Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC12

Beta Alpha Psi

Last Thursday, September 7th, a group of friends and I met outside Baruch during the club hours and attempted to decide which club GIM we should attend. After considering multiple clubs such as UNICEF, BAP, and USG, we decided to attend the Beta Alpha Psi GIM because we were all interested in what the club had to offer. At the club we were greeted with complimentary pizza and refreshments (always a nice touch) and then proceeded to sit and watch a video about what the club had to offer. Although the video provided newcomers with information on what the club does on a regular basis, I found the speakers much more informative and compelling. Max, one of the Rush members, went on to tell us about the three main sectors of the business honors fraternity: brotherhood, community service, and professionalism.

In terms of brotherhood the speakers expanded on the idea that joining the club would give us the opportunity to create tight bonds and make life long friends with all the current and future members of the club. Community Service was introduced from a very grateful point of view, all the members wanted to show that they were thankful for the opportunities that they were presented with by giving back and making an impact on their community. Lastly, the members spoke of professionalism, perhaps their largest sector. All 20 members in the room continued to tell us about their individual experiences in terms of BAP helping them find internships and then prepare them for it. Additionally the members conveyed to us the importance of networking in the business world and how many doors BAP can open for us in that particular field.

I think that BAP has a great deal to offer to students perusing majors in the business, accounting, and CIS felid, however, I personally think that I would be able to take more out of the club if I were to join either next semester or the first semester of my sophomore year.

Beta Alpha Psi: A basic Fraternity? or A lifetime of oppurtunity?

A group of freshman, confused and excited to finally attend our first GIM Meeting. A last minute decision led us to test the waters of fraternity “Beta Alpha Psi”. Thoughts of huge frat parties and crazy intiation stories  flooded my mind, but as soon as I stepped into the room those thoughts quickly diminished. The first thing I noticed was the professional setting the society provided. The main speakers wearing full suits, each gave the audience the impression of a polished, proficient work ethic. As the meeting continued to progress, the more astonished I got by the white-collar atmosphere this “frat” bestowed.  If I learned one thing from this General Interest Meeting, it’s that BAP is a model to all young adults looking to solidify a legacy in Baruch. Successful individuals have a template to achieve their precarious goals, and a group of motivational people to support them through the entire experience. BAP takes you in and branches you out into a family that humbly calls you a brother/sister, preparing you to be the best version of yourself. I may not be a part of the huge diverse BAP family this year, but this one GIM completely changed my biased understanding of fraternities, influenced me to explore my options, and ultimately helped me learn to strive to be only the best version of me.

Student Life in Baruch College

For the past two Thursdays, I went to a club GIM called UCLA (United Chinese Language Association). I was instantly surprised by the amount of people who went to this GIM as seen in the pictures above. I never expect a club meeting to have so many people. A lot of people had to sit on the floor or stand for the entire time including me. The club meeting started by the introduction of the club and its board members. While introducing the meaning and objective of the club, I start to realize that this club isn’t just where Asians gather together. It’s about spreading and learning about the Chinese culture regardless of ethnicity. It made me more interested in the club.

Then we started to play several games and people started to get very excited. Due to the large amount of people, it was difficult to have everyone involved, but it was still very fun to watch the participants competing each other. The board members were also very energetic and nice to talk to. The food arrived and the people got even more excited. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the food because there was absolutely way too much people waiting in line. As a matter of fact, the picture above shows how I’m trying to get through all those people to get food. In all, the club GIM certainly caught my interest to continue attending future meetings.

UCLA GIM#2

Last week, on Thursday, Sept. 7, I went to the UCLA’s (United Chinese Language Association) 2nd general interest meeting. While I was there, I thought it was very fun to participate in the games and meet new people who have similar interests as me. The people that run the club also are very great. When I asked them questions about the club, majors, and other things in general about Baruch, they answered me with helpful information of what I should expect from being a student here. Some of the people I met at UCLA were Katie and Alexis, who are in the picture with me. I discovered that they both are majoring in accounting just like me, and we discussed ours thoughts on that and how we are planning to pass our classes. Alexis, who currently is a junior at Baruch, talked to us and gave us an idea of how difficult can majoring in accounting can be, but that didn’t change my mind on what I want to do in the future.

Even though in the beginning my main reason for going there was because I wanted the food, the club in general turned out to be pretty interesting and fun that I forgot about eating for just a minute. Mind you, I was still kinda hungry, haha.

Overall, my experience there on Thursday was very enjoyable. I got to meet people that went to the same high school as me that I didn’t even know went there because I had never seen them before. We played fun games and my team won all of them (just kidding, we only won one out of two games. So sad). And also, I ate lot of food at the end, which is one of the parts I enjoyed the most that day.

The Ticker Blog

In the photo above, I am copy-editing for the college newspaper, The Ticker. My job is to check for grammar and spelling. In other words, before articles are published, they must be coherent. Before joining this club, I felt like it would be very boring. It dawned upon me that I should join a club where I would have fun. However, being eager, I decided to do something that was outside of my comfort zone. Since joining this club, I have enjoyed it and it has allowed me to form new relationships and feel a part of the Baruch community. This role makes me feel like a teacher. In addition to this, this club will enhance my reading and writing skills throughout my academic career.

