Freshman Seminar Fall 17 BWB

Model U.N.

A few weeks ago, I went to an informational meeting for the Model U.N. club because I was very interested in what the club did and had to offer. I only stayed for twenty minutes because I had work so I didn’t really get to grasp the whole concept of the club. One morning while I was waiting for my drink at Starbucks, I bumped into this upperclassmen, Zain. Zain and I went to high school together at Midwood and saw each other on the bus to school very often. He advised me that I should join a club, and I mentioned Model U.N. To my surprise, Zain is the president of the club! We sat down at Starbucks and he literally explained EVERY THING to me about the club. I am very interested and hopefully next year, when I have more free time I would be able to join a club or two!

Baruch Performing Arts Center

At times, the William and Anita Newman Library can be fairly crowded, especially in the afternoon. With homework assignments to complete and an exam to study for, I was in need of a quiet, empty space in which I could use. I only had around an hour left of my break left and I knew it would take me quite a while to find a seat in the library, so I resorted to the basement of Baruch, where the Performing Arts Center is. I was able to locate a space in which I could use and I was pleased to find out how sanctioned it is. Within no time, I was able to settle down and begin working on my assignments, with nothing to disrupt me. While I was there, I also received some information on the upcoming events the Performing Arts Center had. There are a wide variety of events to be held and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

STARR Career Center

During my first few days of being a student at Baruch, I let myself wander around the huge vertical campus.  I stumbled across the STARR Career Development Center and, without even walking into the room, I was shocked at the information provided. All around the halls surrounding the room, there were various posters, displays, and worksheets- all acting as various resources for the students. I let myself stop to read all of the graphs and lists posted- each display they had posted provided in-depth information about possible job routes. Before leaving I gathered various worksheets and pamphlets- I was happy because of all the resources Baruch had available.

Game Room

Since I work on Tuesdays and Thursdays I wasn’t able to join or attend a club. I didn’t have a chance to meet anyone outside my classes. Today, however, my boss was willing to give me a day off to study , but I used this time to try to find a club of my interest. Instead of finding a club I found the game room. Although it was packed I was able to meet new friendly people and play a game of pool. I was glad I ran into the game room and I enjoyed spending my time there. Even though I could’ve been making shmoney the game room was worth the day off. Next time ill try to join a club…

SACC Tutoring

I always do pretty well when it comes to math but the class that I am in moves very quick and covers a lot in one class so I was a little behind and had a few questions when it came to the homework. I then made an appointment at the SACC Tutoring center to just have a few questions answered. My original appointment was canceled so I had to reschedule but I am happy that it was canceled because when I rescheduled I was the only one on my session and received a lot of help from the tutor.

William and Anita Newman Library

One day I was just chilling enjoying my break until I was reminded I had a paper due in English class in a few hours. Because I had Sociology in a few minutes I told myself I would go to the library after to type up my paper and print it out. So after Sociology I headed to the library and waited in a long line until a computer was free to use. It took forever to finally log in but once I did I started typing as fast as I could. Before you know it my paper was complete and I went to print it out and I even had a few minutes to spare before the class started. From this experience I knew the library was helpful if I ever needed to use a computer or even type up something quick again if need be.

Exeq

A few weeks ago I was sitting on the plaza and I was approached by someone who was handing out flyers for an app called “Exeq.” Its an app started by students and its purpose is to help students budget better and save money. Later that day I saw a post on the Baruch Class of 2021 Facebook page about the app as well. They were looking for people at the school to spread the word and be Brand Ambassadors. I decided to apply for the position and they responded saying to come by their office to meet with them and learn more about the app. After getting some more info I was excited to get on board and help other students budget better. Also, you should all check out the app.

Club meeting

Since i didn’t have much school spirit in high school, I decided i should be more involved in my college. It is a new school after all, I need to get to know Baruch more. So far, I’m liking college. I went to a club meeting for student government and forced my friends to join me. I mainly went for the food, but i ended up liking the vibe. What really caught my attention was the homecoming committee. My high school was in the Bronx so it was too ghetto to have homecoming and the types of parties you see in movies. I was intrigued by usg I actually think i am going to join! yay!

Student Government :)

So its been a month since school started and hence I feel a little more comfortable I decided to go to a club meeting and check it out. I wanted to get more involved in the school so I chose student government. Once I got there everyone was super friendly. At first they talked about what student government was and the positions there were and what they did. Afterward we got to eat and mingle. To conclude the meeting they made us play a game which I thought was pretty fun because we got to know other freshman who weren’t in our block. I think this experience was really fun and I would totally recommend others to go to club meetings and check it out.

Hillel

After getting out of class one day, Leora Fadlun and I were looking to eat involved in a club on campus. Fortunately we were met by a representative from the Hillel who suggested we check it out. To my surprise, the event was pretty informative about the impact of current events on our daily lives. We watched a news correspondent explain the horrible situation in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, sometimes events like these are the only things that help bring our country together. After the short video clip, we spoke about ways in which we as individuals could bring about greater national unity.
