- Through the use of music and approach of using an audience, director Lauren Greenfield worked with the company “Always” to spread the general message of how common it is to degrade females.
- Both “Why I Want a Wife” by Judy Syfers and the “Always #LikeAGirl” video portray the same message through different means. Syfers writes about how women are expected to be almost like property or servants, available for any task at any time. The video uses a group of people to portray how the phrase “like a girl” is degrading. Even though they were written during different times, both pieces illustrate how females are still considered lower in society compared to males.
Thesis for the analysis of “The School Days of an Indian Girl” and “All Falls Down”
The novel “The School Days of an Indian Girl” written by Zitkala-Sa and Kanye West’s song “All Falls Down” both delve into the idea of a minority individual being strongly influenced by societal factors.
Thesis
Compared to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I’ve been to the Mountaintop”, “I am Vertical” by Sylvia Plath, considering both of their similar recent encounters with death, seems like a more nihilistic and depressing view of the struggle of life.
David Thesis
LeBron James vertical leap and Sylvia Plath’s, “I am vertical” have a critical similarity. Both have a unique crave about being high up or down below. Plath and LBJ are similar in that, they both have a certain destination as to where they want to be. Plath wants to be lying down on the floor, looking up and LBJ wants to be high up, looking down below. This in turn, creates a distinct commonness about each other that needs to be addressed. With his vertical leap reportedly measuring in at somewhere north of 40 inches (the NBA average is in the high 20s), King James is able to launch his 6-foot-8-inch, 250-pound frame with seeming ease. Invisible Man
Invisible Man, written by Ralph Ellison, is a very interesting story. In the reading we were given, there seemed to be a lot going on with the narrator. Not knowing information at all and jumping into the last five pages, there were some things that were very clear and some that were confusing. It was very clear that the narrator was trying to escape something or someone and his name was not known What was very interesting was the narrator’s attachment to his briefcase and what he did with the papers inside of it. Before the narrator jumped into the black hole, he was very hesitant of giving anyone his briefcase, but when he was inside, he burned it to make light.
What it seems like Ellison is trying to show the reader through the narrator’s actions is the struggles African Americans had during this time period. In this time period, African Americans were segregated from whites and were not seen as equals. Throughout this time, African Americans were not really seen as humans and did not get any respect. The narrator of the story was only mentioned as “he” or “the black man”. This represents the racism that was going on during this time. In addition, Ellison is trying to show the narrators wanting to forget his past life and wants to live without segregation.
Thesis
Although Martin Luther King Jr.’s foreshadowing in “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” was effective, Martin Luther King Jr.’s allusions were what made the speech powerful in displaying his feelings about the inequality African Americans face in his speech.
Thesis- Volinsky and Holmes
Both “The Vertical: The Fundamental Principle of Classic Dance” by A.K Volinsky and “The Physiology of Walking” by Wendell Holmes revolve around the concept of verticality and how walking upright is a step towards progress in humans, but the way in which they approach this issue is profoundly different. Each essay leaves a very different impact on the reader: the former leaves us with a notion of superiority while the latter leaves us in awe.
William Pope Crawl and Dudley Williams
At first after I watched both videos I was confused as to how it related to the topics we were learning. William Pope created a movement in which he crawled across the streets. One thing that struck William Pope, was when someone asked him why he was wearing a suit, despite his color, and why the person filming him was caucasian. William Pope’s crawling is meant make a statement about homelessness. He decided to start this, because he had family member who were living on the streets.
Both Dudley Williams videos are of an African American male dancing to “I Wanna Be Ready” by Alvin Alley. In my opinion, this video ties in with the vertical movement we have been studying all semester. Every time the song referenced death at all, the dancer was always closer to the floor than at the other parts of the song. The ground here might symbolize death and “putting on the long white robe” that relates to dying. He is trying to rid himself of all of his sins, and start over by becoming pure again.
