Final Reflection

My body of work from this semester definitely was an interesting bunch. One assignment i’d say stands out to me though, is the work we did for Wikipedia, it stands out because of the fact that it was actually something that was very strenuous at times and the site itself often gave me a headache from just looking at its complexity but i got adjusted somewhat and got things i needed to get done in regards to the site. I have definitely made a few realizations of myself as a writer and a big one is that I just don’t think i’m as much of one as i thought i would be or already was, i guess there was this invisible line i had to reach in the beginning of college to feel more like one but if i don’t feel comfortable in my writing now, will i ever? This class has definitely helped me in other subjects just from the insight alone, such as my political science class, every exam we must write an essay in the end and this class, for me personally, helped me with that area of expertise and the articulation and formulation and ways to site, etc, it has helped a lot with other subjects in general.

A piece of writing from Blogs@Baruch i’m proud of is the Ten Point Program. Even though it was a group sort of thing, i really like it because of the fact that for this project there were so many different ideas and proposals and it ranged from small to drastic changes and i found that enjoyable because it showed that even though a lot of people don’t usually speak a lot in the class, they have activist intention or at least showed that they can be for the people.

One piece of work that was particularly challenging for me was project 2, but the essay portion, i say it was challenging in the way of me just being able to allocate enough information to cover everything in the rubric while at the same time maintaining a well rounded thesis argument followed by coherent facts throughout the paper. I definitely gained some insane research ability from this though because that was one of the times i had to go up and down left and right under and over side to side for information on just ONE person, so i thank this piece of work for that because it for sure will be useful in the very near future.

7 Day Log

Day 1. : Created a wikipedia account but later found out my IP address got blocked out even while at home.

Day 2: Was able to play the Wiki Adventure game, only partly because the sections stopped working after the 2nd “adventure”, might be related to my IP being blocked since it asked me to edit my sandbox.

Day 3: Read over some of the gender bias talk page and applied some of the things I did in the Wiki Adventure, the part i got through at, least.

Day 4: I went on some articles and accessed the View History page and found a few cool things, one of them being the ‘page statistics’ area, it showed the articles first time being edited as well as the latest, the number of users that had edited it, specified what each edit was briefly etc., very useful.

Day 5: Compared a few pages, a few male athlete’s vs women athletes and also did the same but with more corporate jobs (men CEO’s vs women).

Day 6: Finally decided on my women in red, Alice Draper Carter, a civics worker during WWII who was also the head of the board of the Play Schools Association, which developed educational programs for handicapped children.

Day 7: Began research for my woman in red, there was hardly any as expected but even though it was expected, it still blows my mind how little I can find about someone that had some great societal contributions in their lifetime, especially during the second world war.

Project Proposal

I am working individually for this project. The project I am reimagining for new medium is project 1, the Black panther party project. The aspects of my work I plan on focusing on are descriptive analysis of the time period and how it relates to modern time. I will be using google slides for my project.

I anticipate the medium will change the message by giving visual representations and also just providing a simpler way to grasp the similarities/differences between the BPP and BLM now. The sourcing will go sort of just like me looking up images from trusted sites or going on journals such as NYT etc. and using images they may have used. I anticipate the challenges to be finding plentiful information about correct modern day correlations of the BPP, i plan to meet them with just working my way around the research. The primary choice for choosing this is because my original proposal which would have been the Women in Red project didn’t really have the potential for becoming a cohesive slideshow with abundant visuals etc, not compared to project 1, which is why i chose it.

Black Panthers Revisited | Op-Docs | The New York Times – Film Review

This film made me realize a few things. Firstly, law enforcement just had it out for the necks of the members of the Black Panther Party, they exaggerated the kind of threat they were, if any, to the nation, and physically and intimidatingly acted upon such things through violence and verbal aggressions such as degradation of race and role in society and/or the supposed threat they are by just existing. I also learned that within the time of the Panthers, police were basically their rival, they did things like stick their 12-gauge shotguns to the back go their heads while arresting them for the smallest misdemeanors, just for a reason to have a go at them and make their lives even more miserable on top of everything else.

Judas & The Black Messiah – Film Review

This film was an absolute masterpiece to me. I really enjoyed and appreciated the fact that they tried to portray the events of the Panther party accurately and even have the actors resemble their given roles of the Party members, whether it be through appearances or pure amazing acting skill, the filmmakers did an amazing job breaking down and mapping out how life was for the Panthers back then so us or any audience can really grasp how tragic and unfair their conditions were. I think a conclusion I can make about the Black Panther party, to help those that haven’t heard of them understand, is that they were a group of individuals that just wanted to have a fair chance at using their rights as everyone else, and specifically the right of freedom of speech, they wanted a voice. They wanted to be heard and they wanted their message of “Stop the prejudiced violence toward our people” to get through to the outside world and evidently through so much struggle, it was heard by many, and now, that includes you.

Should the United States Ban TikTok?

“What is your reaction to a potential ban of TikTok in the United States? Are lawmakers’ concerns about the app warranted, in your opinion? How do you think a ban might affect you?”

My reaction was to think to myself that it wouldn’t be the worst thing ever, if anything it’ll serve as good to the community deeming how much social media already impacts the lives of those that use it. I think lawmakers are warranted about their concerns, they’re just doing their jobs and ensuring the safety, data, and privacy of the users of TikTok. I think a ban might affect me in a good way for sure because I feel I waste too much time on it already. There are times that I would open up the app when I’m supposed to actually be working and being productive and hours would fly by while I’m on it and then I just end up not being as productive as I would hope.

“What concerns, if any, do you have about TikTok? Why do these things worry you?”

Well i think a privacy concern is always going to be present, with many apps i feel the same, that my privacy isn’t always really prioritized by the company as much as they say. Another concern is how much adult content is being literally broadcasted to kids under 18 without the guidelines doing anything of it until drastic measures are taken and many people have to report or something drastic just for them to do their job and keep their guidelines true. This concerns me because TikTok was meant to be a kids app, an app to watch funny videos or dance to songs, sort of like a more modern Musically, but its gotten to a point where there’s so much nonsense all over the app now that it makes you wonder if these kids are being swayed to do things they shouldn’t, or if they’re seeing things they shouldn’t be.

Class Introduction

Ray’s Question: “What are three things you like about yourself?”

1: I’m an understanding person

2: I find myself very funny

3: It’s not something you should like, but I like to disregard my personal problems to help the people i really care about sometimes. It actually does benefit me even if it may seem it doesn’t but i do enjoy being “that person” for someone to go to when they need advice or to just talk in general.

Summer’s Question: “If you could get away with it, what crime would you commit and why?”

— “I wouldn’t do any because it’s just the type of person i am, even if i could i just wouldn’t I don’t see the point in bringing myself those types of complications, even if yes, I can get away with it quote on quote.”
