Othello

Othello is one of William Shakespeare’s famous epic plays.  Othello is a general who is in love with Desdemona who is the daughter of Brabanzio.  Iago and Roderigo cries out to Brabanzio, telling him that Othello has stolen Desdemona away from Brabanzio and has married her secretly.  Brabanzio is enraged and seeks to find Othello and tell him off.  Othello soon caught, admits that him and Desdemona are madly in love together and that he has not stolen Desdemona away with witchcraft and the marriage was not one sided.  Othello also brings up that Brabanzio treated Othello like a son before he knew about Othello’s relationship with Desdemona but once Brabanzio found out about their relationship, he has treated Othello with utter disrespect just because Othello was black.  I found watching Othello a lot easier to understand than reading the text because the text itself is very complicated and watching the scenes as the characters talk are a lot easier to understand.  I am able to see their emotions and watching their actions helps me comprehend the scene more clearly and vividly.  Watching the scene where Brabanzio tries to accuse Othello for witchcraft stood out to me because Brabanzio did not treat Othello with disrespect before he found out Othello was married to his daughter.  Brabanzio’s actions were only done because of Othello’s skin color.  Brabanzio does not accept that fact that his daughter has married a black man which was very significant to me.

Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk, who was two-thirds god and one-third man.  He built magnificent structures like temple towers and ziggurats that surrounded his city with high walls.  He was physically beautiful, fiercely strong, and very wise.  Even though Gilgamesh was god-like in mind and body, his desires were still human-like.  He started his kingship by raping any woman who attracted him physically and emotionally disregarding if they were single, wives of his warriors, or even daughters of the noblemen.  He did not care because he felt as if he had to be every women sexually whenever he wants to even though he did not get permission.  The epic begins with the birth of Enkidu who first lives his life like an animal.  Soon with the help of a hunter and a temple prostitute, Enkidu learns the characteristics of a man and becomes part of the human world.  Enkidu becomes enraged when he hears about Gilgamesh and wants to encounter Gilgamesh and challenge him.  Once Enkidu and Gilgamesh meet, they have an epic battle for a long time but soon becomes very close friends.  Gilgamesh and Enkidu both seek adventures together and they set out on a journey together.  The scene where Enkidu dies was very emotional because Gilgamesh’s cry for Enkidu is very touching.  Gilgamesh loses his close companion who shared many adventures with him.  Gilgamesh becomes heartbroken and tries to make up for the death of his best friend.  Gilgamesh becomes worried that his life may come to an end and attempts to find immortality.  Gilgamesh fails to find it but realizes the importance of life which is very meaningful.

Ramayana

The story of Ramayana is about a young handsome prince name Rama and his beautiful wife, Sita.  King Dashratha has three wives and four sons.  The eldest son, was the one and only Prince Rama who was known for his outlook and idealist values.  Rama was considered to be the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu.  King Dashratha decides to give Rama the rights to the throne and crown him king as Rama was the righful heir to the throne.  However, King Dashratha’s second wife became jealous and envied Rama and wanted her son to be crown the king after Dashratha.  She reminded the king of a promise he made to her a while back and made him crown her son as the next king.  Soon after, Rama was exiled for 14 years and his wife Sita stayed by his side and joined him on his journey.  Rama obeyed his father and bid farewell to the kingdom and his father.  I respect the fact that even though Rama was exiled out of the kingdom and was not able to claim his rights to the throne, he still respected his father’s decision, even though the decision did not seem fair.  Rama was a very faithful son and these traits of Rama fulfill the qualities of a true king.

Beowulf

Beowulf is an epic story about a young, brave warrior who fights demons.  The story starts off with the kingdom of King Hrothgar.  The demon Grendel becomes enraged with hearing loud noise coming from the kingdom and starts attacking and torturing the citizens every night for many years.  Beowulf who hears about this demon, Grendel, is determined to come to King Hrothgar’s kingdom to help slay this demon.  To show his courage and power, Beowulf fights Grendel unarmed as Grendel approaches Beowulf and the kingdom.  Beowulf rips off Grendel’s arm as Grendel tries to get away and slays him.  Beowulf hangs up the severed arm in the mead-hall as a trophy for his victory.  Beowulf’s victory leads to a big feast where he is showered with gifts and treasures.  Everyone praises and thanks Beowulf for defeating Grendel.  Reading both Beowulf and watching the animated version of Beowulf was very interesting to read and watch.  I felt that watching the movie itself really help me understand the emotions of the fight scenes throughout the movie.  It was very interesting to see how one human being, such as Beowulf, can take on demons such as Grendel without hesitating and in the end, Beowulf defeats the demons without much effort shown.
