gilgamesh

This epic poem is about the king of Uruk, Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh is 2/3 god and 1/3 human. Gilgamesh was strong, good looking and smart. He took any women that he wanted and raped her. He forced his people to work, and wasnt loved by his people. When the gods heard of Gilgameshs wrong doings, They created Enkidu, who was supposed to be Gilgameshs equal in terms of strength and beauty. They became friends, and when Enkidu died, Gilgamesh was distraught. He had never lost someone so close to him as Enkidu was to him before. This experience makes Gilgamesh more humbe, and teaches him that no matter how strong and powerful you are, you still must be humble and treat people with resopect.

This is a very important lesson, and it is something that everyone can learn something from. No matter who you are, it does not give you the right to belittle someone, even if you are more powerful then them. Sometimes it takes a catastrophic occurrence to make one realize what life is about. Gilgamesh was put into check after Enkidu died, and them he caught all of his wrong doings.

beowolf

Beowolf is an interesting tale about a hero, Beowolf and how he defeats the great demon, Grendel. It all starts off with King Hrothgar, who is a well liked ruler. He builds a gathering place for the danes, called Heorot, where they  get together to drink, receive gifts from their lord, and listen to each others stories. The noise from Heorot causes Grendel, a demon who lives in the swamps of Hrothgar’s kingdom. Grendel attacks the Danes every night. The danes have no way of fighting back against the mighty Grendel, and so they suffer many years of fear, danger, and death at the hands of Grendel. Eventually, however, a young Geatish warrior named Beowulf hears of Hrothgar’s problem with Grendel. Inspired by the challenge, Beowulf sails to Denmark with a small army of men, determined to defeat Grendel. After an epic battle, Grendel is defeated. Grendels mother is unhappy about what took place and kills one of Hrothgars men. Beowolf avenges this murder by setting off into the swamps to kill Grendels  mother. He eventually kills her with a magic sword. When he returns he is greatly rewarded. Later, after Beowolf has aged, he hears of a mighty dragon guarding treasure, who has been causng chaos in the city. Beowolf fights this dragon, but has a hard time because he is old. he eventually defeats the dragon, but in doing so he gets mortally wounded and dies. This story is very entertaining. I enjoyed the story because it depicts the act of a hero and how he is countlessly called upon to save the nation from numerous unpleasantries. Beowolf is a strong and admirable warrior who gave his life for his people.

Medea

Medea and her husband Jason have 2 children together. Medea is deeply in love with Jason,  but the story opens with Jason leaving Medea and her 2 children in hopes of remarying the daughter of Cleon, Glause in the city of Corinth. Similar to The Ramayana, Medea is ordered to leave the city. Medea gives of vibes that make the readers pity her. Medea crumbles to pieces and goes insane. She now hates her life, aswell as her 2 children, who only seem to remind her of Jason. Before leaving the city, she plans on taking revenge on Jason in a crazy way.  Medea is granted 1 last day in the city, and on this day she kills Jasons new wife and the 2 children that they had together in front of Jasons eyes. This scene is very gruesome and shocking, aswell, considering how sorry I felt for Medea in the beginning of the story. This tragedy depicts a scene in which revenge is the most important thing for Medea, even more then her own children. Medea only can find peace with herself if she supplants her revenge on Jason. After she does go through with her plan of revenge, she is satisfied.

Ramayana

The Ramayana is a story about a strong wise prince and his beautiful wife, Sita. Rama was due to become the king, but was instead banished because of a promise that the king had to keep to his wife, Kaikeyi, who wanted her favorite son, Bharata to become the next king. So Rama was sent into exile in the forest for fourteen years. Sita, Ramas wife, accompanies Rama into he forest. They live a happy and simple life in the forest, until one day Sita gets abducted by King Ravana, the king of Lanka. Rama sets out to recapture his beloved wife Sita. Ravana likes Sita and wants to be with her, but all Sita cares about is Rama. Rama eventually fins King Ravana and Sita, and he defeats the King and recaptures his wife. When Rama finds out that Ravana caused Sita to be unpure, he no longer wants to be with Sita, even though he went through all of that trouble to save her. Sita undergoes tests of purity and passs, but they do not matter to Rama and Sita leaves. This story is very gripping and interesting. It shows the love that two people shared and how it all was lost.
