The Wild Akhtarul – Unrecognizable on Word Processors
Since I was a child, music made up a large part of my life. I began playing various instruments at a young age, usually picking up whatever looked interesting to me. I played clarinet for some years, but eventually dropped the instrument for a guitar instead. Why couldn’t I learn and play both? Who knows. However, as time passed, I realized that my reasons for playing also changed. Before, I solely wanted to imitate my favorite bands at that time, such as Sum 41 and Blink 182. I was very young at the time, mind you, so I didn’t really know what I was doing. Before long, my interests in music shifted greatly and, from my late middle school years onward, I began to become deeply involved and satisfied with the musical genre that is known as “indie”, or independent music. Bands such as Beach Fossils and Real Estate, for example, sounded more than fantastic to me. I let go of my old punk, ska ways and opted instead for a more mellow and smooth lifestyle, as several of my favorite indie bands happen to sound just like that. Beach Fossils and Real Estate are both great bands, bands that I have been listening for about three years, and I greatly appreciate what they can do with a guitar.
As a child, I never appreciated music from decades past. Growing up having played too much Tony Hawk Pro Skater seemed to have a strange impact on my brain; I was addicted to punk, ska, and alternative rock. While I still do “approve” of those genres, part of my growing tastes over the last few years include some of the quintessential bands of the previous generations. Fleetwood Mac and David Bowie are two great examples of such music. Fleetwood Mac means a lot to me in particular due to the fact that they were very popular amongst my closest friends, and I happen to have a lot of memories involving their songs.
Souls of Mischief – Step to my Girl
Old school rap and current underground hip-hop. The good stuff.
Cut Copy – Strangers in the Wind
The first ever indie song I have ever listened to, I began listening to Cut Copy at the end of eighth grade. This band started it all. I was never into the genre as much before these guys came along. While I did say music was a large part of my life even as a kid, I never attended a single concert until I began listening to independent music. Music matters a lot to me, and friends are quick to know it. I attend concerts almost every week, from small local Williamsburg shows to Tyler the Creator “big-shows”, I try to get as much out of the music world as I possibly can. Music inspires me; I was, in a sense, saddened by recent “mainstream” music (not to offend anyone who loves any song on Billboard 100, that’s totally fine), but under-appreciated genres like indie, underground rap, and dying trance really got me going. I am listening to music as I type this, and I listen to music for almost every other thing I do. It surrounds me constantly, and I appreciate every second of it. A defining aspect of someone is the music they listen to, in my opinion, and I love meeting new people with an extensive knowledge of music, or with similar tastes. Music for me in a nutshell.
Mat Zo – Synapse Dynamics (Arty Remix)
Well made trance. I make trance.

I’m totally with you on “generational” music — more and more I’m enjoying “older” music and love how (quality) music can transcend time.
