For my enrichment workshop and blog post I will be talking about how I attended the Museum of Sex in New York City. I got in with a discount with my student ID. I went to various different exhibits within the museum and learned a lot at each of them. One exhibit I found fascinating was the sex of different animals. It talked about the history of each different species and how they produce life overtime. It was fascinating to learn about how life is created from humans to animals. I learned how special procreation really is. I also went to an exhibit learning about the femininity of New York fashion week. While I was at the museum I met a friend! Her name was Elizabeth and she was so nice, we went to the gift shop afterwards together to get a T-shirt souvenir. Elizabeth and I also got dinner later in the evening at Chipotle. I learned a lot about her, and she learned a lot about me. We are getting lunch next week one day again! I had a great time going to the museum I learned a lot and I also made a friend. This experience helped me to be more social and also learn about my community here in New York City.

Museum of Sex
For this week’s blog post I visited the Museum of Sex with my boyfriend. I have to admit that this experience, by far, has been the most interesting museum visit I’ve had in nearly ten years. The various exhibitions definitely opened our eyes to unpopular topics such as sexual history, sexual art as well as the different sexual approaches and habits of animals throughout nature.
After we presented our Groupon and wrapped our wrists with the wristbands, Sebastian and I made our way up to the first exhibit: ObjectXXX. On the second floor, this room was lined with displays of quite interesting artifacts from the Museum of Sex archives. The artifacts consisted of erotic toys, fetishized outfits and vintage forms of protection. The second floor also contained the famous erotic bouncy house which we decided to skip over for time’s sake.
Sebastian and I continued on to walk through the exhibit showing the sexual habits of animals in their natural habitats. We (especially Sebastian) found it appalling that humans aren’t the only creatures who have homosexual and other exotic tendencies. Other creatures of the animal kingdom go about having sex with more than one partner and with the same gender without having to deal with social stigmas and judgement as do many people in our society.
Prior to ending our experience at the museum’s store we swiftly went through multiple art galleries based on feminist artists’ views of sexualization and historical aspects of feminism, showing the audience how we’ve developed our current views and approaches to expressing ourselves as strong, independent, cultured women.
MoMa Visit
I had the pleasure of visiting the MoMA this weekend with some of my friends. It was nice to visit one of the many museums that we have here in our city as well as use the on of the many benefits I have by being a Cuny student. This was my first time actually visiting this museum and I was surprised by the intricacies of all the exhibits. At first I thought it was just going to be a basic art museum where none of the works really catch the viewer’s eyes or make an impression, but I was honestly impressed. The first thing that you see when you enter the exhibition floor is a full scale model of the MoMa itself. It was a hundred percent accurate to the smallest details such as the stairs going from floor to floor and the square with benches outside the museum itself. They had countless pieces from various time periods. Each piece had a complex story to tell about the world during the time and place it was made. Not only did the museum contain paintings that jumped out at you, the MoMa also had sculptures that depicted faces of people, majestic animals, even the moons and stars of space. Then if sculptures and paintings aren’t your preference they have a section for photography and film. I enjoyed my visit to the MoMa immensely and I would recommend everyone to visit as well.
My Visit To The Writing Center
This incredible photo of me was taken rushing out of the writing center to get to work on time. My trip to the writing center was definitely an interesting one. The first time I had visited I got to learn about the different resources that the school offered and what kinds of tools I could take advantage of. I also learned just how packed the appointments are for the writing center. After going to the writing center for help on my English paper, I was able to learn a lot. I gained a new perspective on my writing, and since it was a personal essay, I realized that I could incorporate aspects that I hadn’t even thought of before. Because of this experience I now know more methods for my writing and how to use them in order to improve my grade. If I hadn’t gone to the writing center I definitely think I would be missing out on a lot. Just to know that there’s a really great place on campus for me to be able to get help for my writing assignments really helps me out. I will probably be more secure in my future assignments now that I know there is a place where I can go for extra help, and it will hopefully make the process of writing papers a lot less stressful for me. I think that after this experience I have seen what the writing center can do for me and it is definitely a resource that I will be using in the future.
Museum of Mathematics
For my second blog post I decided to got to the Museum of Mathematics. The main reason I chose this museum was because of its proximity to Baruch, being only a 5 minute walk away. Being that math has always been my achilles heal in school I wasn’t expecting to have a good time. As I walked in to the museum I was expecting my visit to be free but as it turns out, the school ID isn’t as magical as it seems as I still had to shell out 11 dollars. At this point I was a bit upset because not only was I somewhere I didn’t really want to be but I also had to pay to be there. I began to look around at the various exhibits in the museum and realized that this museum had two floors and over 20 exhibits. The first exhibit on my right was an exhibit about number lines. My brain instantly thought, “skip” but I decided to wander in just in case there was something worth seeing. As it turns out the exhibit explained in simplicity exactly what number lines are and what their practical life application is. The next exhibit I looked at was actually pretty cool. Basically every visitor can design their own shape virtually, and if the shape is unique enough, it is selected to be 3d printed and put on display. My design was an 18 sided die but unfortunately it wasn’t selected to be displayed. After I finished my attempt at a cool shape I realized that I had been working on it for almost an hour and that it was time for me to leave. I guess I kind of had fun in the end, but I still wouldn’t go back.
