Guadalupe Perez – Week 13

The article “Here’s what to know about the dangers that go along with Hosting Thanksgiving Amid Surging coronavirus infections: what’s safe? What’s not?” speaks of helpful tips on how to stay safe and healthy during the holidays. The central Idea of this article was ways we can celebrate the holidays yet still stay safe and follow precautions. The material was very easy to understand given that it was in bullet point form. I believe this article could have spoken a tad more about how relatives and elders can connect virtually during these times.

Guadalupe Perez- Assignment Week 12

One major takeaway I had from watching this election was that Nevada could not finish counting those ballots, also that it took several days. I kept going on google and checking who had won the 2020 elections then seeing all the states, some red, some blue yet still no winner. I would just get anxious thinking of what will happen after one is elected. The aftermath of this election was genuinely amazing, how the city came together to bond over the fact that trump had taken an L <3 The aftermath of this bonding at WSP was a little extreme given that it was trashed this previous Saturday 🙁 I will remember some memes, how Nevada barely did anything, trump wanting to sue states, and how we right now have to settle for Biden.

Gen Z interview – Guadalupe Perez

“Yes I would vote for this elections , in facts I early voted. To cast my vote means to speak my truth over who I want to elect  in the office and other branches within the government.”
“The way that this presidential election will affect gen Z in particular is that it will cause a huge movement over there own beliefs and rights. Gen Z are the future and when something is not right or it’s not benefiting there future they are ready to speak there truth and attack the opposite party.”
“The political issues that are important to me are immigration, COVID and climate change . I care about these things first because they are issues that hold a lot of concern in my life. The policies or plans that’s each candidate is trying to input will have an affect not only on me but many communities . Without climate change plan we won’t have a planet ????humans have created a huge damage over time it’s time to take action upon those issues and make change . Covid the way it’s manage is important to me, because it’s about lives that we are talking about. Not just any disease like the flu or a cold indeed this is a more deadly issue that people are facing. The next plan and phase is what is going to determine what protocols our country is going to take to improve upon this deadly disease. Finally Immigration is something that hits home for me as a first generation student whose parents immigrated from Mexico to the USA. The candidates actions and the way they are going to help my community is what’s is mainly important to me.”
Nely L., 18
“I already did. Casting my vote allows me to participate in the making of the government in which I live under. I am able to Vote for those who can’t “
“Gen z is now more open into learning about their own government and look ways to better it”
“Immigration, and abortion are important to me because relevant news are linked to my family as well as me as a woman.”
Maria C., 18
“Yes, I will be voting for this election. I think it’s very important not only for my generation but generations to come. By casting my vote I get to express my 15th amendment and have some control over the decisions being made in the country I live in.”
“This presidential election affects gen z in particular because our lives/futures basically depend on it. We have a lot to lose if we don’t make the right choice.”
“The most important political issues to me are universal healthcare. We are living a global pandemic that has left many without jobs. Many people have already been faced with the complications of Covid and it is important for everyone to have access to the care they need. Climate Change is very important to me too. The severity of it will only get worse; something needs to be done now.”

Guadalupe Perez – Gen Z

I read the article ” 6 things to know about Gen Z, politics and 2020″, The first specific thing that stood out to me from my reading was that most of what it was saying was pretty much true for the most part. The second thing would have to be how they graphed their results. The last thing that popped out for me was how the main topics of discussion were numbered and underlined, I do not really see that much often so that stuck out for me. I would say to a good extent these portraits align with majority of Gen Z because I read some sentences and was like “lol that’s me” but I can not speak for anyone else. I would add that Gen Z is not really encouraged to vote until just recently. They got right that we are may not vote because we are not really taught the process of voting and may not be confident with it. They missed on explaining certain reason why Gen Z is the way they are, for example, the voting is not because we do not want to it is because some of us do not know or are not encouraged to do so. I have a friend who won’t vote because he does not like either party and speaking to him about how important it is to vote is quite useless because he is very stubborn. I would add that, how some of us are very naĂŻve to voting because we do not really know much of it. After reading this piece I am feeling pensive because, how many more of my friends are not going out to vote because they do not think it is important? Also I am thinking that older people that are not Gen z who are reading this article might make their own interpretation of how every gen z youngster feels, thinks, or acts.

Week # 8 – Guadalupe Perez

a) The first thing I learned from “Backpacks V. Briefcases: Steps Toward Rhetorical Analysis” by Laura Bolin Carol is how where ever there is meaning there is persuasion, and how wherever there is persuasion there is rhetoric. Then she continued the paragraph and said ” In other words, most of our actions are persuasive in nature”. This is something she taught me because I unconsciously knew this but she had made it consciously clear and taught me this acknowledgement. The second thing I learned from this reading is what the word “exigence” means. The definition of exigence is an urgent need or demand. From reading this expert I think I can say that I have learned many things but ultimate last thing that I want to conclude about my learnings while reading is that one of the “first steps to understanding a piece of rhetoric is to look at the context in which it takes place.”, therefore when I view something that in a way is rhetoric better yet “persuasive” I know to look for the the exigence where the problem might be framed which can lead to the purpose that frames the response to a problem.

b) “In other words, most of our actions are persuasive in nature”.  The significance of this quote is that most of the things that we do are not just done you are persuade to do these things. Our own actions are persuasive in nature. We literally do things to persuade others and it is crazy that I see it that way now because wow like I may tell someone “omg the show dark desire is so good, there is a weird/freaky plot twist that I love” which may just be me saying what I think about the show but to another person this may lead to take the action of watching a show I was intrigued by.

c)This essay will affect the rhetorical analysis I am currently working on because I will make better analyzations on the speech speaker that I will be speaking on. I will put in affect what Laura Bolin Carol said about what the rhetor wants me to believe and what he is doing to accomplish so. I think this is very essential especially with the person I chose to do the rhetorical analysis on. I will put this information to effect on my writing .

