What is Graphic Design? -Susan Chen

At first I first perceived graphic design as the mere act of creating content but after reading this article, I now believe graphic design is more than typing letters on a page. It’s an interactive experiment, full of changes, rejections and precision to detail. It came to me as a surprise the fact that typography has been around for centuries ever since the development of language, as an outlet for distributing information. I never realized how old it was until it sunk in. Found on product packaging, posters, magazines, newspapers, webpages and much more, graphic design is inescapable in the world we live in, which gives me comfort to know that there will be some sort of opportunity out there for me as I declare this as my major. What stuck out to me was how relevant graphic design and typography affects the behavior of consumers. We live in a technologically advanced generation that relies heavily on quality of display and dramatic visualizations. Signage, logos, advertisements, packaging and webpage layout and color scheme can gravitate viewers and grab their attentions, whether it is just to send out a message or to convince them to purchase a product/service.

If I had one question to ask the author it would be, does graphic designs all have to be purely digital? I preferably enjoy hand drawn, hand crafted projects over adjusting images through a computer mouse digitally. I don’t know if it is just me but the fact that my ideas flow out of my brain, down into my hand then straight into a pencil gives me great satisfaction. Let me elaborate. Back in high school, I was in Architecture, technical drawing to be exact, and I hand drew the houses, floor plans and the New York skyline with just a wooden board, white paper, a t-square and a couple of pencils and rulers. Physically drawing with a pencil seems to now be a lost art form as we transition to the digital age, which is one of my biggest fear: something that I love so much has become outdated and obsolete.

What is Graphic Design?

After reading the article, I learned that graphic design is not only the art but also the process of visual communication. Graphic design has been used almost everywhere nowadays, from subway to school, from magazines to websites…It can be experienced instantly, over time, or minute to minute (which is also called interactive design).  That means, graphic design does not have just one category but many. And because of that, designers are not just “graphic designers” generally but depending on the field they specially work in and the level of their careers, they can also be UI/UX, web designer, production artist, experience designer, or copywriters…Moreover, since we live in the world of advanced technologies, some of these titles may change or there may even new titles in accordance with the changes of their fields.

My biggest question for the author is that is it good to be best at both graphic design and interactive design if I want to be an UI/UX designer? I know that they have different goals, one is more about visual and textual communications while the latter is more about the interaction between users and the sites/apps. Some graphic designers know a little bit about interactive design and vice versa.

What is Graphic Design? – Laura Martinez

The article made me think of all of the types of work that falls under graphics design. As well as all the type of job opportunities available in the industry in all of its levels. It helped me understand more of the differences and option that graphic design and its designers have. There is so much that can be dome as a designer that your path can go in so many different ways. Design is not just something that “looks pretty” it’s a way of communicating with an audience.

My question for the author is there any sort of style of design that will lead to more success than others? Design is an art form, and like all arts everyone has their different style and mode of creation. I would want to know if there are certain rules and style that would lead that designer to become more successful and have better communication with its audience. I don’t really know the answer for this, I mean I bet there has to be something that all successful designers do, but is it enough things that could be said that they are the key to be a successful designer? I truly don’t know, or is design up to the eye of the beholder and has no special style or rules that will lead to truly great designs.

When I read the article, I got the idea that graphic design is much more than making images. It doesn’t only include images but it also includes words or graphic forms. Graphic designers tend to communicate or deliver a message through their designs by type, form, image on flyers, brochures, advertisement, posters, logos, sign and much more.I also learned that there are different types of designs and they are software design, user interface design, user experience design and type design. There are also various types of jobs in this field such as junior designer who can rise to senior designer, then art director to creative director and depending on the company, the job titles may vary.

My question to the author is How does one find their first job in this field? I know finding a first job especially in the related field can be hard but it is possible. After reading the article, “How to find your first job” assured me that you should have a strong cover letter, resume and online portfolio of your work especially with a strong portfolio you will be able to reach where you want to go and climb up the ladder in the design industry and if you are specific about what you want then you will find yourself happily employed.

What is Graphic Design–Weikang Liang

The definition of graphic design is generally broad. According to the article, “What is Graphic Design,” it is a creation of art and the visualization of thoughts. Graphic design could include images, words, or graphic forms. I think the main  purpose of graphic design is communication. Graphic designers try to express their thinking by designing whatever can bring out the point, such as posters, advertisements, brands, signs, logos, or packages. We are surrounded by graphic design every day. After reading this article, I know more about graphic design which includes user interface design, user experience design, and even type design.  There are also many different types of design jobs in the field. It is not easy to succeed in this field because it is hard to express and be accepted by others.

My question is that how much are the junior designer averagely paid annually. I know it is hard to tell because it depends on what company they work for. But I believe there is a round amount, and I want to know how much it is. I did some research; it says that it is around $25,000 to $49,500.

“What is Graphic Design?” (Patricia Valguna)

It’s no mystery to a visual-oriented person such as I how a font of a print can change a reader’s perception to new information. Reading was once a favorite pastime of mine. It filled my empty hours, but as those hours waned and turned into schedules, I became more selective of which printed information to retain or discard. I soon realized that most of the ones I retained are either interesting in concept or in print. In other words, whichever print looks the most appealing would be imprinted in my memory. So I began to apply this philosophy in my studies; that I need to create the most idealistic handwriting that is most convenient to read and retain in memory. From then on, I’m more than willing to go over my notes for exams and an acquaintance from time to time would compliment on my penmanship. To me though, it just meant that the “style of my font” was effective to those who complimented me and for me to to be able to actually retain what I wrote. I’m just the same as any other person. I’m also a consumer.Graphic Design not only present ideas and attract readers but also imprint the information in their memories. It’s a design to communicate.

My only question to the author was that is it possible to become an art director with a Marketing background? Since there is no rigid structure on how to become an art director, there’s more flexibility in which background a candidate for the position can come from. At the same time, no structure meant that there’s ambiguity and uncertainty if there’s ever a chance of becoming one. Then would a Marketing major with a minor in Graphic Design have more chance of becoming an art director than others?

The article contributed to my understanding of visual communication and graphic design in two ways. The first way is that I thought that graphic design was only when you do cartoons. So after reading the article I found out that it is more than that. The article made me understand that there are many ways for you to do graphic design with it not having to do with cartoons. The article also helped me understand that everything someone does is a way of communication. Visual communication is one part of graphic design. Visual communication is used in different ways like word, drawing, a person’s body, and media.

One question I have is what made you want to go into graphic design as a profession? I pick to go into graphic design as a profession because when I was going to school I felt in love with art classes and I loved to draw. I started to think about how I can make something I love to do into a career. This also had to do with a person in my life that told me that I was a great artist. The person told that I should rely look into doing act. Last I feel that in act you can do whatever you want and be yourself. You can express how you feel in different ways. I love to draw and love to show people my work. Also love to help people to want to do the same thing.
