Freshman Seminar Fall 17 CFB

Career Workshop- Finance 101

Hello all. This is the last blog post of this three-part series. After much insistence, I’m going to write this blog post about a past career workshop that I thought I did not need to blog about.  Using my memory, I will try to recreate this experience.

It was on a Wednesday of the 25 of October. The room seemed a little full, but not that full as I expected. Immediately after sitting down, the presentation started. The speaker first addressed the basics of finance like budgeting and other things. I then received some pamphlets and papers about finance.

The most interesting thing that I learned was about retirement. I really did not know that you had to save for retirement. I assumed that all occupations would give people pensions for their retirement. In addition, I thought that Social Security would help all retirees, but this program is an uncertainty due to the growing US debt. I also learned about special programs like 401(k) plans that help people to save up before retiring.

This workshop helped me be more mindful of saving up money for later. I also feel more likely to choose jobs that offer some type of pension or 401(k) planning, so that I don’t spend my later years counting every single penny I find. I will try to use the Starr account more so that I can find a job that suits my interests and goals.

Starr Career Development Center Workshop

On October 19, I went to a Starr Career Development Center fair for Freshmen and Sophomores. This workshop is a way to help first and second-year students understand the recruiting process for most internships and jobs. It gave information on ways to get into early ID, pipeline, and leadership programs, many of which will lead to internships. They also gave a fifteen-minute conversation on recruiting events, networking events and the recruiting process, and an introductory resume advice.

I also received few brochures and pamphlets on career programs for first and second-year students. One of them is Peers for Careers Program, which is within T.E.A.M Baruch and was the first special program within the STARR Career Development Center. This program helps college students, staff, and alumni with career planning and exploration, resume writing, job search, interviewing, cover letters, and much more. This seems like a program I would join and most definitely benefit from. This program will give me valuable skills to land a successful internship with my intended major.

Career- Hillel Tech Fair

For my last and final blog for Freshman Seminar, I went to the Hillel Tech Fair on Thursday, November 16 at 12:30, during club hours. I found out about the fair through a friend who was looking for an internship or job to apply for. The fair took place the multipurpose room on the 1st floor. The flyer we were given said that five envelopes around the room were hidden for anyone to take. Inside the envelopes was a prize ranging from an Amazon Echo to a $10 Chipotle gift card.

When we went in finally inside they were serving free food and drinks to everyone. They had falafel sandwiches, curry chicken sandwiches, salads, etc… After everyone took a seat we were introduced to our panelists who would talk about their experience as a entrepreneur and answer questions from the host of the Hillel Tech Fair. In addition to the panel, their were also booths on the side introducing their companies and offering internships and jobs.

There were at least six different panelists that came from their own unique company that they either started or work for. One panelist started a business in education and tutoring for college students. Another panelist started a Messenger/Discord related platform for sport lovers. As the panel continued, the panelist gave us advice as young business majors and future entrepreneurs. They said “Throughout your future careers you’re going to fail, the more you fail, the more you learn and grow from your mistakes so don’t be afraid of failure.” As a business major, I would say that their advice struck me at first because of my fear of failure in life. However they were only speaking the truth. Throughout my future career there will be times where I’ll have to deal with failure, and with these failures I’ll have to learn and grow to start from scratch again.

Psychology Research Volunteering (Career)

For my Introductory Psychology class (PSY 1001), my professor, David Sitt has required that we participate in 5 hours worth (1 hour=1 credit) of psychological studies. These studies range from participating in online surveys to being a part of an experiment in a lab setting. Participating in these studies are vital to the development of my budding career because not only do they allow me to contribute to the field that I intend to become part of by being a direct test subject but they also allow me to better understand the experiments, surveys, and more that I may one day find myself organizing.

The surveys themselves typically aren’t that interesting but occasionally approach interesting hypothetical situations. They are mostly related to business (as to be expected from Psychologists graduating from a business school), but could also be related to situations that aren’t necessarily related to business. For example, one of the surveys mentioned groups which, while found in a business setting, are also found outside of business and jobs. The survey itself explored my general background and thoughts as well as how much I appreciated the most recent group I worked with. Another survey explored how we make decisions on who to be leader and who to be part of a group based only on their age, experience, and gender. The survey featured you dragging “Leader” to 1 out of 6 boxes and “Group Member” to 1 out of 6 boxes 3 different times.

Besides the surveys, there is also lab experiments. While I have yet to participate in a lab experiment myself, I have signed up for one and expect to attend it for 4 hours this Monday (11/27/17). The requirements for the experiment was for me to have normal (or corrected to normal) vision and no existing addictive disorders. I am personally excited to participate in and find out what this experiment is about.

