This song is a lot different than Elton John’s Philadelphia Freedom. Even though they both have a similar theme of freedom for their songs, the types of freedoms they sing about are different. Elton John talks about patriotism and to support the United States, but this song by The Verve is more of freedom through expressing your ideas and beliefs. It even somewhat is against the government.
“I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah”
“I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now””
” ‘Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony, this life
Try to make ends meet
You’re a slave to money then you die”
