For this photo essay, I have chosen to capture a day in the life of an international student from Hong Kong. Tony Sze is a baruch student who is trying to adapt to the crowded environments of Chinatown NY. Despite being from a different country, Tony spends his days like any other student, such as browsing facebook, doing homework, and reading books. He also maintains part of his cultural heritage and habits from Hong Kong by eating the same food, keeping up with the news on facebook, as well as curling the book in a very unique way. Even though this is a huge transition in life for Tony, he is still able to pursue his passions in drumming. Despite lacking a drum set at the moment, Tony still tries to practice drumming at home with a fake small drum. Almost all of his drumming sticks show signs of intense usage and wear. For Tony the word “limitation” means nothing. Like he said once, “Drums are my life, they are my way of escaping reality”.
I really liked your photo essay. You had a lot of variety and you did a good job at showing Tony’s life. You were able to show that although he is an international student, he’s just like any other college student. Those intimate moments of him looking at his phone and browsing Facebook made your photo essay more relatable. Good job!
