On October 19th, 2017, I attended a workshop, which gave by Vadim and Sergei Revzin. This workshop explained the concept of start-ups and gave us some suggestion on how to get a job at a start-ups company. Vadim and Sergei shared lots of personal experiences with the audience. And gave the audience a lot of useful advice about getting jobs. I was so glad that I went to this workshop. It’s such a great experience!
Internship Seminar
Today I went to the Internship Seminar in Room 2-190 on the Vertical Campus. It was actually really helpful. Michael Kalish, who was the presenter, taught us about the different kinds of internships and how to get one. What I found especially helpful was when he spoke about how to make a resume and what to put and what not to put on a resume. He gave some points on what looks good and acceptable and professional. He pointed out to us what kind of words we should use to build our resume and that we should try for our resume to be only one page. He said that extra curriculars would be important on a resume now, especially if you don’t have a lot of working experience. He also went over how to interview with an employer, and what to say to help ourselves stand out in a good way. Michael also gave pointers on what not to say during interviews. For example, he said that when an interviewer asks for our greatest weakness, then we should actually say a weakness and how we’re working on it, rather than say a weakness that’s really a strength. He also gave a heads up on what employers might ask to knock us off our game by asking a question whose answer we probably didn’t rehearse. At the end of the seminar Michael shared some resources that we could use to help us with the resume and finding internships and finding information about companies. This seminar was really helpful to me. There was a lot of useful information and it provided a lot of clarity for me.
Club fair
For my second blog post I had visited a club fair in the main gym of Baruch. My roommate and I decided we would like to join a club in order to get more involved in school activities and also meet new people and share ideas and such with them. I had not realized how many clubs there were before going to this meeting. I had walked around for a few minuets was giving a couple free refreshments and cookies and was even offered free pizza however, I deferred. I had seen many clubs for people of certain ethnicities and nationalities and also clubs for people with similar interest and goals. I had found myself interested in three clubs. The republican club, this is because I have republican views on politics and also I would love to debate liberals and roast them. The accounting f society was a club that had been very interesting to me not only because it would look like a good club for a resume but I am also very interested in learning about the fundamentals of accounting and how it works and what makes it work. The last club I was interested was the archery club. They had these massive bows and arrows which I found so amusing and I wanted to learn how to shoot one. The club fair was a very good event however next time they should lower the music because I could not hear much of what the club leaders were trying to explain to me about their club, which was unfortunate. However, the club fair was a great time and I was able to scout which clubs I would like to join and which I would not. Clubs are a great way to make more and new friends and also a way to share ideas that may make the school a better place.
Spoon Baruch club
On Thursday, I went to a general interest meeting for Spoon University at Baruch College. I was interested in going to the meeting because of the fact that there would be free food and also because the premise behind the club was interesting. When I entered, the representative from the club was introducing the different elements of the club and all the different jobs members of the club have. Some people do photography, some do marketing, and some do writing. The meeting was interesting because it reminded me of the type of work Buzzfeed and other media groups create. The representative even mentioned that some alumni that used to be a part of the group now work at Buzzfeed, The New York Times, etc. I would want to join this club because I love food and it would be awesome to write and take photographs of all the different types of food the city has to offer. The people who run the club also seem to love food so it would be cool to see their recommendations for food around the city and to work along side them. One thing I would like to see from the club would be cooking lessons or workshops where they teach people how to cook different dishes. Overall, the club seemed really interesting.
The Met
I went to the Met for the third time this Sunday and it is still such a wonder. It was nostalgic because I went for the first time four years ago as a freshman in high school, and now I’m a freshman in college. I got lost again and had to find my way to a map just like I did four years ago. I enjoyed walking around and looking at the paintings, but the creaky wooden floor sounds annoyed me so much. I sat on the benches and just looked around. Then, I went down to the first floor and explored the statues area.
