Freshman Seminar Fall 17 EWA

Focus 2

I decided to take the Focus 2 work interest assessment because I am not sure about which career path to choose for myself.  The system itself assesses the best major and career for an individual from his or her interests, values, skills and personality. It has a bunch of tests with very short and precise questions and it takes less than 5 mins to complete each test. After taking the test, focus 2 displayed a chart of prospective careers that are suitable for me. But keep in mind that the test is very short so the result might not be accurate for you. My results showed that I am suitable for the artistic category which I kind of agree with.  I enjoy photography, designing, painting, and creating short films but at the same time I lack creativity. Eventually, working in an artistic field becomes a great struggle for me. I will keep the results of this test in mind but I am not sure if I will end up in any sort of art field.

Majors and Minors Fair

This past Thursday, I attended the Majors and Minors Fair.  There I had the opportunity to meet people who specialize in the major I am currently interested in, International Business, and was able to ask them as many questions as I could think of about my major.  They were awesome with giving me info about the different job opportunities I can achieve, and also pointed me in the right direction when discussing how to choose my minor. They also told me how to make an appointment with the Starr Career Development Center when I have more questions or if I need assistance in finding internships or jobs.  Overall I had a great time at the Majors and Minors Fair because it made me less stressed about my future after seeing how helpful the Baruch staff is, and I also got a better understanding of my major.

My Internship at Coca Cola

Last month, Ken and I took part in a Coca-Cola Recruitment Drive. This was especially an eye-opening experience because I was unaware of how important it is to make connections. Through this internship, I really learned the importance of the professional setting. Say goodbye to your baseball cap or your NBA jersey because it’s all suits and ties if you want to make it in the Professional environment.

Though I highly doubt we got the internship, it was nonetheless well worth our time because at the end of the day, physically being there and experiencing it first hand is a lot more useful than just reading about it in some article.

Coca Cola Recruitment Drive

Jackie and I went to a Coca Cola Recruitment Drive for prospective interns recently. We wanted to experience an internship in our freshmen-sophomore year so that we could be prepared for our future.

Our very first inclination that we were entering a whole new world was the doorman dressed in a really nice suit and the secretaries all in professional clothing. While the majority of it might not sound much, the atmosphere also gave us some added pressure. The calm and collected composure of the staff alongside their professionalism was quite intriguing, it made us realize that the business world isn’t as calm as we would’ve thought.

What we did at the office was to learn about the various jobs that Coca Cola emphasize and focuses on, and what we as prospective interns would have to know to obtain the job. While we most likely wouldn’t receive the internship, it still was a fun time for one of our exposures to the FIRE sector.

Starr Career let’s get started workshop

The Starr Career workshop was extremely helpful in my opinion, they helped me choose what careers will be right for me according to my personality and personal interest/hobby. Initially, I was interested in accountancy, then the representatives educated me in the responsibility of being an accountant. I then lost interest in being accountant and switched my intended major to finance. They also gave me tons of extremely useful resources such as Focus 2 and other online resources and program opportunities such as pre-law.

TEAM BARUCH MEETING

I went to the Team Baruch meeting 2 weeks ago. I went because I heard a lot about Team Baruch in my Fro class so I decided to check it out and see if I was interested in applying right now. The meeting was very interesting and a lot of people attended. I thought it was overall a very good opportunity but with the job I have right now and my work load I just knew it wasn’t for me currently. I would consider applying at a later time because it does seem like something I would want to do in the future.

Galleries in Chelsea

My friend Michelle and I visited multiple galleries in Chelsea since we’ve already been to many museums. I highly recommend everyone to walk around Chelsea and explore the many galleries and art exhibits you will find there. There are not as crowded and you will find different aspects of art you will never find at places like MoMA or the MET. I saw a room with walls completely covered with floral dresses, flowers decorated the countless dressers and chairs, and just the fact that this room was practically filled with different items was amazing. Although I don’t like modern art (since most of the time it could be a black canvas with a red dot or a crumpled up piece of metal), I enjoyed visiting these galleries and I expect to go back very soon!

TEAM BARUCH MEETING

Walking into the TEAM Baruch meeting, I didn’t think I would have the time or be the one to stand in front of a class and attempt to mentor them to have a better experience. While listening to two members of TEAM Baruch speak of their experience and time, they deemed it as an experience worthwhile that doesn’t take as much time out of your week as you may think. I was intrigued enough to apply to TEAM Baruch and am now awaiting an upcoming interview, and see myself being a peer mentor, much like my own peer mentor Myrah who actually seems to care for my Block and wants us to genuinely enjoy our time in college. Not only will it hopefully be an addition to my resume, but it will also help me grow as a leader and a person, while helping others.

STARR’s Start Up Event

I attended the STARR career event about getting jobs at start up companies. At the event I learned how to potentially get a job at a start up. I learned about the potential benefits of working for start ups and about the expected work load of working at a start up. The most beneficial part of the event was hearing the stories of the two presenters that told about their experiences in a fully developed company and working at start ups. By hearing about start ups and their experiences I learned that start up work isn’t for me, as interesting as it sound its not something I would want to be doing after I get my degree. Also I couldn’t take a picture of myself since I went alone and i selfie seemed to disrespectful.

Understanding art

Usually museums aren’t my thing because I’ve a hard time understanding art pieces. However, I am currently enrolled in Art History class which means that I have to look at artworks a a lot. My art history professor thoroughly explains the culture and the time period of the art works he uses for his class. After being in the class, I was eager to learn even more about the art from the past and what they actually depict. I’ve finally found a reason to go to museums and thoroughly analyze the details of sculptures and paintings. This specific sculpture caught my attention because it has no arms and has three heads. I want to be able to understand why it was made such way. Hopefully my professor can tell me more about it.
