Justice Pedagogy

What do we mean by justice pedagogy?

The Center for Teaching and Learning creates and promotes opportunities for faculty at Baruch to build equity and equality in the classroom.  Through research, workshops, and one-on-one faculty consultations, we are especially committed to:

  • Promoting inclusive and / or critical pedagogy that centers diverse student identities.
  • Focusing on the teaching and learning context specifically.
  • Focusing on approaches that encourage faculty reflection on their own practices.
  • Helping faculty to create a classroom community that supports and prepares students to interrogate structures of inequality.

Please Take a Moment and Reflect:

Identifying Your Own Attitudes

Resources at Baruch

Coalition to Undo Racism at Baruch (CURB)

The Baruch “Coalition to Undo Racism at Baruch” is a monthly meeting for administrators, faculty and staff who have attended the Undoing Racism Workshop and wish to continue connecting about the workshop and anti-racist work on campus.  Currently, the meetings are on the 2nd Friday of the month, 12:00-1:00.  The location varies.  For more information, please contact Bill Ferns at [email protected].

Urban Male Leadership Academy (UMLA)

The Urban Male Leadership Academy at Baruch (UMLA) “aims to empower and support young men of color, with a focus on Black and Latino male students, through rigorous academic and personal support over the course of their college careers.  UMLA is funded through the CUNY Black Male Initiative (BMI), which has strived to increase enrollment rates of African American young men in CUNY schools since 2004.”  For more information, please contact Andrew Lawton at [email protected]

Schwartz Center Inclusive Pedagogy Workshop

Since 2017, the Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute has held an inclusive pedagogy seminar for faculty of the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs.  Faculty fellows have produced a variety of resources for the Baruch community on this topic, which can be located here.   For more information about upcoming seminars, please contact the Schwartz Center at [email protected].

Research at Baruch

Center for Teaching and Learning staff members Alfred Waller and Lindsey Albracht conducted research with faculty across the CUNY system who were participating in a variety of initiatives surrounding the engagement of justice pedagogies within their classrooms.  Here is a link to their presentation entitled “How Do Faculty Discuss Justice Pedagogies with Peers?: Program Models Across CUNY.”

Resources @ CUNY and NYC

Undoing Racism Workshop

The Undoing Racism workshop assists individuals, communities, and institutions with identifying and undoing the causes of racism. Through dialogue, reflection, role-playing, strategic planning and presentations, this intensive process challenges participants to analyze the structures of power and privilege that hinder social equity and prepares them to be effective organizers for justice.

CUNY Faculty Dialogues

Led by experts in the field, CUNY Faculty Diversity Dialogues are forums for CUNY administration, staff, and faculty to build awareness around a range of issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  For more information about upcoming Faculty Diversity Dialogues programming, visit this link.

Socially Conscious Pedagogy Zine

Graduate student teaching fellows at the Graduate Center, CUNY developed this zine featuring interdisciplinary assignment ideas that are responsive to naming and challenging marginalization and oppression.  The zine is part of a larger focus group on developing a socially conscious pedagogy, which the Baruch Center for Teaching and Learning profiles in our research on program models that engage justice pedagogies across the CUNY system.
