Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DTD

Student Life: Muslim Student Association

As a new student in Baruch, I strove to make new friends. I already had a few friends from Bronx Science who currently attend Baruch, but I wanted to make more connections in this exciting, new setting. Inzamam, one of my friends from high school, is the vice president of the Muslim Student Association (MSA) and he suggested I come along to meet new people and get a feel for the club. I was part of the MSA at Bronx Science, but I didn’t feel comfortable because of how close everybody already seemed to be. I felt a little hesitant when Inzamam asked me to come but I went along because I thought it could be different from high school. And yes, my instincts were correct. It was different.

Once entering the lecture room where the MSA was having the meeting, I was overwhelmed by the number of people who were attending. There were many different types of people, most of whom who practice Islam and a general few who wanted to gain knowledge about the religion.

What caught me aback was the vast number of people standing as board members.

They all introduced themselves and it turned out that it was actually a mixture of three different clubs. There was the Muslim Student Association (MSA), the Muslim Business Association (MBA), and Women In Islam (WII). The latter two clubs peaked my interest in this organization as a whole because I’ve only ever heard of the MSA.

The MSA regards the spiritual aspects of Islam, the MBA is about the professional and career aspects, and WII concerns about the women and their role in Islam. All of the board members were very fun and intriguing. They all have different majors which made me feel more comfortable, as I was a Biology major attending a Business school.

They gave out Thai food, which I’ve never had in my life so I enjoyed the meeting even more. Everyone around me was fun and friendly. I really felt included and I can see myself as an active member of the club.

Fro blog post 1-Student Life

It was Convocation day during the Club Carnival and I already knew that I wanted to join a club, I just didn’t know which one to join. I was walking around looking at all the club’s tables and reading their pamphlets when a guy carrying three boxes of pizza asked me if I wanted some pizza, I of course said yes and he said all I have to do is join Hillel. At that point I did not know what Hillel was, but if free pizza was involved I know I wanted in. I followed him to the room to eat the pizza and that is where I saw a whole bunch of people wearing Yarmulkes, and I thought to myself, “okay this is interesting” So I stayed there and listened to what they had to say and I found out that Hillel is the center of Jewish culture here at Baruch. I am not Jewish and neither were some of the other students in the room, but that was okay they told me because they want more people to join, they are accepting of everyone. I found it very interesting so I decided to stick with the club to see what it has to offer. Since then I have gone to two meetings and it has been a lot of fun. I found out that they have different little clubs within this one club and they are very diverse in what they do, for example, they have a club called BOSS which is a primarily Russian club for Russian students, but of course they encourage everyone to join. They are very involved with the different school activities and cultural activities which I also found interesting because I love to learn things about different cultures and different people and I feel that it falls very well with me because I am an International Business major and I will be interacting with many different people from around the world.

Fro Blog#1- Alpha Kappa Psl

Last Thursday, I went to some clubs to see am I interested to join. However, I choose to participated in Alpha Kappa Psl which is an organization helps you to developed professional skills that includes dress code, speaking, resumes and etc. in business fields. I went to this meeting and make my decision to join is because it is really good for my major as being an accountant to work with business in the future.

The members that was taking charge of the club were very welcome. There was a girl named Sarah, she invited me and my friends to go in and very friendly to introduced herself at first then telling us not to worry because we were the only freshmans in that meeting. We had some food right before the meeting starts and the president introduced the club with a presentation. It provided fully details such as what activity they have been doing in the past few years and how does the club helps to develop your business professional skills by walking with you step by step. Also in order to become a member, I have to be qualify by going to 3 events such as 1 general interest meeting, 1 professional, and 1 social or philanthropy in order to meet the standard for this club.

Lastly, I hope I wouldn’t regret on the decision I made. I am so excited to make some new friends in the club which we could help each other in the path to be successful as the life goes. I am really to get more involved and learn more about what the club has provided.

Fro Blog Post #1(Student Life)

This Last Thursday I joined the E-sport club at Baruch. I also joined the Anime club as well the Thursday before that but I only took this one picture at  the E-sports one. Bart Actually introduce to me to the club which previously did not know of. Thank you Bart if you are reading this. I’ll see you there 🙂

To talk about the E sport. Although I’m new to it, I learned that it not only just a “gaming club” but also a place to make new friends. It’s a place to connect with those who have similar taste in video games and create bonds. On the video side, they have both casual and competitive, so if you just like playing basics fun games with friends or like to be competitive in videos games this is the place for you. I hope to continue my journey with the E-sports club and make new friends.

