STARR MARKETING CAREER EXPO

I decided to attend this workshop to understand more about marketing since I need to know more about marketing and advertising for some of my businesses. When I got there, I just realized that this is about the marketing industry, not really the place for an entrepreneur like me. However, I ended up learning something helpful as well as how to distinguish marketing and advertising.

Marketing Carrer Expo is a networking event for marketing professionals to meet Baruch undergraduate students to connect, recruit and share industry knowledge.

From Marketing Career Expo, I know the difference between marketing and advertising, integrated marketing communications, integrated marketing communications for job opportunities. Besides, there is an interesting way to make a resume, it is by videos.

People usually get confused by the definitions of marketing and advertising because they think that they are the same. Basically, marketing is about business strategy, financial management, budget & pricing, product quality &, development, sales & distribution, advertising & communications. While advertising is about creative strategy & development, media planning/buying, production, promotion, public relations, events & sponsorship, social media.

Through integrated marketing communications for job opportunities, there are fields such as digital marketing advertising agencies. In digital advertising, there are digital agencies, social media agencies, digital services firms, digital media agencies, advertising agencies, entertainment agencies, and media agencies (planning/buying). Besides, there are advertising, trade promotion, special events in public relations, consumer promotion, direct response.

In entertainment agencies, there are shopper/retail agencies and sports agencies.

There are media companies such as Time Warner, Verizon, ABC, NBC, CBS, Radio Networks, Out of Home, Conde Nast…

After the professors’ presentation, students who sat in group together can discuss with professionals in their group as well as communicate with each other.

Companies participated in the event includes PG MediaBrands, Horizon Media, McCann WorldWide, High 5 Games, Publicis Media, iCrossing, Newsday, R/GA, GroupM, Omnicom Health Group, 4A’s, MAIP, Status Labs, 20th Century, PRSA & IMG Agency + Records.

Blog post #3

I scheduled an appointment with STARR Career Development Centre, to help me proceed and explore the job opportunities. So firstly, I made an appointment to draft my first resume as I had no idea how to start and how to make a resume which I could upload on my STARR profile and use for applying for other jobs too. I went there and met my career counselor. We started discussing and she explained me the format, the points to mention in my resume, the main categories that I need to cover etc. The headings included education, work experience, activities, honors and awards, skills and interests/hobbies. She was really cooperative and patient which helped me understand things even better. We had a conversation for about 25 minutes. Then she handed me a booklet which I could use to draft my resume. Then we decided that I ll make my resume covering all the points she told me to and then to again make an appointment so that my resume could be reviewed and I could make necessary changes. So after a week, I scheduled an appointment with her and went to see her. This time we started with discussing all that I mentioned in my resume. She made all the changes and she elaborated the points so well. The changes really made a difference and my resume looked a lot more professional. I told her that I don’t really have much to write under work experience but she explained and I got points to write in that section too. Then after fixing my resume, we had a conversation about how to engage in other activities and what other things I should do which could go on my resume and could make it even more stronger. Going to STARR and being guided by the counselor was a great experience and really helpful.

Library worshop

On Nov 9th, I along with my English classmates went to the library workshop to learn about how to properly use citation and giving credit to sources we use in our writing. The atmosphere is calm and quiet probably because the presenter wasn’t enthusiastic enough, but we kind of liked it, she began the conversation by showing us the example of a half fill or half empty water bottle which alludes to the idea that when writing, people have different perspective and they all can be correct. To be honest, citing a source is the most annoying part when I’m writing, not because I didn’t study and understand the sources, it’s because I’ve done my research properly, but the procedure is too complicated for me, which gets me agitated. Back to the story, the librarian continued to talk different sources, such as article, magazine, journals, etc. She moved on by introducing to us the Baruch library data base, which I already learned from somewhere else. Then, she went in depth on how to borrow writing sources from all over the world because the Baruch library is connected to a wide variety of data base. Since we were in some sort of computer lab room, there were enough computers for us to use, and she demonstrated every step on how to use the Baruch library data base to us. It was hard to remember everything at once, but I at least managed to learn how I’ll be searching for sources when writing my next English paper. I’ve also learned from this workshop that there are different librarians focusing on different major or topics, which we can ask separately if we have any questions on their focused topic because they already know the research area and the experts that are designed to thoroughly explain the issue we will be discussing. Overall, the things I learned are generally interesting but some of them are also common knowledge because I may have learned them beforehand. The one thing I’ll take away is how to properly use the Baruch library data base.

