Freshman Seminar Fall 17 CMA

Starr workshop “Let’s get Starrted”

Last Wednesday I went to a Starr workshop. Although it was my first workshop, it was a apart of a series of workshops for first and second year Baruch students called “Let’s get Starrted”. Its aim is to familiarize students with Starr and the job search program. The workshop I attended was about resumes. They gave out packets about the resume format and talked about key points all resumes should have. Because I am apart of Baruch’s women in business, it’s necessary for me to get my resume checked for me to meet the club’s requirements. I learned about how easy it is to get your resume checked at Starr. After going to that workshop, I updated my resume and then that Thursday went to get my resume checked at Starr. At first, I didn’t really think that my resume needed many revisions but after going to Starr I realized that there was more I could do with my resume. Overall it was very helpful and it was an informative experience.

Start up Tech Fair

It was November 16, 2017 and I finished class and had nothing to do during club hours. After 9:55 AM math class, I grabbed a sandwich. I decided to just sit in the library and hang with friends. Suddenly, I remembered I needed something for my FRO Blog for the career section. My friends and I decided to hit up a “Start-Up Tech Fair” that was sponsored by Hillel at Baruch. This event took place in the Baruch Multipurpose Room. This was an excellent opportunity to network with individuals and obtain some knowledge on popular NYC Start-Ups. There were many employees from different start-up companies such as OCC, Frist Lex Capital, etc. At the end some girl won a prize which was an Amazon Echo, a great Bluetooth device. Bonus they saved me a trip to Staples and gave out a free folder.

Major and Minor fair

I went to the Majors and Minors fair and I learned a lot there that is going to help me for my major in the future. I am still currently between finance and accounting and it is very difficult for me to choose which one that I want to choose. After going to this fair I got great information on both of these majors and nowI have more knowledge on both of these majors. I still do not know which one I want to pick, but going to this fair opened my eyes and made me think about different things for my future when I get out of college. There are going to be different job opportunities depending on which one I pick.

Major and Minors Fair

For the careers workshop, I went to the major and minors fair. I found it to be pretty interesting and useful. I went over to the accounting major and listened in on what she was saying. The information I gathered from that will hopefully benefit me in the future. I also grabbed the paper for accounting majors that shows what classes are required for zicklin and the major itself. Following that, I was given a little survey to fill out and give back to the people on if the fair was helpful, which it was, and if I’ll be changing my major, which I won’t. Finally, Justin and I took a pic with the bearcat because why not make that our selfie.

Whitney museum

Today I went to the Whitney Museum and my experience was very interesting. The price to get into the museum was free because of Baruch so that was cool. The first thing I noticed was the big statue that was on some sort of chord hanging down the staircase which was pretty weird. however, I really enjoyed the vast variety the museum had ranging from pictures to articles to hand built pieces. that was very cool to see how different artists can really be.

Most of the art I saw there really didn’t remind me of art so to speak, it seemed as though some things were much more elaborate than others. they had a cool painting of a cheetah, along with a piece containing all different bike wheels from all different centuries which was very cool. The one piece of art that stood out was the moose head that was blue and black with what seemed to be one horn and a type of pipe you would find under your sink as the other horn. Along with an array of random things all placed together to form art. however, I liked how they left really no descriptions so it was up to you to form your own view of what the piece meant or what it was. Overall I enjoyed getting to learn about all the different types of art there were, along with how some artists interpret things differently than others.

Blog post

During the first weeks of the semester, my friend who is international students just like me went an international event with me. It was an event that welcomes the international students to study in New York. During the event,  there were consular officers did a speech before the event was starting. During the speech, the consular officer’s talks about the interesting things happened to them when they first came to study abroad just like us. There are many international students came to this event, not just the students from Baruch bust also the students from other universities. The event provided the food and drinks for students. All the students wear formally.  The event is helping students to network with each international students so we can help each other.  I had a great time at this international education event.

Start Up Tech Fair Career Post

Today I went to the start up tech fair in the multi-purpose room in the Vertical campus. The event started off with great food and interesting companies. After I got food, I sat down to listen to what the panel had to say. Most of the panel members were founders or important people that worked for their respective start ups. Almost all of the start ups we’re based in Israel but they had expanded to New York for a new client base. The panel was very informative because they talked about advice they wished they had in college and also what it means to be an entrepreneur. One of the panel members said that for him, school was irrelevant and if you really want to succeed, you need to gain skills in business and really work hard. Hard work was one of the things that all the panel members mentioned and dedication is also very important for success. When the panel host asked them how the feeling of failure felt, they all responded in similar ways. Almost all of them said that they have the feeling of failure everyday. In order to succeed you have to accept the fact that you will fail along the way.

This event taught me a lot about what I might want to do in the future. The panel said that you have to explore different things in order to find something you are passionate about. Most of them agreed that coding is a very important skill to learn so I will try to get started with the basics. I wasn’t on planning on talking to the panel members because I didn’t have my resume but they all seemed to say that if you really want a job, you have to show your best self and make sure you act the way you say you do.

Wall Street Careers Panel

This Thursday afternoon, I attended a Starr Career Workshop; in which a group of businessmen and women came to Baruch who currently work on wall street to discuss their backgrounds, development, and overall journey from when they were at Baruch to where they are now. This was a great experience to learn first hand advise form those who were in my shoes only a couple of years ago. They all had very unique backgrounds that showed no matter where you are from or what the circumstances might be, one can still prosper.

Darren Smith, one of the panelists started working from the age of 17 at a ups shop, delivering packages along with moving back and forth from Florida. he was a part-time student and had very little money to even attend school, yet pursued an education in finance at the age of 21 (when he came to Baruch) and now runs his own firm called Smith and Henzy that deals with financing home loans and private equity (multi-family credit bonds I believe, that meaning one of many takes he does as CEO of his company). It also really shined light upon what advantages Baruch has and what clubs helped the panelist purse their dream jobs in a very demanding and competitive field.

WST meeting

I went to an activity last week. This meeting is about those employees, who are already working in the finance fields, come to share experiences about how they get the jobs and give us some right knowledge regarding the career.

The meeting was interesting, the managers bring us some food and water. during the meeting, he told us that the job may not be the same as your major. He also pointed out that we should get more internships in the summer and try to network early. The students who are come to this meeting are trying to find the strategies that can help them find a job.  although finding jobs seem far from me, it is better for me to familiar with the process early.

The meeting was not longer than 2 hours. In the end, he picked someone to help them set up a special plan for their jobs. This is a great activity.

Starr Career Development Center

So I visited the Starr Career Development Center a while back and I wanted them to look over my resume and to give me some pointers. However, they told me that it needed some more revision and to go back another day. So I went back another day and got a walk-in 15 min appointment. It was really easy and they had walk-in available hours that are extremely flexible. They gave me pointers on my resume like line spacing, context, and resume structure. They gave constructive feedbacks and were really nice. I would definitely go back again to get my resume fixed. Overall it was a really nice experience as a freshman at Baruch and a really nice resource to go to if you need help with anything career-related. Definitely a gem and a perk of being a Baruch student.
