- Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin accompanies fellow astronaut Neil Armstrong [visible in Aldrin’s visor reflection]on a two and a half hour walk across the surface of the moon. The space race was a major battleground in the Cold War between the United States and the USSR. The United States emerged victorious though by successfully sending its astronauts to the moon first and ending the space race.
