In singing this simple song of freedom, Bobby Darrin is talking to all Americans of all races. He defines freedom as realizing your dreams and being able to live your dreams without it ending up in a war. He says that presidents and those in government often want war, but we should try and stay out of it in order to maintain our own freedom. He tries to make people realize that we are all equal and we should treat each other as such.

The audience may be thinking that they too want to avoid a war, and they may be beginning to feel that we should not be discriminating against people because of their race. Moreover, in not granting the African Americans their integration, you are restricting their freedom, while the song says that freedoms should not be restricted. this song is trying to get people to realize that their treatment of the African Americans is wrong and needs to be changed before we get into another civil war.