Major and Minor fair

Picking classes for ourselves for the first time is intimidating. I don’t know what classes to pick that will suit my ability and not so difficult. Right before the weekend my appointment time was due, the email of the Major and Minor fair came into my sight. It turned out to be very helpful.

It was during club hour on a typical Thursday. The fair was held right in the multiple purpose room where I had my convocation day. Each department has each own table and professor was sitting right there waiting for us to ask questions. I went straight to the actuarial science department, and saw my advisor – Tim. Rather than giving me pieces of advices in the crowded noisy conference room, he suggested me to go to his office hours for more detailed guidance. Later, he laid out a plan of courses that I should take for the next four semesters. And he also gave me some advice on what I can learn on my own time to backup my knowledge excel and computer programming in the field of insurance.

All in all, I am glad that I have attended this Major and Minor fair. It was simply nice to have a clear mind about my future study plan and get a step early to plan ahead. I have took a gap year off after high school, therefore I plan to take summer courses to help speed up. After the Major and Minor fair, I went to the actuarial science society. From there, the club president gave some more information on the classes I can take, which professor would be the best for certain class… It was awesome to find that there are so many people that I can actually reach out for help.

NABA

On November 16, 2017, The National Association of Black Accountants held an event called “Building a Mentee, Mentor Relationship”. In this event I was taught many subtle things on what to do when you are having a business relationship with your mentor. They talked about things like making your mentor sit before you sit when having lunch/dinner. A big subtle thing I learned that seemed strange was that do not put salt and pepper on your food before you try the food out first. If a person was to do this, it is shown as a negative trait when you and your mentor has a big age difference. One other thing that I learned in this event is to always try and order the same thing your mentor is ordering. This actually makes a lot of sense because if you order the same thing as they eat you will finish approximately the same time they are done eating, and this is really a big thing because if you were to order something different you would be taking up the other persons time.

Major and Minor Fair

On Thursday, I went to the Major and Minors Fair. There was quite a lot of people there, but the place was quite compact since I expected the fair would be bigger and a lot more spacious. Each table had signs stating certain majors and representatives of those majors sat in these tables. At the same time, each major section had flyers where it listed the requirement classes we must take if we wanted to major in a particular field. This event somewhat assisted me because I now have a greater idea of which classes I will have to take if I want to major in a particular field. For me, I want to major in Finance therefore, I must take additional economics and finance classes which I don’t mind taking. I also had to take some management and marketing classes which I think is quite nice because I always wanted to see what these majors are about. I also think taking these courses will be helpful for me in the future since the world has become more digital and I think I can definitely benefit from them even though they don’t really relate to my major. Although most of these required classes to take for a particular major are all posted online, I think it is better to go to an event to be more guaranteed that these classes need to be taken for my major rather than it being optional or unnecessary classes. Overall, my experience in the fair was okay however, I was expecting more insightful information rather than general information that I can find on the Internet. For my next few semesters at Baruch, I probably won’t be able to take these required classes since there is a Baruch curriculum that I have to go through and also the business Zicklin requirements. Therefore, probably only until my junior year is the time where I can actually take classes that are specifically designed for my major.

Starr Career

I joined the Marketing Career Expo on this Thursday. I had a hard time to login my Starr Career and found an available event to join. My friend told me this workshop in last minute, so I was late when I got there. They didn’t allow me to get in at first because all the tables were full. Finally, a career director helped me to get in.

I watched several presentations from professors Barry Soloff, Anthony Perrotto, and Debi Feinman. They talked about the difference between marketing, advertising, and marketing communications.

The first professor used the power point to show us the definition about the Marketing and Advertising. Marketing include the business strategy, financial management, product development, and sales and distribution. Advertising include media planning, production, and promotion. Moreover, he also talked about the integrated marketing communications job opportunities. He introduced the digital advertising and media cooperations and so on.

Another professor used a totally different way to show us video resume. He showed us a student’s video resume who study the photographing and film. It was an amazing video which I never saw it before. He used a funny style to introduced himself and showed us several his works and job experiences. This was a brand new world to me and let me know this different way to let us understand more about myself which will help me a lot in my resume. Some company required this kind of video, and I think this can show people aintegrated and real person.

