I am at a point in my life where all I have in front of me are choices. These are not simple choices we made as kids about what clothes to wear to school or if it was worth missing homework to watch that favorite television show. These are not choices that will have minimal impact on my life, but will ultimately define my career path and me as an individual. Choices. The world itself is kind of scary because there is always the chance that I will make the wrong one and I will have to suffer for it. That cannot be changed. That fear will always be there. However, I have realized during my first few months at Baruch that I cannot let that fear stop me from making the most out of my education and college experience. I have had to make choices in these last couple of months, and I will admit that not all of them have been right. Mistakes have been made, but at the end of the day I am glad to have made those mistakes because they have changed me as an individual and altered my thinking in terms of what others expect from me, and what I expect from myself. Most importantly, I have realized these choices are going to be there all my life. There will be a point where I will be at crossroads in almost every situation. There will be an easy way and a hard way. An ethical way and one that is not ethical. A choice that is selfish and will only benefit me and a choice that will benefit everyone. I will have to choose when I am at that crossroads and if there is one thing that I learned from my first semester here at Baruch, it is that I cannot let my fear of choosing wrong stop me from choosing at all. It has been a great first year, and this period has made me mature in ways that four years in high school did not. I came in complaining that the atmosphere at Baruch was mundane but I have realized that I have to make the most of it or it will be boring no matter where I am attending college. As such, I have made the choice to get involved and it is starting to pay off as there are opportunities here to grow my skills that I could not see before.

My first semester here at Baruch College was awesome.  Being that I was only a part time student this semester.  I only had 2 classes 3 with freshman seminar with a 3 hour block in between the 2 classes it was great.  That block gave me so much time to walk around the city and get used to my new surroundings.  One thing im not looking foward to next semester is not having that time in between and being crammed with tons of work.

First semester math class was unpredictable and memorable. The professor and the students in the class were all very entertaining and made it a fun class to be a part of. The only thing that was difficult to deal with were the exams. This meme was the definition of many classes in my first semester, but math even more than the others. In math class, concepts seemed simple enough, and the problems I did for hw all were very easy. The quizzes the professor gave were just spit backs of the easy questions from the HWs. But the three exams he gave were extremely hard. He seemed to have purposely made the quizzes easy and find super hard questions for the exams. It was a big shock during the first test. And the second test was even harder. I studied as much as I could for later tests but they all seemed impossible challenges. Now I’m studying for the final, which is a cumulative test, and I’m worrying a lot about how difficult it will be. Especially since my math teacher took a trip to China last week. I’m not even sure when he is coming back but he left us to take a test without him and with out him teaching the last chapter, which was included in the test. I am now worried about math but hopefully when he comes back he’ll be more reasonable and give my class a curve for the last test.

My favorite workshop during freshman seminar was voices. I liked voices so much because I got to see the best monologues for all of the freshman seminar classes performed live on stage with professional actors. When I saw the actors presenting the monologues I really got a fell of what the student who actually wrote the monologue was feeling. I learned that I have in common a lot of the experiences all of the other freshman have as well in the first year of college. The actors presented a lot of the problems students were faces with coming into college and I found that I am not alone because many of those problems were very similar, if not exactly the same to the ones I have. Although I feel alone coming into such a bigger school compared to high school, going to voices made the whole school feel so much smaller because there were so many other kids having the same problems as I have. Voices was really comforting because all the freshmen got together to express themselves, and because we all have something in common, we are all currently in our first year of college, we really all felt a sense o relief when we found out we are not alone during this big change. Concluding freshman seminar with voices really got me to feel a sense of strength to move forward and continue my college career with success.

The transition to college was very hard for me. I came from a small private school so I know it would hard to adapt to all the people around be, and I wanted to make that transition as seamless as possible because I wanted to focus on my grade so they could be as high as possible. Since this is my first semester of college it was very hard for me to keep my grades up. I had to read pages upon pages of books almost every night and had to write numerous essays. Finally as the semester is coming to a conclusion, although I don’t have the grades I was originally hoping for, I am happy with the position I am in. I was able to focus on my schoolwork and at the same time make sure my transition to college was successful. This semester has been a little rough for me, I was not expecting the workload I was given, but it was a semester of experience and because now I have a good understanding of how college is, I know that I can do even better in the semesters to come and hopefully I will even get the grades I was looking for before the semester started.

the RUBEN MUSEUM!