Joining a club is one thing, but being involved is another. In order to become more involved, I will go to the club before and after club hours. I will contact the managers and ask them if they need my help. I will offer to write a few articles. If I am editing, and I am not sure of what a writer was trying to say, I would contact them before making any changes. Every writer has a different style and changing a phrase or two might change the meaning of the sentence or paragraph. I will attend most, if not all editorial meetings. By attending the meetings, I will know what needs to be done and what I can do to in order to become an asset for the club. I will ask my fellow classmates what they want to want to see in the newspaper and then relay those messages back to the writers. Lastly, I will ask my club members to show me new ways of doing things in an efficient manner.

Going to Baruch Accounting Society

I went to the first GIM for the Baruch Accounting Society last week. This was my third time going to one of these so I expected the natural order of these things. That is the explanation, the icebreaker games and the food.

A lot of people attended, but since we were in a big room it wasn’t overcrowded or anything. We got to mingle and get to know other people there through the icebreaker game we played. The game itself was about guessing what a zoomed up picture was. Sadly my team didn’t win, but since two teams had to play a tiebreaker maybe it wasn’t that big a deal.

The food served was pretty nice with stacks of various pizza boxes and an assortment of cookies and even had water bottles on the side. I only had one slice though since I ate beforehand.

This club seemed to be productive since it had events and meetings every Tuesdays and Thursdays. All the officers seemed very nice though it may take a while for me to remember all of their names. The club gave a feel that it was very professional. I think it’s going to be hard planning how to manage days when I should go because I have other clubs I want to join as well.

There are events I’d like to join for sure like workshops and volunteering events. The bake sales would also be fun to participate in since I like to bake when I have free time. Also I signed up to be part of the planning committee so that will be a good way to get integrated into the club.

It feels like it’d be an important experience to join this club especially since I’d be majoring in accounting. Hopefully I’ll have a fun time here.

Museum Blog

I chose to go to American Museum of Natural History, which is located near Central Park. I really don’t go to Museum often unless my friends beg me to go or it’s required for some school work, but it’s nice to go to museums sometimes  because there are a lot of things to see such as painting, sculpture, and many more thing. It was a great experience going to the American Museum of Natural History and learning about human’s origin and their migration. I learned a lot about human’s origin and their migration in high school but I never had a visual of it, by going to the museum I had a better insight of it. When I went to the museum it was almost time for closing so most of the sections were closed. I really wanted to go the Mummies exhibit but unfortunately it was close, so maybe I will go there again early to see that exhibit. It was a great experience going to the museum, I was able to spend time with my friend and was able to gain some useful knowledge. I am thinking of going to museums whenever I am stressed out, going to a museum is a great way to relive stress. I would recommend others to do the same.

First GIM

Standing outside the Newman Vertical Campus building, trying to decide with a couple of friends which club or society to join, we made a group decision to go to a business fraternity named Beta Alpha Psi. Initially I was skeptical about joining a fraternity, because I always thought that all fraternities are social organizations and there was not much I could learn from them. With in a couple minutes into the general introductory meeting I realized how wrong I was.

The rush chairs started off by showing us a video which introduced all the members of Beta Alpha Psi and the transitioned into telling us about their three basic principle namely; professionalism, community service and brotherhood. They further told us about their experiences and how Beta Alpha Psi not only helped them do good professionally, but how each of them had build a bond with one another and created a family of their own.

Listening about the fraternity and individual experiences of people in it, made me realize, their was more to fraternities than I had initially thought and more importantly, the importance of being a part of a community that not only supports you but also helps you in achieving your dreams and aspirations, with which you come into college. Even though I am not sure in which club I would best fit, I can say with certainty that Beta Alpha Psi can help me achieve my dreams and cheer me on as I go out into the world to achieve them.

Beta Alpha Psi GIM

Walking into this fraternity, I did not come expecting that within two hours I would learn a great deal about how beneficial a fraternity could be. It started off as general facts of what Beta Alpha Psi is founded on and what it stands for being as an honor society and representing brotherhood, community service, and professionalism.  They all collectively join as a brotherhood to boost each other up to the potential they hold within themselves and seek to bring out that potential in new members. They do so by sharpening their skills and doing workshops to strengthen skills needed in starting off in a job by doing mock interviews, editing resumes, and serving in their communities to build their character and remembering to stay humble.

The president spoke about how advertising around Baruch for Beta Alpha Psi lead to him meeting a fellow Baruch student who wanted to join and lacked the skills to become successful until he helped him along with the other members who now shaped him into becoming the executive vice president of Beta Alpha Psi currently. Together, all the members resembled a family because they all spend time together in becoming better versions of themselves and over years they have seen each other grow to gain success in their field because of older and younger members guiding them along the way.

At the end, the professionalism of the current members and the positions they held at top companies inspired me to join a fraternity/sorority because it made me envision myself in one of their places one day in securing a job in my desired career field while making a family in a fraternity that could potentially become like a second family to me.

MOMA Moment

I have recently gone to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) just for a quick look at what’s going on, because I’ve only went there once before and it made be feel stuff about myself. Some of the art work that I saw in the museum made me think about my life, mostly the one that are based on modern day traffic signs and other stuff falling into that category. Sometimes, after staring at the paintings and artwork for a while, I like to believe that I actually like traveling to places and having someone to share memories with sometimes, mostly my family because they practically made who I am, even if I am a bit lazy at home. Nonetheless, I’m hoping that one day my life will get much more exciting and that I’m doing it with the people that are close to me. In case no one understands what I mean, look at the photos.
