Freshman Seminar Fall 17 CMA

Self Presentation

I went to a workshop with Chris called The V’s of self presentation. At this workshop we learned many things that are going to help us in the future especially during interviews. We learned the best ways to present ourselves no matter where we are and it was a great experience. We learned todo this in a visual way and a vocal way as well. Presenting yourself is everything especially when going on a interview to try and get the job you want. With this workshop it helped me feel more confident when having to meet with someone for an interview. It helped us to prepare for the future and I am now a lot more confident getting ready to go on more interviews. This will hopefully will help me to succeed in getting the job of my dreams.

Museum Visit – Adam Tarin

I decided to take a trip to the American Museum of Natural History. Surprisingly, the last time I went to the Natural History Museum was when I was a young child. I was never really into Museums as a kid because they kinda creeped me out. Those sculptures and figures always freaked me out as a kid. But now I returned to the Natural History Museum and It was actually really cool. The exhibits were interesting and I actually liked just walking around Museums because they are so clean and quiet. Not to mention that their bathrooms are really nice too.

I felt like Ben Stiller in the Night of the Museum as I walked through the historical exhibits. I did stay away from much of the animal exhibits because they still freak me out. Even though many people go to the Natural History Museum because of the dinosaurs. I tend to enjoy checking out the more historical stuff.  My favorite exhibit to go look at was of course the mummy exhibit. Growing up watching movies like Indiana Jones and playing video games like Uncharted has made me always love old stuff especially when they old stuff has a bunch of interesting stories about it.

This trip has added to my experience here at Baruch as it introduced me to the available amenities of going to a college here in New York. Baruch being placed in Manhattan has enhanced my education experience during my first semester here at Baruch. The ability to take the topics learned in lecture and apply it to the real world is my favorite thing about Baruch. I can learn about classical music in my music class and then go to the MET and see the same classical songs being played by the New York Philharmonic.

MoMA

After classes, my friends and I decided to go to the Museum of Modern Art. Since we only had one hour until closing, we went straight up to the limited time exhibit called “Items: Is Fashion Modern?”. The exhibit showed many types of clothes and accessories. We saw clothes that one would normally see on a daily basis and other clothes which are more interesting and you probably won’t see outside. Some of the clothes came from different cultural backgrounds like the qipao down below.

Since we had a bit of time left, we went down to painting gallery. We walked around and saw many colorful paintings like Monet’s Water Lilies and Robert Delaunay’s Simultaneous Contrasts: Sun and Moon.

A day at the MOMA

For this fro post we decided to head to MOMA the Museum of Modern Art. We had a great experience there but the history of fashion and painting grabbed my attention the most. As you can see from the pictures below the museum showed all different kind of clothing that was popular at a certain time,We also saw clothing from all different culture. The one that I loved the most would be the cheongsam since it represents the culture I came from.It was amazing to see how the sense of fashion has changed throughout time and We And the floor under is the floor for painting, there we saw a lot of amazing painting from all different kind of artists and it’s really amazing to see how they mix and match the colors up. You get all different kind of opinions on just one painting and I think that’s the magic of painting is that people see different stories behind it depending on themselves. If you look closely you will notice that in one of the pictures there’s a shadow with five people, it’s actually me and my friends standing in front of the painting. Even though we only had time to explore those two floors it was a pleasure being able to be there with my friends, and on that note my first time at MOMA was amazing.

Visiting the MoMA

On Wednesday, Oct. 25, my friends and I decided to go visit the Museum of Modern Art. I’ve been there once during my freshman year of high school for an art project, but I mainly just looked at the paintings. This time, we checked out the special exhibit, which was “Items: Is Fashion Modern?”. The exhibit featured many pieces of clothing such as dresses, shirts, shoes, bags, etc. Some were more unique and you normally wouldn’t see on the streets, but were others more familiar pieces of clothing. It was interesting to see clothing displayed as art because we wouldn’t normally think about it in such a way in our everyday lives.

After the fashion exhibit, we went to the painting gallery. I saw many paintings that I remembered from the first time I went, such Monet’s Water Lilies and Van Gogh’s Starry Night. However, we didn’t have much time to explore the paintings because it was almost time for the museum to close, but it was still fun seeing all the familiar paintings.