To talk about the Anime club. Once again, it a really cool place as well. Anime club It pretty self explanatory, it’s a great place for somebody who loves anime and connect with those who share the same love for anime.  You can build bonds with others and talk about anime that you watch or perhaps learn about new anime as well. They also host events through out the year that pertain to anime, I forgot exactly what they were but if it peaks your interest I highly suggest you look em up and join.

Overall,  Both clubs are awesome and are not to be overlook. If you have a love or interest for videos games both casual and competitve than e-sports club is something to look up. If you love Anime like One piece, Naruto and attack on titan, than give anime club a try.

#1 – Student Life

Last Thursday I went to a club meeting for Ascend, which is a business organization for Pan-Asians. I had no intention of joining but one of the leaders, Shile, told us that there was free lunch and convinced my friend and I to go. I haven’t joined any clubs at this point so I figured why not. When I walked into Ascend, I was immediately greeted with friendly club members. Unfortunately they seemed to be all out of food by the time I got there. Since we went in a bit late, the meeting had already ended and everyone was just standing around and chatting. The president, Richard Tang, talked to me and my friend and he gave us a rundown of what the club is and what they do. He gave me the organization’s business card and we gathered to take a group picture before everyone was dismissed. By the time I left, I still wasn’t entirely sure of what the club was. I just knew it was some sort of business club and they provide networking opportunities and help develop skills for Asians in the marketing, finance, and business communities.

The people were very welcoming and I would probably go back again, but this time at the beginning of club meetings so I wouldn’t miss everything like I did the first time. I think this will be a great opportunity for me to talk to older students and see what their experience is like in the marketing field since it is something that I might be interested in. Everyone was chill and it seemed like a good place to meet new people and make friends. In general, I enjoyed my time at Ascend, and I hope to get more involved and learn more about what the club has to offer.

FRO DTD Blog #1- E-Sports Assoication

On September 9th, I went to the general interest meeting for Baruch E-Sports Association with my friends. The meeting took place in room 4-180 in the Newman Vertical Campus. E-sports are multiplayer video games played competitively by professional players. Some examples of e-sports are League of Legends, CSGO, Dota, and Super Smash Bros. Melee. I went to the meeting because I want to meet other people who play the same games as me. Unfortunately, no one plays the same games as me.

In my first meeting, the president, Tiffany Yee, and the vice president, Feng Lan, introduced themselves to us. Then, they talked about League of Legend and CSGO, the two games Baruch sponsors. They spoke about having tryouts for those two games. It was unimportant to me because I don’t play CSGO or League of Legends. Next, the president talked about how our next meeting is in the computer lab. After that, the vice president talks about the accomplishments of the clubs. One of the accomplishment was that the Baruch’s CSGO team won first place in a tournament.  They have foods and drinks for us to eat for lunch. I was so hungry and ate my first slice of pizza quickly. During lunch, I talked to my friend, Marcus, about Nintendo games. I play a game called Super Smash Bros. 4 and Pokemon while my friend plays games on Steam and Pokemon. After lunch, the president asked, “Which games do we play?” Most people in the club play League of Legends and CSGO.  Then, we played an icebreaker to get to know each other. I talked with my friend’s friends. I learned that he likes to play a game called Overwatch. After the icebreaker, we took a group photo of each other. FInally, I decided to leave the meeting after the photo. I still don’t know what club I want to join. It was interesting but I don’t think this is the club for me.

FRO BLOG #1- Joining Hillel

For the first few weeks of Baruch, I was unsure of what club or student organization I wanted to be a part of. As the first few weeks went on, I heard my friends  talk about Hillel and why Hillel was the scene of the “chill”. They mentioned all the lunchtime learning initiatives, and how the free food was incredible. The one thing that all my friends kept mentioning but continued to stick to me was that it was a community. I decided that in order to make my Baruch experience even more enjoyable, I needed to be a part of some community and Hillel would be the perfect fit.

