Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DTC

blog1

On the first session of the Hillel club which I went to, we started off with eating different types of food and following that we were introduced to what the Hillel club was about by Ilya Bratman and he gave us a very entertaining story about his involvment in the Iraq war in 2004. He started off with giving us basic information of the Iraq war and during this brief introduction, he showed us pictures of soldiers and combat during the war. He told us an interesting story of when he was in a plane and it looked like it was about to crash, which lead him to evaluate his life and life decisions overall, which lead him to overthink almost every aspect of his life, from the smallest things to his overall lifes purpose as he thought he was about to die in a plane crash, luckily, he survived and looked to seek a new career path away from the military. Since Hilel is mainly a Jewish club, he introduced us to the Jewish New Year of Rosh Hashanah and gave us information about it, like how to celebrate it and what to wear and what to do.
It was very entertaining overall and I definetly will go to more events provided by Hillel club.

UPD: I’m going to attach a photo of myself later, my phone is broken right now.

Club Fair

There was a club fair a few weeks ago. At first, I was hesitant to go because I knew which club I wanted to join, the Chinese Christian Fellowship, however I thought I would be missing out on a big opportunity to find that one special club, so I decided to give it a go. Prior to the fair, I sat alone in a random classroom contemplating whether or not I should actually go because although it may not be a big deal to others, the thought of going alone into a place with so many people made me anxious. When it was finally 12:30 PM, I made my way down to the main gym. There were so many clubs around, I did not even know where to start so I just walked around in a circle a few times before I made my way towards the United Chinese Language Association club. I find this club interesting because they have a Chinese learning program, which I want to join because my Chinese is not really good. This club seems cool because although you get to learn a lot through their programs and mentorships, there is also a lot of fun. For instance, they will be having a big Moon Festival celebration soon. Overall, I am glad I took the time to visit the club fair because I got to see the variety of clubs that Baruch has to offer.

Hello, THE MET

On October 9th, I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art alone. Yes, Alone! I just had the plan sudden impulse, and I realized that there is blog assignment due tomorrow. Moreover, the MET is also a part of the assignment of global class I need to go. After I bought the ticket, I walked straight forward to the Egypt exhibition. After I took the photos that I need, I start lounging around because the MET is too large to take look the all the exhibits. The first exhibit I went is the Egypt, then the Japanese, Ancient China, and random exhibits. However, this journey is so fascinating. I saw the “The Thinker” status and Blue hippopotamus “William” and its “brother”, an another blue hippo. PixCell-Deer created by Kōhei Nawa at the Japanese exhibit gives the impression to me. The deer has been completely transformed by a lot of “PixCell” beads. Although I was not really interested in history, those exhibits still showed me how beautiful the history is.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A few friends and I went to the Metropolitan Museum of art to see some of the exhibits. Together we went to the World War One exhibit that is there and saw a lot of pictures from the time. A lot of it was anti war paintings showing the destruction of war. There were pictures that showed before and after of some areas from the war areas completely destroyed. Some showed the countries of Europe fighting each other and others showed the battles. The exhibit was very interesting and I enjoyed it very much it showed how some people viewed the war. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. MET

I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on September 21, 2017. This was my first time going to the MET. I never got the chance to visit the MET till now. I went by myself because my friends went last week already. The MET is big. It is like a maze to me, but the good thing was that I got a map. The map was very helpful. It gave me a general idea where each collection is. I visited the Egyptian Art first since I am currently learning that in my History class. I went to the second floor, the European Paintings 1250-1800. The sizes of the painting vary dramatically. Next, is the Asian Art, I saw all kinds of jars, bowls, dishes made from different materials. The Buddha of Medicine Bhaishaiyaguru is fascinating to me because the piece is gigantic and it is in great condition. Finally, I went to the Temple of Dendur in the Sackler Wing. Going to the MET was a great experience.

