On Friday the 10th of February, I attended the Spring Career Fair. It was a grand, formal event with many business owners and their stands. At first I was a little intimidated because as a Freshman I assumed that people wouldn’t be interested in talking to me, so I’d be wasting their time. Then, when I spoke to my first stand – Publicis Media – I noticed that the presenters were very welcoming and even though they didn’t offer current jobs for Freshman, they were quite encouraging. Of course the free stuff were cool and helped drag people’s attention! But the presenters themselves were also always smiling and kind, so the ice in me melted very quickly. The event suddenly became comfortable and fun.
It was also informing; I spoke to several recruiters who told me I could apply for certain internships which may be interested in Freshman. So there actually were tons of opportunities for me and my peers, even for the international students. However, I couldn’t find many opportunities, focused on my intended major, which is Psychology. Although, there were several health-related stands, so I wasn’t completely hopeless.
Overall, I felt like I took my first step towards finding a job, by familiarizing myself with the environment. I noticed that it might not be that hard to find a potential job in Baruch since it is a very business oriented school and they constantly hold such events for students. Now I feel more confident with joining career events and presenting myself to potential recruiters. Perhaps next year and the following years after that, I actually will find myself a good job with future prospects in my field. But for the time being, I’m going to adapt more and keep my options open till I have more experience with the college life. However, I feel like it’s definitely possible for freshman to find job opportunities, in fact I, myself might even apply to be a camp leader during this summer!