Assignment – Week #6 Guadalupe

Orwell’s thesis speaks of how he believes the English language has been broken up by people which now appears inaccurate/ugly. Orwell then puts the blame on economics and politics for breaking up English language but he later states how “language is a natural growth” coming to a conclusion that this broken English can be repaired.

“A man may take to drink because he feels himself to be a failure, and then fail all the more completely because he drinks. It is rather the same thing that is happening to the English language” the meaning of this quotation is how a man drinks because he believes he is a failure but in fact he is not but the action of him drinking and being drunk actually makes him fail more. This stood out to me because it is quite true. I assume he is trying to say that you have the choice, For example you have the choice to actually feel like a failure and do good but sometimes a person might accept the feeling of being a failure and want to forget it. Instead of putting in the effort to confront your feeling of failure you choose the easy way out. So basically many people ignore the choice of actually writing good and take the choice of writing “ugly” because it is easier .

“Dying Metaphors”, yes I do see examples of this today. In fact it is my own writing that uses overused metaphors. Sometimes I find myself saying used metaphors to get to the point instead of continuing to write, which comes from laziness, which is a point he brought up. We, or maybe just I, I seem to find the easy way out but sometimes you just have to express yourself instead of breaking English more that it already is. I definitely find this critique valid because I am guilty of it, this is one of my wrongdoings and he pointed it out without even reading my writing which leads me to believe that it is valid.

Language use and politics intersect for me today because in order for me to advocate for something I need to speak and use English language that supports what I advocate for. Use of language that has been subjected for debate or misunderstanding is “blue lives matter”… that has been debated about and misunderstood. I am still confused about it because how does that even make sense, that use of language is just ugly because it doesn’t seem to make sense. A person is not blue, unless they are avatar and the way it is being used to defend the police is just weird.

Rhetorical Analysis of Campaign Ad – Guadalupe Perez

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCYN5MY5BHg
The audience for this 2020 campaign ad would be democrats, maybe young people as well. I believe this because Biden spoke on “healing America” and that is what a lot of people need right now. I also believe the audience for this ad would be young people because us young people are much into politics, given the circumstances we are in right now we are much more into politics, by circumstance I mean COVID, quarantine, racial injustices, trump…
This ad’s message is to promote “healing” to America. The argument this ad is making is that we are living through a crisis and we need leaders who will “heal” America.
The feeling this ad evokes is awareness, hope, and healing of situations. It shows many pictures and videos from the last four months so people are aware of what this ad is speaking of
This is a positive ad although it shows evidence of America in need of help I noticed that the sound that was being played in this ad sort of promoted hope. Also it speaks of how leaders will “heal” America which sounds pretty hopeful and positive to me, also it shows no gruesome photos or anything particularly negative.
The visual elements of this ad contribute to its messaging because it shows visuals of climate change, such as homes and streets being overflooded. It also shows a short clip of trees on fire. Approximately thirty seconds after these visuals it shows Biden speaking to a man at a power plant and on fields where you see the sun shining and the grass green. The sun shining and the grass being green where he is speaking to another man is no coincidence, this is a visual representation of a better place (compared to the short clips shown a few seconds ago). You automatically see the change from disaster to a safe place where people are calmly speaking to each other. We also see Biden shaking another man’s hand which comes off as caring/respectful.
The persuasive techniques used in this ad would have to be ethos, pathos, and logos. I believe that all three were well employed. As we start off this ad we see logos, for example, stating the obvious facts… we definitely are in a crisis- climate, racial injustice, economic, and health. That is a fact. This Ad also shows us visuals to remind us we need help, In a way this is considered logic. Through the middle we see pathos which is a sense of emotion, we see pathos through a visual of people protesting with posters in their hands and hear voices stating “no justice, no peace”. This is obviously used to show emotion, and make us feel a certain way. Ethos is being employed by the word “leaders” being said and showing people shaking hands with each other which comes off as a sense of agreement/authority.
This ad has to be very successful because it used all three persuasive techniques. Also we are in a pandemic which means we really can’t do anything but just hope for the best we can get, which bidens shows much of in his ad.

Week #3 : Guadalupe Perez

When reading “Shitty First Drafts” by Anne Lamott from Bird by Bird I felt as if it was okay to write a substandard first draft, but after reading “Rethinking the shitty first draft” I I understood why this method should not be immediately practiced or also that it should not have to make sense to you. Something that I learned from reading “rethinking the shitty first drafts” is that you should not aim for a mess in your work… when George Dila compared building a house to Lamott’s  “pour-it-all-out” strategy I found his comparison a bit extreme but I understood his ideology of Lamott’s strategy. If a builder starts building a house with all his materials on site, begins messing up the cement floors then this builder moves to work on the roof even though his floors are a mess, lastly remembers the electric wires needed to be put before the roof, then the builders house would be a total disaster. Which is why Dila believes careful builders should “go slowly” (Rethinking The Shitty First Draft pg.1). Which is why both writers should use a method that helps them. I completely agree, you should write your first drafts in a way that helps you better understand and complete your writing.

For my own process I do  both. For persuasive or informative essays I make sure to follow a format sometimes for poems too but usually I write none unless its mandatory for a class therefore I try to be careful on what I write. For free writing I usually just write whatever I want then re read it and take away what is not an asset of the assignment.
