was the one who I asked to take the pictures for me. At the MoMa I saw a couple of good paintings but one that stood out to me the most was this bronze piece of work. This was of a bike in a canvas and everything painted as bronze. This reminded me of the summers I would used to ride bikes all over the bronx to spend my days. The bronze of the painting itself reminded me of the musky and humid days that summer would bring along. The painting itself spoke to me, as it just made me reminiscent of good old days before college was even near and when life was stress free.
The MoMa was a good experience, it was a place where there were many different kinds of art that would generally interest you. They have a good variety of art work, which makes you see and realize the differences of art throughout time. Different time frames have different kind of art there is as I seen a pop art from the 70’s took a famous picture of the deceased president John F. Kennedy. There is a form of art that would capture your eye. As I learned that street art is the type of art that captures my eye and also art that has figure such as the bronze painting that i saw with the bike that makes me remind myself my past.
The MoMa is up for interpretation, and take it as is. It might not be the best art museum there is but it is a great window of opportunity to get involved with the world of art and see the different types of art that presented from sculptures using scraps of metal to blank canvases with simple lines through it. Each art has its meaning and it own category in art but it will help you see the world of art and hope that it will make you more involved with it just like I am with this experience.
Blog #1 Student Life: InterVarsity Christian Fellowship
For the past two Thursdays I have attended the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship club meetings. I originally went to the first meeting just so that I could join a club for freshman seminar. The members were very kind as we played a few games to break the ice. For these games, each group had to organize themselves into a certain order that was based upon whatever the leaders said (ex: size order, birthdays). Afterwards the leaders went on to explain the purpose of the club while providing food for their potentially newest members.
The following week I went to the club’s second meeting on the 9th floor in room 155 in the Newman Vertical Campus. They provided us with penne vodka, which was amazing, and I got the chance to talk to different leaders that I hadn’t seen the week before. I learned about how the club is separated into two separate groups that meet outside the usual club meetings. The guys and girls have their own separate get-togethers to discuss life. The guys group, the “ministry”, will meet every two weeks to discuss their lives and possible struggles. I discussed with the ministry leader, a senior currently pursuing a degree in Computer Information Systems (CIS), along with some of the other leaders of the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship to learn the basics of what the club is about.
Being a part of this club provides me with people who I can talk to about personal and academic interests. I enjoyed talking to them about the degrees they are currently attempting to obtain. I plan on attending the next meeting this Thursday, where there will hopefully be more pasta, and will ask around for some potential academic advisement on what to minor in, and whether or not I should go for a second business minor.
Visiting MoMA
As an art enthusiast, it would only be natural that my first blog post for Baruch would be regarding a museum. Students of CUNY schools are offered several choices with museums – most if not all are free, to name a few: the MoMA, Brooklyn Museum, Cloisters, and Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Of the vast options presented to me, I chose to visit the MoMA. Born and raised in New York City, MoMA belonged to the rare category of museums I have not yet visited, therefore I was quite excited, as it was significantly more famous than other galleries I have been to.
Touring the MoMA today was not life-changing or significant in anyway – it was honestly a letdown and for lack of a better word, sellout. Being one of the most famous museums in the Big Apple, one would assume there must be something this place has to offer that others simply lack. However, from my experience today, I learned that there was nothing to take away from this museum. I do not mean to bash art pieces displayed at the museum in any way, I do understand that each piece its own meaning according to the creator, yet there was just nothing on-par to other museums.
One of the only, and most notable pieces in the MoMA would be Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. Upon arriving to the Fifth Floor where the piece was located, the first thing you would notice is the amount of tourist present, all taking selfies around the famous piece. Undeniably, I did become one of them for the sake for this assignment. Now, if one was to compare the difference in spectators between Starry Night and other pieces present, one would find a considerable difference in quantity. Well, this observation might simply be due to the difference in popularity of the paintings, however I would like to attribute it to the poor quality of other art pieces and terrible structuring of the museum itself.