LinkedIn

Recently I have attended a Starr Career Development center workshop for LinkedIn. The workshop focused on LinkedIn and how it was a valuable tool for people to network with others and connect with businesses. The workshop explains how LinkedIn works and how useful it can be. Although it was only one hour long it was full of information. LinkedIn is a way to connect to professionals, because resumes and such can be lost easily. LinkedIn also recommends jobs and resumes which can help benefit you. They taught me hope to make a good profile as it is similar to Facebook in several ways, such as the way you make connections is similar to the way you make friends on Facebook. The layout for both is also very similar. There were people of all ages their as I was surprised to see that the room was packed to the brim. I will definitely use LinkedIn in the future because it is a very important tool and is very helpful for my future.

STARR Career Workshop- LinkedIn

I had the pleasure to sit in a LinkedIn workshop, hosted by the STARR career center. This workshop was educational and showed me how to create and start using the site LinkedIn. This is a site that helps you get jobs and internships, based on what field you want to work in the future. The workshop  wasn’t very long so it wasn’t as informative as it could’ve been.

They had me set up my account, which was similar to signing up for multiple social media sites such as Instagram and Facebook. The layout of the site was easy to maneuver and it is good for you to be able to gain internships during your time in college.

I think this site should be used by every student at Baruch because it is easy to  maneuver and because it will help get you internships that are needed if you want to get a job in many fields of work. Internships provided by this site gets you an edge over people in job searching as those who don’t get an internship during college, don’t have a resume that is as good as yours.

Starr Career Development Center

I attended a workshop with a group of friends going into the room oblivious on what to expect. It was on LinkedIn a site that helps build your profile and provide network for future  jobs opportunities.

The foundation of LinkedIn is very much like Facebook. You first make your own profile about yourself. Afterwards you make connections with others and chat. It look very easy to use as it was very similar to Facebook expect it was much more professional, can’t put some silly things on your profile or chat informally.

LinkedIn sounds like a very good opportunity to gain more job opportunities. As you put your resume out there for people to look at and maybe take interest to you. It can help you with finding a job easier not having to go to different places to give people your resume to look at.

After learning about LinkedIn I”m planning to use it in the near future to look for a job or internship. But I wouldn’t recommend LinkedIn to others because thats increasing the competition.

Writing Center

My time at the writing center was educational and inspirational. I learned how to write academic essays in the present and past tense. I also learned sentence structure which I struggled with most of high school. The atmosphere was quiet but you could tell everyone was learning something from the experience just as I was. The past and present tense were difficukt for me to grasp at first but after a while, I began to get the hang of it and now can separate the two at will.

Sentence structure was the down part of my essays throughout high school and my first two college papers. A comment I would always get on essays were “sentence flow was poor” or “writing was sloppy” or “had could points but your writing was disordered and sloppy”. But now after my time at the writing center I can now write sentences clearly in a certain tense and I don’t have poor sentence structure.

My time at the writing center was enjoyable and allowed me to realize my mistakes in my writing skills. This experience compels me to want to go there again if I’m having writer’s block or I feel my writing is not clearly getting my point across to the reader.

Moma

Recently me and my friends a have decided to embark on a journey to the Museum of Modern Art or MoMa. It is an art museum located at midtown Manhattan. Their collection includes modern and contemporary art. When I think of art I think of Greek sculptures or the Renaissance, modern art is not what I think of.

Although I can appreciate the time and effort the artists took in creating the work I do not understand most of it. And I was certainly confused at times when other people seemed to admire the beauty of the art. However some of the exhibits and pieces were really astounding to me and how could someone think of that . Personally I struggle with creating art such as drawing which I am not great at. So I can really appreciate a finely crafted sculpture because that is tremendous more difficult than drawing in my opinion. The museum was also very aesthetically pleasing and there were man other visitors that day.

I would say I preferred the contemporary pieces as the modern pieces felt confusing and over hyped. And our culture has definitely changed so I guess what is considered art changes as well.

Starr Career Development Center Workshop

For this post, I decided to attend a workshop offered by the Starr Career Development Center. This workshop focused on LinkedIn and how it is a useful resource to obtain job opportunities related to your future career.

In this workshop, they explained how LinkedIn works and how it is very similar to Facebook. LinkedIn has a very similar format as Facebook, such as that you make your own profile, make connections (like making friends on Facebook), and send messages between your connections. It is like a Facebook for the professional world. Seeing how easy it was to use and how similar it was to a website I already use encouraged me more to start using this resource.

They talked about how important it was to have and use this resource to help you build up experience in your career. They talked about how LinkedIn is a place where professionals connect and offer many job opportunities. Your profile on LinkedIn acts as your resume. They explained how LinkedIn lists job opportunities for you based on your interests and location. Professionals can look at your resume and contact you through messages on LinkedIn and visa versa. It is a great resource to look for a job in the field that you are interested in. I think that this is a much safer place to look for a job as opposed to other job searching sites such as Craigslist where some job ads aren’t real.

I found this workshop very informative and I’m glad that I attended it. If it weren’t for this, I don’t think I would have known how important this resource is and how it can benefit me in my path towards my career. I definitely will be creating my LinkedIn profile and start using it to benefit me in my future career.
