The Propaganda War

During World War I the  U.S. government created the Committee on Public Information(CPI). It was created to increase support for the war. This was the first time that the government had made a conscious effort to change the public’s opinion. I thought that Foner’s coverage of the topic was pretty thorough. What I felt would have made his coverage more complete would have been to include all the different types and techniques of propaganda that were used. Also to described the psychological aspect of how propaganda manipulates the minds of citizens.

Two questions I was left wondering about were:

1. How honest was the CPI?

2.How did the CPI attempt to reach pacifists?
