Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DTC

Visiting the Majors and Minors Fair

On 11/9/17, I visited the Majors and Minors fair that took place at the first floor of the Newman’s Vertical Campus. When I entered the room, I saw many tables that were divided depending on the type of major. The first major that I visited was marketing. The second was computer Information. Both were quite appealing and the students even gave out papers that told us what classes to take for that specific major or minor. The only issue that I had with the place was that it was packed with people. It wasn’t a delightful experience but it will certainly pay off in the future.

Resume Workshop

I went to a resume workshop with my few friends. The resume workshop was very helpful and gave a Resume & Cover Letter Writing Guide. A good resume has few important aspects. For example, a resume must be one page, everything should be neat and consistent so it’s easy to read for the employer. A resume should contain these elements: contact information, education, work experience, skills and activities (optional). For each bullet, there should be three parts: an action verb, a specific task that is quantified and a specific outcome or result. For the experience section, list only past and current experiences with date and not future plans. For future needs to revise your resume, you can attend a resume workshop at the Starr Career Development Center or make a one on one appointment with a counselor through Starr Search. Overall, it was a great workshop to attend.

Starr Career Development Center

My friends and I attended Starr Career Development Center’s fair. The fair started from 8:30 am, and they prepared good breakfast for us. Instructors were assigned to each table. We all formed a group and rotate in counterclockwise so that we can talk to as many instructors as we can.  Based on instructor’s’ experiences, the fair is mostly about entrepreneurship, running in a new business. During the fair, instructors told us what is entrepreneurship is, why they started their own business, how did it change their lives and perspectives, and what is important skill to have to run the businesses.

Entrepreneurship is the activity of setting up a business, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit. Some instructors said they started their own businesses while they go to college, or instead of going to college, literally after they graduated from high school.  I thought that’s what only smart people can do. However, they also told us how it is important to go to college and learn knowledge step by step. I could find some meaning why we study in college. One common thing that I found out while I was listening to multiple instructors was that they all said communication skill is extremely important factor in business success.  Of course, in order to maintain good relationship with business partners, and also to make other people like you.

That fair was explicitly for people who interested in Business, but the many information I received was actually very useful to me. The instructors told us what entrepreneurship is in detailed which makes me become more interested in business field.  Now I feel more positive to study in college and I will be sure I can find out what I really like to do in next few years.

Majors and Minors Fair

Coming into Baruch, I had no idea what I want to major in. I am still lost and have no idea what I want to do with my future. Attending this fair was somewhat beneficial because at least now I know what Baruch has to offer. After the fair, I went home and tried to research some of the majors to find what I am most interested in. At the moment, I am most interested in psychology, but I do not want to pursue a career as a psychologist because I do not think it suits me. Since that probably will not work out, I thought I could major in marketing instead and minor in psychology since they are interrelated. This seems to be the best option for me, but I still do not feel satisfied. I really want to pursue something that makes me look forward to the next day, something that makes my heart beat fast, and something that I just feel happy doing…but what is that something?

Resume Writing Workshop

Since the deadline for the third blog is close, my friends and I decided to attend a workshop to complete the career part. We went to the Dining Etiquette Workshop and found out that formal dressing was required. So, we couldn’t get it there and had to look for something else. We went to the starr office to get more information on the workshops.
On Thursday, November 2nd, I attended the Writing Winning Resumes workshop during club hours. The experience was funny because the lecturer was late for over half an hour. However, she did a great job on the lecture and I learned a lot of techniques on writing an effective resume. The most useful part for me was the bullet points part. I now know what I should put for the bullet points to make my resume a concise and impactful one. I gathered plenty of valuable information there.
Throughout the entire experience, the one thing that really benefited me the most was not the workshop itself, but the process of finding out what kind of career support Baruch provides. Baruch does have strong resources for its students. Workshops are scheduled on multiple days of a week at different time period. Staffs are there to help you with resumes and cover letters. What you can get will be a lifelong benefit. Thus, it’s a very significant to find out how one can get the most out of it.

Major and Minors Fair

Last week, a few friends and I were present at the Major and Minors Fair that happened on Thursday. The whole room was very crowded and much of the room was filled with conversations between professors and students looking for a major or minor they might like. Most of the majors that were occupied were those such as financing, accounting, and marketing which was unsurprising since Baruch is known for its business courses. I was able to find who I believe were the professors that teach Computer Information Systems shortly after arriving and they were able to inform me of the courses I would have to take in order to be able to enroll in their classes. This was extremely helpful because not only did they tell me what I would have to take in order to get into my major but also what other computer-related courses I could choose in Baruch. This event was essential in that it helped other students and myself discover what we felt was an appropriate major to earn a degree in the future.

Workshop: resume writing guide

We went to a workshop which was called “resume writing guide” last Thursday. The professor there told us that we were in the Baruch and resume was pretty necessary for us. Resume is really the first impression to an employer and it can help employers know us better.
First of all, the resume must convince the employer within a matter of seconds that you are a qualified candidate for the position and should be interviewed. Therefore, it is necessary that you put significant effort into creating a resume that is clear, concise and relevant to the position.
Every resume has its own format. The chronological resume is the most widely used format. Its defining feature is the listing of work experience in reverse chronological order, with the most recent work experiences listed first. Most employers prefer this format.
Here are some useful tips for writing a resume. Resumes must be one page, unless you have significant work experience. Font size should be between 10 and 12 point and margins can be ½ inch to 1 inch. Bolding is used minimally and consistently, to emphasize what is most important. And each bullet has 3 parts: an action verb, a specific task that is quantified, and a specific outcome or result.
And above all, always be truthful about your accomplishments and background.

Majors and Minors Fair

I went to the majors and minors fair in the multipurpose room today. When I first walked in it was kind of a throwback. It gave me a flashback of orientation, when we all had to come here and take our photos for our CUNY ID. There fair itself was actually very helpful. I learned about majors such as journalism, psychology and real estate. I got to ask questions about what jobs you can get in those fields, as well as the difference between having a masters in a degree as opposed to just having a bachelors. Some tables such as journalism gave us a lot of handouts, whereas others such as psychology didn’t have any handouts at all. For the most part it was a good experience and I’m glad I went because it helped me come a lot closer to choosing a major. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. Baruch Voices

For my second blog post, I decided to attend Baruch Voices to acquaint myself with the amount of diversity Baruch College has. Baruch Voices was certainly a unique and entertaining experience because the ideas shared differed greatly from one another. Also, you never know what tone or message each presenter is going to deliver so it made it more surprising and exciting. One of my favorite presentations was about the story of how Squidward was able to form a band in one of the Spongebob episodes. The presenter described the story in a way which made it seem like a personal, realistic event but towards the end of the presentation, it is revealed that he was actually describing a Spongebob episode. I was so surprised that I was actually fooled by this and it gave me a good laugh. Overall, Baruch Voices taught me about the different life experiences students go through and also showcased the amount of talent these students possess.

Blog Post

For this weeks blog post I decided to keep it professional and head over to a museum. I visited the MET and checked out their section on the Hudson River School, which has been coined as Americas first artistic fraternity. The reason why I decided to look at this section is because, ever since my sophomore year of high school, I have been intrigued by the sublime and its effect on people, specifically artists and writers. These writers and artists have been so heavily influenced by the sublime, due to its supposed healing effects on the psyche. I wanted to experience this myself, while going to see paintings might not equate to what these men saw, I can try. What I came out with this is that these paintings had no real effect on me. I felt bored on levels comparable to my anthropology class where I knock out for the whole period. I wanna experience these things on my own, go into nature and jump off cliffs and sleep under the stars. Thats is what I took away from this visit.