My Visit to the MET
This was not my first time coming to the MET but it was certainly my first time as a college student. I believe I have grown an appreciation for the arts as I grew older, when I was younger I was mostly interested in the intricacy that a work of art needed. To me back then art was more about skill in the sense of portraying an image, now its more about how that intricacy can be used to evoke emotion, which to me is the true purpose of what art boils down to. Additionally as I grew older I grew a greater appreciation to the more “simpler” arts such as abstract art like Rothko’s which can easily entrap me into it pondering life and getting specific emotions which he intended for the audience to feel. Often lost in thought when I look at Rothko I can not help but get completely absorbed and come out much more calmer and relaxed. In the picture I was looking at ancient Egyptian works of art and I just constantly dozed off thinking about how it was used thousands of years ago as an everyday item. Also I saw models of older homes and envisioned life in those situations and I enjoy going to the museum because it can open up your eyes to the many things that we take for granted if you are not in the contemporary art section. Combined with the weapons and tools the hieroglyphics took up most my time at the museum as I spent multiple minutes trying to mimic archaeologist and tried deciphering the writing, but much to my effort I was met with no real progress but I was able to recognize a few images here and there. All in all I look forward to utilizing my student ID to go to the museum and hopefully use it for classes again as I did in High school, not just to kill time.
Public Speaking Workshop
Justin and I went to a workshop on public speaking hosted by the Sigma Alpha Delta honor society. Dr. Minei gave a presentation on The V’s of Self-Presentation. She discussed the topics of verbal, visual, and vocal. All of which she explained how to present ourselves in situations such as family gatherings, presentations, interviews, etc. For example, verbally which words to use and not to use, and understanding difference in culture because areas of the U.S. use words differently. Visually, how to appear. Like how to dress and how your posture should be, how to give a proper handshake. Vocally, how to speak in terms of tone and hand gestures. She ended with a segment called “developing your toolbox” which are like motivational things to make us most comfortable before we present something. Self-care, Backstage Ritual, Posture, Express Success, Dress for you, Using props wisely, and Proofread your look were the sections. Throughout the workshop, she had us do group activities and all the people knew each other because they’re in the society but I’m not, so I was talking to several new people and the workshop was helping me do it comfortably. This workshop immediately helped me with my public speaking and will help me in the future. I’m not the most open person and I don’t enjoy presentations so the tips she gave will help me get a job in the future, help me with future presentations, and even with family occasions.
MetLife Event-Blog
last week, I took part a Metlife Event presentation about their internship and full-time programs to their clubs, as well as collect resumes from, and recruit, their numbers.
At the first, they just let us have pizzas and then start the speech.During their presentations, they made a speech about their clubs and what their jobs like. The most interesting part is the questioning part. Students were asking them how it was like to work in the Metlife. The employees were talking to students about what they learned during the internship and the most interesting part of their jobs. Then the employees talked about their programs that suit for students. They mentioned some requirements to the students.
The students were all wearing the formal suits and some of them were also bring the resumes. It was really fun to take part in such activity because students can learn the things about a different career experience which help them better define them.
MoMA
Last Saturday me and my friend, Calvin, decided to go to the Mo MA together. There were a lot of pieces that seemed extremely simple to me, but after discussing them with my friend I realized that the same simple pieces can be interpreted to have a greater meaning. There were many moments when I felt it necessary to read the description about the art piece. Sometimes these small blurbs gave an insight that couldn’t have been found even after discussing the art piece. I especially liked the last level which displayed a history of fashion. One piece we thought was extremely interesting was of a hanging durag. It was entitled “Do-rag” which made both of us laugh because they misnamed the clothing item. At first, I thought maybe I was just spelling it wrong, but after talking to Calvin, an African American male who actually wears a durag, it was confirmed that they spelled it wrong. I also enjoyed the sculpture of the huge spider.
study abroad @ baruch
Hello!
So I had one day free, it was a Tuesday or something, and I thought to myself “hm… what is there to do around here?” After walking into Vertical Campus I found out that there was a study abroad fair going on. I was shook and therefore proceeded to the event. I always wondered what it was like studying abroad for a semester in Paris. When I made it into the fair, there were so many countries and schools that were being represented. It seemed as though I could throw a dart on a map and there was a study abroad opportunity! I made my way to the Dauphin University, named after Louis XV (the Dauphin Prince), and started talking to a few representatives. I spent over an hour with them just talking about life in New York and life in Paris. It was great! I had lots of fun discussing how New York may have the best pizza but without a doubt Paris had the best baguettes and croissants. I made a few new friends during this discussion as well.
Merci Melanie and Lucien!
