Owning land is to be Truly Free

Many former slaves believed they needed land to move ahead in there social-economic status. They didn’t want to continue to work on plantations but wanted their own plantations. The freedmen insisted that without land they were no better than the times of slavery. Sherman sold forty acre plots of land to African Americans however President Johnson ordered all these lands back to their former owners. So without any land distribution to blacks remained poor and well behind in their economic status.

The failure of land distribution resulted in many blacks not being able to move up the social ladder.
