Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DWB

Student Life

Hi, my name is Riley McPhee and for for my assignment I decided to go to a new club for Student Life.  I chose to attend the general interest meeting for UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Fund) at Baruch.  This club’s main purpose is fundraising for UNICEF through various events and projects throughout the year.  At this club I learned a lot about how I can get involved at Baruch.  Here at the college, there are many ways to get involved but I was especially interested in this specific club since focuses on volunteer work and working to help others.  It does take a semester to be able to join as an official member by completing a list of tasks, but I was glad to find out that a person can still participate in the club before they are inducted.  There are 2 committees and many leaders so there are often leading positions opening as well such as president of marketing, treasurer, etc.

The club officers were very welcoming and informative about the motives of the club, how to join, and what their events were year to year. There are a lot of planned fundraisers, events, and collaborations with different clubs. They presented a power point that explained their club very clearly and planned ice breakers to have everyone get to know each other.  We had to find 3 things in common with every single person in the group.  Each group had about 6 people, so it was a difficult task, but a good way to get to know the people in your group.  I had a lot of fun with all the people in my group for ice breakers and joining this club is a good way to make friends.  The officers made the environment extremely welcoming and I learned a lot about how involved a student can get at Baruch.

My name is Kevin, and last week I attended the Latinx jeopardy game show and I participated for team Ecuador. It was located in the first floor where other Hispanic clubs and non Hispanic clubs joined and participated. I found it funny that their was a Ecuadorian club because I’m Ecuadorian and I’ve never seen so many ecuadorians around my age. It was cool that I got to play latin jeopardy with the ecuadorian squad. Some of the questions were hilarious, one of them was about types of ways Hispanic parents disciplined you and everyone kind of related to it and had the same answers like with their hands, the chancla, the hanger, the belt, and the broom. It was also cool to see that pretty much everyone there listened to reggaeton and had the same favorite artist. I also got to eat pizza and talk to people around me. But after taking a break my team lost, but the game was fun and exciting. After we lost in Latin jeopardy I got to talk with some of the club members and they told be about joining the club. I never really thought about joining the ecuadorian club because I had my eyes set on LASO, because I was in it during high school and it was lit. But now I’m thinking about joining them both because the Ecuadorian club will teach me about my roots and culture. I also feel that the club would perfect be spanish because I understand and speak it but I can’t understand some Dominicans (they speak way to fast lol) like my barber and the guy at the bodega. I also want to bring a more younger Hispanic tradition to their club. This coming Thursday I will be attending the ecuadorian club and work on getting a high position in the club.

Student Life

Hi, my name is Jordan Yee and I was really looking forwards to joining clubs like I had in high school.  So in the little time that I have spent at Baruch so far, I am LOVING it here.  That isn’t even a overstatement because it is so similar to high school, but so different at the same time.  I recently went to 2 different club meetings: Vietnamese Student Association and Absolute Adrenaline.  Although I did enjoy myself more at the Vietnamese Student Association club, Absolute Adrenaline wasn’t boring either.  Both of these clubs had more than a couple people and were providing free food for the people that attended their meeting.

At the Vietnamese Student Association we were encouraged to socialize with others around us.  Some of the people there were existing members while some were incoming freshman, creating a diverse body of people to interact with. In addition to the age and year of the students at the club meeting, there were people of many different races and cultures, not only Vietnamese people, as one might assume from the name of the club.  We did a multitude of things inside the meeting room like prepare our own summer rolls after watching a tutorial and even learn several Vietnamese phrases to compete against other groups.  (This may sound familiar because I went with a couple friends from my block: Ben and Darren)

The best selfie that has ever been taken with the President of the Vietnamese Student Association Club!

I haven’t really tried too hard to actively look for clubs that I can join but I really do want to be a part of not just one or two clubs.  Joining more and more clubs helps me to expand my social circle and practice my social skills with students from different places and very different lives.  I actually considered making my own club with Ben and can imagine running my very own club, bringing a diverse body of students together.

The event we had for the clubs was a great way of getting freshman involved with the school. The people that were representing the clubs were full of energy and really got me interested in many clubs. I think that Baruch did a great job at this event for making the school better for freshman. There were tables with a bunch of different clubs. There were many different religious clubs and cultural clubs. There was a club for everyone. No matter what interests you had, you can find a club for it.

Out of all the many clubs, I chose to visit undergraduate student government because I was very interested in it. I always wanted to be part of student government in high school but I never got the chance. This would be a perfect choice for me because I would really want to represent the school. I plan on getting involved because I believe that in can help me later in life throughout my career. Being part of student government involves a lot of public speaking and that is a very good thing to have as you get older. I plan on being active in the club and even run for a position later. I think being part of student government will be a very good choice because it will change my experience in college. I will learn many new things and make many new friends by joining.

Overall I think that going to this event can be very helpful and make you new connections in life. By getting involved in the clubs and events you can make new friends. Even though Baruch is a commuter school there are still many events that the school has. By joining a club you get the full experience of going to college even if you commute.

Hey all, Evan here. Went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art this past weekend to see an exhibit on WWI. A lot of the time in history classes, WWII is the more frequent topic of conversation, so it was interesting to see a perspective on “the War to end all Wars”. Behind me is one of the gas masks used in the trenches by soldiers, but artistic depictions of soldiers marching to war, skeletons in No Man’s Land, and plenty of other haunting works.

Seeing different artists express their thoughts about the war from the perspective of their different nationalities reminded me that there’s always more than one way of looking at an event, even some that may seem simple to others.