From this workshop, I learned a lot of information about how to find a job especially for the student like me who study in Marketing major. I think it’s really useful for senior who are struggling to apply company. I think I need to joined more career workshops because it will help me on finding a job in the future.

Major & Minors Fair

On Thursday 11/9/17, I went to the major & minors fair with my friends. The purpose I went is because like most of the others, I’m confused about what major I should take. The main reason is that I don’t know a lot about each of the major. Don’t know what kind of job is related to that major. So I went to the major & minors fair, there is a lot of major and minors there. The first one I went is Marketing, this is the one I felt to be most interest. I ask some of the questions that I had. One of them is what is the major of marketing. I also went to the Finance, Economic, Management, etc. There were many major there, so I went to the ones that I felt to be interesting. Some of the major are more popular than others, like finance and economics. There is a group of student that crowed around the front of the table. So, I didn’t get to ask any of my questions. Instead, I was listening to the questions and answers other get. For most of us, we have the same problem with the major. So, I just stayed on the back of the line and listened to others. There were also some of the major that I didn’t felt a lot of interest, but I still went to get more information about it. Maybe there is one of major that I found to be interesting about all. Having to ask about the fair. I notice that there are major that seems to be fun, but the job that relates to is tedious as it sounds. I think it’s important to know what kind of career you would get after graduating with the major learned. If it’s hard to find a job or job is very dull to you. Maybe it’s not the best major you should take.

Majors and Minors Fair

My friends and I went to Majors and Minors Fair two weeks ago. I am a person who is difficult to decide things, so I have not been able to determine my own major. Before I went to this event,I hope this event can help me to decide my major.

I thought about major in finance, economic, actuary science, psychological…I thought many majors that I would like to have but I vetoed them with different reasons like this major is hard to find job;this major is hard to study;I don’t really like this major. etc. At that event time, my thought for major is human resource management or marketing and minor is new media art.

Therefore, I went to search the majors I was interested at that time which is human resource management and marketing. They gave me flyers about the major course requirements. I did gain many pieces of information from this event. I learned the marketing has 3 types; I learned if I want to have a minor in marketing I need to finish the literacy art minor first so I may finish the new media art for minor first then take the minor in marketing; I knew the management also have 3 types, the one I chose is human resource management but after this even I also interesting at operation management. Unfortunately, I can’t find the minor about new media art in that fair. This minor is the one I like most but this event didn’t have it.

Overall, this event is good to help me figure out what major courses I need to take for each major. This fair has many majors that give students to choose. However, after this event, I have still been difficult to decide a major. I think I  would like to choose a major in operation management or human resource management.

Bystander Intervention Training

On Thursday, Nov 16, I attended a workshop during my break time. This workshop is to provides awareness and prevention education to students about sexual harassment & assault, relationship violence, stalking, bystander intervention and gender based interpersonal violence. Sexual violence affects women and men. About 1 in 3 women and nearly 1 in 6 men were victims of contact sexual violence at some point in their lives. Nearly 23 million women and 1.7 million men have been the victims of rape or attempted rape at some point in their lives. The representative starts with bystander, which means someone who around the situation but not taking part. She provides us several example of sexual harassment, Brock Turner, who committed a sexual harassment. Luckily, he was caught by the police. What is consent? Consent is an informed, voluntary and mutual decision to engage in agreed upon sexual activity. Each person must clearly communicate his/her willingness and permission to engage in sexual activity. The representative show us the ten signs of a healthy relationship are comfortable pace, trust,  independence, honesty, loyalty, respect, equality, compassion, taking responsibility, and communication. Having a clear communication is significant with your partners.

Most of us as a bystander, watching someone was assaulted by others, most common is we can avoid something happen by our actions. As the video plays in the workshop, who are you while you are around the situation, act as a stranger, a bystander, not taking any action to avoid someone being harassment or assault. The most impression from the video is encourage us be an active bystander, it is important to step in to help prevent when someone is in danger. It is our responsibility to protect one another, take action to avoid the tragedy. Whether or not you were able to change the outcome of the situation, by stepping in you are helping prevent sexual violence.