Taking a friend’s Advice (Adam) and Going to PFN

On Thursday the 26th, I had the realization that I needed to go do something, but I didn’t know what. After hours of wandering, pondering, and searching for the answer, I finally remembered. I had to go somewhere Baruch related and write about it in this blog. So what did I do? I called up my friend Adam and asked him, “Hey, could I go to PFN (Pre-Recorded Friday Night) with you today?” He replied, “Yeah.” I rudely ended the call and ran there. I arrived and I was shocked. There were three people there (him and two other members). So it turned out that this day they don’t do much and all the other members are caught up with their midterms. So I decided to inquire about the club. Essentially, I learned that they make and produce original sketches, videos, and other video media, aimed at getting a laugh. I watched their previous productions and found myself very entertained. I also got to observe their idea making process for videos, which intrigued me greatly. I used to do something along these lines when I was in high school, which is why I found it easy to like. We ended the meeting by watching other works of visual media.

In terms of Baruch, this experience taught me that there are so many resources here that I haven’t utilized and that there is so much diversity within the community and school. I plan on continuing to go to this club and probably joining others. For the last few months, I’ve been neglecting clubs and going to the library to work. But, after going to this one I’m gonna start getting more involved, for this was a very fun experience. Now I need to go to something else for the next blog post. Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you for your time.

The New Museum

Since I ended class pretty late, it was really hard for me to find a museum that opened late. I searched online and found this museum that seemed very interesting. Upon arriving, I noticed a HUGE line around the museum. That sparked my interests even more.  It was a pay-by-what-you-wish fee with all donations going to charity. There were around 7 floors to this museum. I was very intrigued by the artworks and videos. Some of the exhibits were about transvestites and how they should be recognized. It was a whole new world for me. There was this artwork that said “gender>genitals” which was really inspiring. As i walked from the first floor all the way to the seventh floor, many of the artworks were confusing. Maybe i just didn’t understand art. But the videos that were showcased about different transvestites were very interesting.

Museum of Natural History

What is there to do when your college is closed and you have no classes? It was Thursday September 21, 2017 and there were no classes thanks to the Jewish Holiday, Rosh Hashanah. Some people spent this day celebrating, while other caught up on sleep. Sleep sounded ideal to me but I decided to go and visit the Museum of Natural History. I texted some friends and we went to the Museum and made a day of it.

Arriving around 1PM, we had five hours to look around. We first went to the space exhibition, followed by the Hall of Biodiversity, North American and African Mammals, and then lastly the reptiles and amphibians. We then ate some street food and walked around. After we left the Museum, one of my friends suggested that we watch the movie “It.” We went to a late-night show and saw the movie and I liked it.

Student Life

I got an email from my seminar’s mentor last week. The introduction of the Latinx Heritage Month event seems very interesting. I thought this might be a good opportunity to explore something new, so I went to the event. This event took place in the lobby of the Vertical building. When I walked into the building,  I saw a lot of Latin America countries’  flags hanging up there. People there were talking with friends and took pictures. People also provide free food and gave out some free t-shirts during the event.  I would like to try the ice-lolly, but  I didn’t have any of them. I was surprised that the lolly was gone so fast. The music chair game was so funny to watch, too. They played so many Latin America’s song, but”Vivir mi Vida” was the only song that I know. I had a lot of fun with my friends on that day.

SACC

I attended SACC, peer tutoring for calculus 2207. I had to go to SACC due to the holidays falling on school days, I was forced to miss class. I went to the tutoring center and I met with the tutor named Ibrahima. He was very helpful. I asked him a few calculator questions regarding the TI89. I spoke to my professor and informed her that I would missing again due to the second part of the holiday. Upon informing her, I also asked her what we would be learning and what I would be missing so I can make it up either beforehand or after hand. Luckily, Ibrahima taught me how to use the calculator and the methods needed for the exam on October 17.

SACC is a great place to get help in! Whether your struggling or just want to catch up on your work, SACC will help you! SACC’s mission is to help the students of Baruch College to succeed academically and in their chosen professions by helping them throughout their college careers in order to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for future success. In this case, SACC has completed their mission with me.

I will definitely go back for more aid! I am excited to go back in the future!
