The 1920’s was a prosperous time for America, it flourished with new technology. New inventions lead to social changes within society. One group in society that completely changed was women. The 1920s was a time for women to let loose. Women no longer covered every inch of their body, they started to go against the norms. Flappers was term given to these new breed of women. A flapper was seen with short hair, short skirts, and usually a cigarette in hand. The flapper was known as a sexually free woman who also drank and smoke, ignoring all types of judging. Of course, this became a trend, and it wasn’t so rare to  see a woman walking down a street with a bottle and cigarette in her hand.

Housekeeping and raising a family were considered ideal female roles during the 1950s, although that standard was less rigid than in previous decades. With marriage and birthrates booming, women were becoming wives and mothers by the minute. Society placed high importance and many expectations on behavior at home as well as in public. Women were supposed to fulfill certain roles, such as a caring mother, a diligent homemaker, and an obedient wife. The perfect mother was supposed to stay home and nurture so society would accept them. A diligent housewife had dinner on the table precisely at the moment her husband arrived from work. A wife was a “good” wife only if she carried out her man’s every order and agreed with him on everything. In fact, even if she wanted to voice an opinion, he education, or rather lack of thereof would not allow it.

Women today have the freedom to be anything they want to be. It was hard to find a picture of modern day women because their is no ideal look for them. Women are mothers, company owners, wives, and doctors, etc. The role of women have dramatically changed since the flapper age. It went from a bad girl to a housewife, and every woman was almost like that. Now a day in society, women have choices and equality among men. We no longer have to sit around at home waiting for men, it is even common now that men can be the housewives.
