:D
My friends (in grey) and I with President Lewis (in red) and Vice President Zoe (in blue) of UCLA!

Hellloo, I’m Karis (pronounced “kuh-reese”), fresh out of Baruch High School, literally two blocks away from Baruch College. Fun Fact: I’ve been in this area for the past 4 years and I still can’t recommend people good places to eat for lunch. 😀

Coming into college, I was afraid. I will be honest, I was scared and anxious. I was alone and I had no idea what was coming for me. To force myself to interact with people and to try to adjust to college, I told myself to attend at least two club events/general interest meetings. So, I gathered my friends and got them to join me at UCLA’s (United Chinese Language Association) first general interest meeting. I was told that it is one of the largest clubs in school and they were not kidding. It felt like all the asians of Baruch College were gathered in the tiny classroom.

They started off by introducing each of the e-board members and I noticed how close the team was. Seeing that made me want to be a part of something like that in the future. They moved onto little ice-breaker type games, calling up volunteers to play games like the Whisper Challenge and Pictionary. The Whisper Challenge pretty much made the rest of my week because there was this one guy that didn’t understand how the game worked so he just messed everything up and everyone had a good laugh because of it.

The club meeting made me really happy and excited for the rest of my time in college. It lifted a huge weight off my shoulders and made me feel at ease because I think I found something I want to be a part of. All in all, I cannot wait to slowly discover the many things Baruch has to offer.

Sarah Mohamad Blog #1

Hi everyone, pretty sure you all know me because we are all in the same FRO, but if you don’t, I’m Sarah and I am a biology/natural science major. I always help those in need, human or animal, and I think it is very important to help those who need it the most. Putting a smile on someone’s face or keeping them warm by donating one of your sweaters to a clothes drive is such a vibrant feeling that everyone should experience at least once. I always donate to charity organizations and I am a member of ASPCA. I always participate in protests and pledges for animals, but I have never joined an organization that helps children and families. When I found out there was a UNICEF club/organization at Baruch, I signed up right away. I got an email about their first general interest meeting and I RSVP’d.

I attended the meeting and it was cool. They explained that they like to help as much as they can, as well as I. They organize events, charities, and they also do partnerships/sponsorships to help raise money. I signed up to join the club and I honestly do not know how this whole thing works. I have no idea if I need to be accepted in or me attending the meetings and being active in the club means I’m in, I don’t know. But I am going to be active and participate in UNICEF and see where that takes me. I am very excited to see what will happen in the future and allowing this club to help me do the charity I’ve always wanted to do!

I’ve spent the majority of my high school career being part of philanthropic organizations and it’s something I truly enjoy because of all the different people and perspectives I come across. Partaking in philanthropic clubs taught me so much about the world we live in and about myself, so I chose to attend UNICEF’s general interest meeting to find out exactly what is it they do. It turned out to be really inspiring and fun.

The meeting opened up by them introducing themselves followed by pizza and soda. After we were done eating they showed us an emotional but powerful video that depicted the struggles of children all over the world. It was honestly very sad because it resonated with me, after the video finished they went onto explain all of the fundraising events they hold to raise awareness for the disadvantaged children across the globe. To name a few fundraising events: Trick or Treat for Unicef, International Food Fair, Snowflake Ball, etc. They then proceeded onto an icebreaker in which we had to break up into groups and come up with three things we all had in common. My group didn’t win but it was still fun because the group that did was so specific on what they had in common that everyone laughed when they said it out loud.

I had the opportunity to meet international students during this meeting and talk with some of the board members which was exciting. I had a great time at the meeting and I do see myself becoming a member of UNICEF at Baruch because of the message they want to spread across the school. I want my college experience at Baruch to be one where I am actively involved in clubs that want to make a difference in peoples lives; UNICEF at Baruch.

Me and the Accounting Society President Sandy

Hey, my name is Vincent. I want to major in accounting, so I thought I’d go to the Accounting Society general interest meeting. It was actually very interesting to find out what they do. They first started the meeting by giving everyone food, pizza and cookies, and then by doing an icebreaker. The icebreaker was the zoomed in photo challenge so we had to get in groups and guess what the pictures were. It was actually a lot of fun.
After the icebreaker, the people on the board of the Accounting Society told us what the club is about and what they do for students to get them involved in the accounting world. First of all, they hold workshops to help students with the interview process, and the workshop even includes a mock interview so a student can see what they must improve on in an interview. They even hold workshops to tell students what they should be doing each year and what classes to take in order to get an internship and then eventually become an accountant. Also, they hold many fairs and meetings with accounting firms that allow students to talk to many recruiters about themselves, which they said usually leads to interviews. They hold so many events to help people that I can’t even remember all of them.
I think joining this club will provide me with the right tools in order to pursue a career in accounting. Also, being a freshmen and coming to a new school with not that many friends, this club will allow me to meet new people that share the same interests as me. There were so many people at the general interest meeting that I’m bound to have some things in common with a couple of people there besides accounting. This club offers a lot of support in helping students achieve their dream of entering the accounting world. I think this club will benefit me in the long run and help me reach my goals.

Student Life

Hello, my name is Darren and this is my first blog post. I remember my first week in New York alone after my parents left me. I had gotten a job at Shake Shack by that point, but I still knew absolutely nobody other than my older cousin. I was sitting at home playing on my computer and contacting my friends in Alabama whenever I was not at work for the first week and a half. My cousin then introduced me to one of her Baruch friends, Mina, which only made me more excited to start school. I remember at the convocation I met Kaylee. Then I met Ben and Jordan. Before long Mina had me in the club room and I met more and more people. I am honestly so surprised on how many people I have met. Coming from a week of being alone to having group chats for basketball, I’m enjoying the city life compared to little town Alabama. With the diversity here compared to Alabama, several of my views on life are changing. Never have I ever been able to interact with this many Asians. (except in Chinatown) Joining VSA has allowed me to befriend and lear

n about so many other different Asian cultures. The VSA club also gives me a great place to store my things, hangout, and meet other people in other clubs. I am really loving Baruch in every aspect except the distance of which I have to commute. (If only the MTA was reliable) And the classes, for right now, have been really easy on the work given and taught. It may sound terrible, but I honestly cant wait for final weeks where everyone will be in study groups. That is a part of the college experience I am really looking forward to.

As the stress of the new school year and new environment takes its toll, there is some relief within student clubs. I find myself overwhelmed with the amount of opportunities that are in front of me as I walk around the second floor of the Newman Vertical Campus everyday. The various tables set up are filled with delicious food and energetic members to get people to check out their club. Since I feel insanely out of place coming from a Jewish community with barely any interaction with the outside world, I find relief at the Hillel table. Hillel at Baruch is part of a larger foundation for Jewish life on campus. At Hillel, one could enjoy the many Jewish learning opportunities as well as Israel advocation that they have during club hour and after school hours. As I lingered around the table, I was greeted by a warm smile from one of the associates at the table. As I made my way over, she made me feel welcomed by pulling up a seat and invited me to sit next to her and explain

Natasha and me at the Hillel table!

what Hillel has to offer a stressed out freshman who feels like a fish out of water. She told me about their current efforts to help with relief from Hurricane Harvey in Houston. I was impressed by the amount of students who opened their wallets and donated to the cause. Shortly after I gave her my contact information I received a text from her about a performance from an Israeli musician who had come to Baruch! I am glad there is an organization at Baruch where i can feel a bit more at home and hopefully this will fuel me to branch out and join more clubs in the future!