FRO Blog Post #1

Today I went to the Museum of Modern Art, or MoMA, to look at some of the pieces being exhibited. I didn’t have any idea what was on display. I walked around the block beforehand, but didn’t see any posters or advertisements beckoning passersby inside like there are with other museums. That might’ve been due to the ongoing construction/renovation on part of the building though. After getting a ticket and a quick bag check, I took the escalators to the highest floor I had access to (higher floors seemed to have been roped off in preparation for an upcoming exhibit) and stepped into the nearest gallery. From behind a wall I could see a crowd of people gathered around something, more than around any of the surrounding pieces. Their reasoning became clearer once I turned the corner. Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” alone on the wall with spectators forming almost a semi-circle around it. I snapped a quick photo to commemorate the surprise encounter. Other things that stood out were the scale of some of the artwork and how much noise there was. From needing multiple walls to display one piece, devoting a whole area to a bubbling rectangular (or square) vat of grey liquid that echoed and splattered, or just a projection on the floor. There were even interactive sections where visitors could draw both traditionally and digitally or build and design architectural features. Encouraging active participation instead of solely showcasing works definitely wasn’t expected. Overall the experience served as a cool visual reminder to get lost instead of pushing to find something.

Student Life

Hi everyone! My name is Lauren, and I am a Freshman. I was curious to learn what Student Life had to offer here at Baruch, so a friend had introduced me to the club, Women in Business, also known as WIB. I was interested to attend WIB’s general interest meeting because I plan to major within a field of business, however, I am not sure what my concentration is yet.

When I first entered the club meeting, there were a lot of people seated and they provided pizza, cookies, and drinks for students. Soon after, the President and Vice Presidents of the club introduced themselves and explained what the club is about. As they were explaining the club’s responsibilities, it seemed organized and professional since there were many committees such as marketing, event planning, journalism, etc. This way, there were many positions for students and it allowed them to choose what committee they prefered to participate in. The club members also met and worked with professionals outside of Baruch which made the club such a huge success.

After that, we had a fun ice breaker in order to get to know about one another. We formed a circle and had to pass a little box around as they played the music. Once the music stopped, we had to say our names and why we were interested in the club.

I was pleased to attend this meeting because everyone was welcoming and friendly. It also made me feel more comfortable at Baruch since I became more familiar with new faces. Not only did I expand my horizons as a student and expose myself to activities beyond the classroom, but I had the opportunity to ask questions and socialize with other students. I definitely enjoyed my time at the Women in Business general interest meeting.

Hi, I attended the resume building workshop that was held by the business fraternity ( Delta Sigma Pi). When I entered the room I was immediately greeted and welcomed, by the brothers and sisters of the fraternity they were all really outgoing and caring. I was originally going to attend the IMG General interest meeting but due to the packed room I wasn’t able to attend that meeting. During the resume building workshop we learned about the power of the resume and how a resume actually should function. My resume was far below standards but members of the club openly gave me constructive criticism and I was able to come out with a new product. This experience sort of “opened up” my eyes to the possible help and opportunity that can come with joining a fraternity. This workshop also helped me meet older mentors that could help me with my future. These are people already working in the firms that one day I hope to be apart of.

Ayesha’s 1st Post

Hi everyone, I’m Ayesha, and a freshman here at Baruch (like most of you). One of the first things I did here to explore student life at Baruch was go to the general interest meeting for Women in Business, or WIB. (You have to say the letters, not shorten it to ‘wib’ which rhymes with ‘bib.’ They were very clear about that).

I first heard about the club on convocation day, and was interested in it because I want to go into the business field when I get older (again, like most people here at Baruch).

At the meeting I learned about the core foundations of the organization, which include mentorship, meritocracy, and mobility. Women in Business focuses on enabling women to be successful in future careers in business by providing experience, tools, connections, etc. to help us succeed.

Everyone seemed to be really friendly, and I saw that the club is actually huge. There were a bunch of different committees which each focused on a specific designation of the club. For example, there was a committee for corporate relations and another one for marketing. They encouraged us to apply to whichever committees interested us the most, although no more than three. They even had some ice-breakers to get us all to talk to one another, and well, break the ice. Everyone hates them, but sometimes they’re fun.

As informational as the meeting was, there was also food, which I know is one of the biggest draws for college students, including myself. We indulged on pizza and had the opportunity to mingle and make some friends. It really felt like a community I might grow to love and learn from. Overall the meeting was very interesting and I’m glad I attended.

Student Life

Student life is a big part of life at college. It is very important to join clubs, attend events and just have fun! You can meet some cool people that have similar interests, try new things, gain valuable experience and get free food because who doesn’t like free food? During the club hours me and my friends Jordan and Darren went to a VSA general interest meeting. Everyone in the club is very friendly and welcoming. The members of the club introduced themselves then told us about the club and upcoming events. After that we learned how to make summer rolls. My roll didn’t come out so good but it tasted good and was fun to make. After making the summer rolls we learned some Vietnamese phrases and vocabulary. We played a game that tested what we just learned but unfortunately didn’t win. After the VSA meeting we went to the Absolute Adrenaline club meeting. At this meeting they had even more free food. I ate some good lasagna and caesar salad. In this club they do things like paintballing, rock climbing and other outdoor activities. Absolute Adrenaline is going to be a lot of fun. When this meeting was over we hung out on the second floor and listened to some good music from the Baruch radio station before making our way to our next class.

Baruch has a lot to offer with their many clubs. I look forward to joining a lot more clubs that be useful to my international business major. I really look forward to joining a business fraternity and other business clubs like Marketers of Baruch, Traders at Baruch and the Investment Management Group. The club hours at Baruch are a lot of fun and everyone is super friendly and welcoming. I can’t wait til next week so I can join more clubs, meet some more people and eat more free food!