When I walked into Hillel, I was shocked by the amount of people that were just there to chill. I saw ten of my friends all sitting together eating some pizza and sandwiches and just talking about there day. I sat down and chilled alongside them, when the president of the Hillel came over to me and introduced all the daily activities that go on throughout the day. Theres lunch and learn with free lunch, Sunday events and guest speakers that come to speak on a regular basis. I signed up and sat in on a lunch and learn that was taking place in the back. Even though the Hillel was a little small and cramped, it still fostered a environment of community. Everyone either knew each other, had mutual friends, or met someone new. Hillel is a really good resource for meeting new people but also being able to hang out with friends that you already know. I also felt really comfortable talking to students from the higher grades and was able to get some much needed advice for the year. Now I know that the Hillel is a place I could come to to utilize helpful resources and to meet up and chill with friends.

Joining Absolute Adrenaline

I went to the meeting of Absolute Adrenaline club on Thursday. The reason I wanted to join this club was, it seemed great in the pictures of the club members playing paintball, I had never done that in my entire life. By that, I meant I had never joined a club in high school nor had I played paintball. The first thing we did in the room was an ice breaking game, the rule of the game was to pick a captain, and a guesser, everyone has to follow the action of the captain, the guesser has to guess who is the captain. The game was quite funny, we brought up the mood, and that was when the club member started to introduce what we will do if we joined this club.

As I mentioned, the Club name was what they wanted us to do on/off club time. They did sports like ball games (basketball, volley ball, table tennis, and football, they got the downstair gym as the play spot.) during club time; hiking, climbing, paintball, ice skating and, many others off school or during weekends.

In my perspective, joining a club is a big part of 4 years college life, especially for the first two year. You can make friends in the club, you will meet new people like the president of your club, he/she must be great or how come he/she has a club? The last but no least, you can join a major club like finance major club and, accounting major club etc. In there you will meet people who has the same major as you, you can discuss major questions or point of views during the club, or you can even discuss about the assignments, you will find a brand new world when you joined a club.

Joining the E-Sports club

My first activity was to join a club and what better club for me was the E-Sports club. The second i entered the club room i knew this was the place for me. Everybody had the same interests as me and were very welcoming and interactive and eager to speak about their own interests. Once we started to meat the club President and other members from the club they were very welcoming and seemed to show a lot of enthusiasm for everybody to join, and try out for their competitive teams.

Once the president showed us how competitive the club was it was overwhelming. Their club members won 20,000$ from a past tournament in an online game and everybody was very good at the games they played. They all seemed to be very strict with how they would recruit members to join the competitive teams and help them succeed in tournaments and play well. However they also reassured us that there is a casual side to the club where u can come in and hang out with other members and causally play games and get better with them overtime.

The club seemed like a lot of fun to improve on my gaming and to make new friends that have the same taste as me. The club president also told us that they were setting up a part of the library that would be reserved to the club members so they could play games on their free time and enjoying playing games with other members. The club itself was very organised and strict with recruitment policies for teams and had many branches to the club to make it all work together and had helpful and friends members all around. I personally won’t join any of their competitive team because i’m not good enough yet but i will most likely be part of the regular club activities.

Joining Hillel because its fun

My first experience at Hillel was great, I enjoyed the Programming and I also enjoyed the people in the organization. Everyone was very nice and welcoming and I knew I was going to join this organization. Hillel offers so many great things to young adults especially being in a club where everyone values the Jewish heritage and the Israeli culture. The organization has many clubs attached to it as well, and I will be joining one of the clubs. The organization is super active and always has programs to go to.

I went to a program and I really enjoyed it. We listened to a singer talk about her past and how she dealt with cancer right in the middle of her music career. I wouldn’t have ever heard her story, but thanks to Hillel I did because it was very inspirational and educational.

One of the perks of joining Hillel is that there is always food. They have had pizza, Chinese food, and even sandwiches so far. Food is a available at every program. Another perk of joining Hillel is that you get to meet new people and make friends who share interests with you. And a third perk is being part of a community because it is nice to be a part of something that is so big.

I see myself getting involved in the organization during the year a lot because I enjoy the atmosphere and vibe. I want to be an active member and constantly show up to as many programs as I can so that I can learn and enjoy what is being talked about.

Hillel is a very good club and seems to be very active at Baruch, so I might as well enjoy what has been offered to me and take all the advantages that the organization gives to me.
