One type of freedom discussed in Foner’s book was political freedom. People wanted the right to vote. In particular, slaves. Many slave felt that they were not free until they had the right to vote. Former slaves really felt they needed the right to vote, because America was built around democracy. They needed this freedom to be considered equal.
Freedom was not really realized in the short term. Although, slavery was abolished and former slave had the right to vote, there was still segregation. Many people did not accept the concept of colored people having rights and gaining freedom.
In the long term, this freedom is definitely recognized. I can see that through modern day society. We are all treated as equals, and everyone recognizes that we all have the same rights as each other. Everyone votes, because everyone has the right to vote, and colored people are not given a hard time about it.