I do suggest that you experience MoMA for yourself to understand what I mean. With art being subjective, you might like it more than I do however, I doubt my feelings towards the place will change anytime soon.
Delta Sigma Pi GIM
For the sake of trying to make new connections into the business world, I decided to stop by DSP’s 1st general interest meeting. Because they have a strong alumnus group and a niche for marketing I figured why not check it out. They served food and refreshments which is always a plus, and they all seemed to be very laid back and willing to answer any questions. As the freshman year goes on, Im hoping to explore all the opportunities that Baruch has to offer! Being new to Baruch and the city life has truly been quite the experience. I really appreciate the fact that there are club hours so that students can go explore any groups that pique their interests. The concatenation of classes can be stressful, especially with the cumulative workload. The ability to just walk around and feel welcomed is a pleasant experience. If I were to choose something that I love most about the club hours is that the hallways always smell of delicious food. Buying lunch everyday can get expensive, so class hopping for meals has been my go to. In regards to delta sigma pi’s food selection, they have been relatively on point. Although the first time they ordered chicken a little bit earlier than when the meeting started so it was kind of cold and disappointing. Im hoping to rush and get accepted into this fraternity and meet new people and have people to actually talk to. The marketing portion of the group was small in comparison to the finance and accounting members. But because its a smaller group, the hands on and attentiveness of the bros has been second to none! I’m glad that classes like freshman seminar exist because it forces us to get out of our shells and try new things.
Baruch Accounting Society
On Thursday I attended the general meeting of the Accounting Society Club. While I am undecided, I thought it would be interesting to attend a club in a potential major. When i entered into the room, everyone from the club were very friendly and had pizza and cookies laid out for potential club members. They started off with a picture game, which lasted around half the time we were there, and then the club president had a slideshow presentation about what the club offered and what the members could sign up to be (such as participating in little subcommittees). Joining this club, me and many other member will be able to meet potential big business that would maybe lead on to an internship and even potentially a job offer at their firms. They talked about every possibility available such as meeting with big corporations, having a group resume writing session, mock interview sessions and much more. This club also focuses on giving back to the community, not just focusing on the career, through charitable walks and donating to different organizations. Members have said that companies actually look and are interested in those who give back to the community. This club seems to be very interesting in the fact they focus in not only the career path, but also in giving back to the community. Each member seemed eager for you to join their subcommittees and even talked about stepping up into getting a larger role for the club. They all seemed very happy to be apart of the club and encouraged everyone to feel the same way. Everyone seemed very genuine and willing to answer every and all questions anyone had. Even though, this club didn’t seem like a fit for me, there were hundreds of more possible suitors for this club!
Blog #1 – Student Life – Latinx Heritage Month Event
Last week I got an email from Baruch Student Life. The introduction of the Latinx Heritage Month event is very attractive and I am very interested in it. I always have a passion to explore new things, meet different people, and learn different cultures. Therefore, I thought this would be a great opportunity for me.
When I walked into the William and Anita Newman Vertical building, I could hear some pop music coming down from the second floor. I saw many Latin America countries’ flags hanging up there, people walked around, talked with friends, and took pictures. The second floor was bustling with excitement. I never had a chance to feel Latino cultures, but today, I can really feel it and enjoy the atmosphere that they brought to me. Also, they provided free food and gave out more information to me and my friends. We had “fried banana” which they provided for us, its taste was good. I wanted to get that ice-lolly but they gave them all out already.
I took some pictures with my friends together and we continued to walk around. More and more people came over. They hosted and played a game called “The Musical Chair”. It was so fun while they were playing because they didn’t play that with chairs but asked people to find a partner while the music stops. The winner can get a prize if he or she wins the game. It was interesting.
I heard so many familiar pop music while I was there. But I do not know what those songs are because I do not know Spanish. The only song I know is that Vivir Mi Vida. “I’m gonna laugh, I’m gonna dance.” These words really described my experience at the event. I look forward to attending more events like this. It is so fun!