The Ruben Museum as a good experience, but it was a tad bit boring. It was stale, there was nothing that caught my eye. But the early 14th century artwork was definitely relaxing to see. The antiques of the pieces, and the polished texture were really interesting. Also my favorite part of the museum had to be the little relaxing room in the corner, where you couldn’t even tough anything…..

It was cool because It was very relaxing and it was nothing like any room I’ve ever seen, and it was interesting.

Yup, that’s it.

To be honest, this would summarize my first semester of college.

There is so much work to be done all time timeeeee! But the sad part is that I always indugle myself with distractions such as TV shows such as Suits, Family Guy, and Justice. But there is always so much endless work to be done it’s a little too much sometimes. But anyways, My first semester at Baruch was decent, it was a disappointment in some ways and it was very good in others. I never really felt like a part of a community at Baruch, but I also feel the professors were pretty shitty. But on the good side I made couple really close friends, and also ate so many different kinds of food. It was a good experience, and although I won’t be staying at Baruch for more then 1 more semester, I will do my best to enjoy it to the most I can, regardless of how bad my teachers are. But yeah, I have so much homework to do and catch up on and it’s finals next week, sooooooooooo this is crazy! (ok no more then 500 words, I bet 200 is enough).

Although I did enjoy all the workshops we went to my favorite workshop we went to defiantly has to be the museum. I enjoyed all the statutes and the art and artifacts that were around me I got to know much about history and art. If I would’ve not gone to this workshop I would’ve not enjoyed myself and learned new things about a history outside of the united states. I know feel like a more well rounded person and will definitely go back to this museum and analyze it a lot more.

My Experience @Baruch

I took the photo above from the office of Dr. Martell, a finance professor at Baruch’s Zicklin School of Business, and a great friend of mine. I decided to upload this image because it is a clear example of one of the main reasons why I decided to attend Baruch College, it’s setting. Baruch’s downtown NYC location is fascinating. I am a Dominican born, Upstate New York resident and where I come from, a view like this one is impossible to find. Baruch’s setting is priceless. If you find a room with a view quite like this one, it’s hard for you to get up and leave it, or to refrain from taking a picture to say the least. When I first came to visit Baruch, I was not only impressed with it’s accredited academic environment but I was astonished with the view it had towards the rest of Manhattan. I am an adventurous person. I like to go out, hike, explore, see things that my eyes have never seen. And when I came to Baruch, my eyes were surely satisfied. I believe that setting has a lot to do with one’s ability to learn. When you are placed in an uncomfortable environment, learning does not come as easy due to the fact that you are not at ease with your surroundings. By attending Baruch College, I have learned what an amazing setting really is. Try studying in Dr. Martell’s office! The peacefulness of the environment is incredibly amazing. Not only that. Try walking outside of 25th st. Walk towards Park Ave! You’ll end up in Madison Square Park. Madison Square Park is an excellent place to go and “chill” for lack of a better word. It is part of my experience at Baruch because at the beginning of the semester I basically lived there when I wasn’t in class! It’s only a few blocks away, it has an outdoor cafe, trees (which are always fun to see in Manhattan) and you’ll be sure to hear birds chirping and squirrels dashing around looking for nuts to store for the winter. Walk a few more blocks and you’ll be on 5th Ave. One of America’s most well known avenues. Near Baruch you can find hundreds of restaurants, pricey but worth it. There is even a Dominican restaurant on 28th st. I strongly urge you to try it. By attending Baruch College, we go to school in the capital city of the world. Not only is Manhattan beautiful, but it is exciting, fast paced, intriguing, and merely indescribable. I am glad that I chose to attend Baruch College, not only because it has one of the best business schools in the country but also because it is located in the most interesting city in America, and the world. I hope that I remain a student at Baruch but I hope that If I ever transfer, I may transfer to a school with equal or greater setting than Baruch. My experience at Baruch College is much like no other experience thus far.

Dear Professor Remedios

I was absent for the midterm exam on Monday, 11/26/12, because I got in a car accident while driving to class. Is there any way I can make up the exam? Thank you for taking your time to read this.