M.E.T

The Metropolitan Museum Of Art, or MET for short, was a very interesting experience for me. I visited the World War I visual arts exhibit, which showed a large amount of old paintings and pictures that narrated life during World War I. Despite it being a rather small exhibit, it contained a lot of pretty interesting paintings and pictures such as Liverpool Shipping, Aerial view Of Vaux in France, and the Bacchanates. The exhibit was relatively quiet so there wasn’t much room to talk or observe out loud, but I found the pictures and descriptions beneath the pictures quite interesting. Overall, it was a calm experience for me and I thought it was really chill.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

On Saturday October 7th, I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art with some friends. Surprisingly I haven’t been to this museum in about 10 years and it’s obviously better than I can remember. I only planned on visiting two exhibitions since it’s a very big place and it would take too long to look at all the exhibits they have. I visited the Ancient Egyptian exhibit primarily because I find some of their artwork fascinating and very interesting. More specifically, I have always found their tombs interesting and many times I’ve wondered how they created their pyramids. In addition, I also looked at the huge collection of European paintings and sculptures, and as a bonus there was a Rodin exhibition being held. I saw some of his creations and learned a bit about him. Overall, my experience at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was great and I definitely recommend anyone to go there and looking at some of the most well known art pieces in the world.

Club Activity

Last Friday, October 6th, I attended to first official team meeting of Model United Nation club. To get into MUN club, we had to pass selective application process and move on to net step, interview process. Since my high school didn’t have Model UN team, I was particularly interested in their activity. In the club, students are assigned countries, and we are going to introduce the country, its problems, and solution for the particular problems.

I decided to join this club primarily because I want to know more about what is happening in the world. When I was in middle school, I read a book about Seirra Leone where people have the shortest life expectancy. It is a nonfiction story written by one Japanese medical doctor who went to Sierra Leone as a member of Medical Sans Frontiers. Since then, I understood how life is like to most of the people in the world and how fortunate I was to be born in safe environment. Secondary reason is because I though it is a great way to build important skills such as leadership, and understand cultural differences.

Team members are meeting every Friday from 6 to 9 pm. It might be hard to get used to it at begging, but I want to push myself into the harder situation. Model UN team members will have chance to attend real conferences at the United Nation. My big dream now is to speech at the conference. I want to do the best I can to contribute to the team, and improve myself in this club.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Yesterday on October 8th, I went on a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the MET for short. My only purpose for going to the Museum was to visit the exhibit featuring World War 1 and the artists around the world who published artwork based on the event. At first, I was lost trying to find the exhibit and ended up walking through many other rooms that held different themes and artwork to display. I spent most of my time wandering around the European artwork and sculptures exhibit which was an incredible experience because I never understood how much effort it took to create the masterpieces of art such as the one you see in the picture below. In addition to European culture, I also visited the American portion of the museum which not only contained art from American history but antiques such as furniture and documents. It took about 30 minutes until I finally came to the World War 1 exhibit. It was rather small in comparison to other rooms such as the European art gallery but its content was very gloomy when I inspected it. Most of the art was colorless and depicted the horrifying aspects of the Great War such as trench warfare and soldiers suffering from disease and injury. I also noticed many posters of propaganda in the room though most of it was French and Russian and only one American poster was displayed.

The MET museum

I went to the MET museum with my friends on the afternoon of Sep 15,2017.The museum is still very big and full of galleries as I first time visited there.

We went there with a history assignment of visiting Mesopotamia part and China part. The first thing we did was to get a map of this big museum. There are a lot of sections there and we cost a long time for finding the right section.

The most impressive part would be the Chinese arts section. That part is so amazing. There are a lot of fantastic traditional Chinese art works there.I’m from China and I am working for a Auction House as a part time job.But I still saw a lot amazing Chinese arts that I’ve never seen before, such as the Buddha and guanyin statues.

We cost almost 3 hours for only 2 sections but we really learned a lot of detailed things. The whole museum is very quiet and is in a good environment. It’s really a good place for visiting and studying some historical knowledges.