Blog post #2
During my class break on Thursday, i got to visit the gym center in Baruch. I really enjoy spending time in the gym because it helps me to relieve stress and I find myself not thinking about school or any other activities during my workout. When I went down to the gym I noticed the huge variety of equipment, from stair climbers to treadmills. Additionally, there was equipment for upper body as well, I got a chance to work on my shoulders and arms, then I switched off to running and ran around 6 miles, while I run I like to listen to music or simply just think to myself about whatever comes to my mind, that time I was listening to music. I also met James who suggested me a workout plan, he broke down the days in a week I should spend on my legs, my upper body, and overall cardio. Overall, I really enjoyed my trip to the Baruch health and fitness center and will be looking forward to coming back there whenever I have free time. Next time I am hoping to visit the handball court or a swimming pool, I find it amazing that there are so many different activities provided for the students. (200 words)
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Although most museums don’t seem that interesting the Met has a lot of different exhibits to offer, it is sure to have an exhibit for everybody’s interests. The Met has art pieces from many different time periods and eras. You can see contemporary art, or ancient statues of former rulers of ancient civilizations. When walking through the different exhibits you are able to see different cultures expressed their beliefs through art, and how a cultures art changed over time. The exhibit that I explored was Cristobal De Villalpando Mexican painter of Baroque. Most of Cristobal’s art focused around Christian bible stories, and how he interpreted them through art. One of the most interesting pieces in the exhibit was a huge painting showing Moses and the brazen serpent, and the Transfiguration of Jesus. These two images showed a juxtaposition of the Old and New Testament. The exhibit on a whole allowed me to see how a artist interpreted the bible hundreds of years ago. Exploring this exhibition allowed me to see the paintings of one of Mexico’s most accomplished artists, and to explore Mexican culture which I have little experience with. I’m glad one of our options for our blog post was to go to a museum, because it forced me to explore something that I didn’t have much interest in but ended up learning a lot about cultures unfamiliar to me through art.
Trip to the MoMA
For my second blog post I took a trip to the Museum of Modern Art and viewed the “Is Fashion Modern?” Exhibition. This was my first trip to the MoMA that I can remember and I thought it would’ve have been one of the most experiences I would ever have but surprisingly it wasn’t. When I heard the title of the exhibition, “Is Fashion Modern?”, I assumed it would primarily be about old timey clothes and what they meant to the people who wore them. But instead the exhibition featured mostly pieces of clothing that are still worn today. The exhibition featured items like Yohji Yamamoto (y-3) pieces, a simple white t-shirt, yoga pants, a Bruce Lee tracksuit and sports jerseys. Some of the more interesting items in the exhibition were the three pairs of Air force 1’s, which I learned have been released in 2000+ cololrways, and a set of bandanas on display,I was unaware of how much the meaning behind simple Bandanas has changed throughout history. Another cool thing at the museum was this t-shirt creator that was on display. My trip to the MoMA wasn’t what I expected it to be. I expected myself to bored the whole time when instead I was actually intrigued by what the exhibition had to offer.
My Visit to the American Museum of Natural History
This past Friday, I was able to convince some friends to go back into the city with me and entertain me while i filled the requirement for my FRO class, but the museum ended up being far more entertaining than expected. Everything there, whether it was a part of an exhibit or not, was eye catching. One of the areas, that was probably my favorite, was the room with the dinosaur fossils, which i ended up buying a souvenir from! Dinosaurs are something that we usually just hear about in movies, television, or through random conversation, but actually being face-to-face with something so inexplicably big makes you think. Talking about big animals, the famous blue whale model hanging in the ocean hall of the museum was so huge that it dragged any attention of the room towards itself. My friends and i split up in this room, quietly taking pictures and admiring certain parts of the exhibit on our own. We also paid for the mummy exhibit, which my friends made me rush through so the most i got out of my money for the special mummy exhibit was a few captions and sight of some clay pots. Towards the end of our touristy antics, we were in in the exhibit with North American animals. This part of the museum was breathtaking. It was while the museum was about to close, since they close so early, so we we were basically in the exhibit by ourselves with the exception of a couple photographers. It was super quiet, and we enjoyed every minute of it up until the automated message on the museum loud speaker told us it was time to leave. All in all i hope to go back, because spending under three hours in such a large museum is wasteful.
DREAM Scholar Meet and Greet
Here in this meet and greet, I was able to learn more about my scholarship and meet new people. Some snacks were available at the end but I was much more concerned about the situation we were facing in our community. As most of you may know, President Trump has ended DACA, which stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, and with this no longer available to us, it makes things much harder to do. Simple things, like getting a job or continuing our education, are no longer so attainable for us which is why this deferred action means so much to us. During this meeting we were given some information about what we could do to extend our deadlines, and we were shown much support from the rest of the staff there. The presentation itself was very informing and I even got to learn some things about my scholarship that I have previously not known about. I was also lucky enough to meet other Dreamers and know that I am not alone in this situation. I hope I can create a lasting bond with these people and show them my gratitude for what they have done for us, and I will be looking forward to participating in more events concerned around this matter.
