After many of us have spent time socially distanced and virtual, how do we navigate varying comfort levels in the on-campus classroom? What are things we can do to create a classroom and learning environment that is flexible and welcoming when so many norms about sharing the same space are in flux? How do we talk with students about classroom norms during these times? Join this CTL conversation to brainstorm, listen to, and talk about your and your colleagues’ experiences.

You may have seen or heard about new guidance from the university about having students on camera during live class sessions. Simply summarized, faculty may not require students to turn on their cameras, they must obtain consent from students to be recorded, and they must inform students of these things both in the syllabus and in person. In this conversation, we will have an open discussion about how to meet the requirements in a way that aligns with your course goals. We welcome your experiences and the strategies you’ve used to make your class sessions more active and student-centered, with or without cameras on.

In this conversation session, we’ll talk about asking students to write reflections—alongside assignments or generally about the course. Having students reflect on their experience of learning concepts or completing assignments can help us understand how they’re navigating our courses. They can also help with our assessment models for assignments, projects, and examinations. Moderated by Seth Graves and Tamara Gubernat
