Final Project Analysis

Logotype – Melasha Barr

For the final project, I really wanted to choose something to challenge myself. Since I struggled the most with using the type to make a design, I chose to do the Logotype project. I chose Emily’s name for my logo and her initials were E. H. F. Upon moving the letters around, I discovered that her initials could spell out HEF, as in Hugh Hefner. I then came up with the concept of a robe collection that’s Hugh Hefner inspired and designed the logo with that idea in mind. I experimented with the colors red, black, gold, and Playboy pink, and with letter size, and placement. In the end, I came up with 41 logo designs, but luckily Emily helped me to choose the final logo. The logo uses the Helvetica typeface, and pink, white, and black colors. I feel like the design is girly and out of the box just like Emily. This project was so much fun and I’ve learned a lot even though it was a short amount of time. This class has wet my appetite for more graphic design classes and I will most likely be taking more in the future.

For my final project, I chose to create an 8 page brochure. My topic for this was the company I work for, Starbright Floral Design. Even though my job has many creative aspects, I chose to stick to showing the business side of it in my brochure. This meant sticking to the same format on all of my spreads, only varying the type on the page and the photo displayed. I used Baskerville as my typeface throughout, mostly because I feel its a very versatile font.

One thing that was difficult for me during this project, which was also a learning experience, was properly placing my text around my photo. It was extremely tedious to make sure it was placed in the same location on every page. This project has made me more open to observing all the little details in every aspect of a design.

Final Project Analysis

For my final project I chose to do the Brochure. The theme for my brochure was Illicit Mind which is my company. I choose to do my company for this project because I knew that this would help me not only do well on the project but be able to used what I learned in the semester in real life.

As for the design aspect of the project I kept the layout very minimal with a lot of white space. Because I was providing clusters of information I wanted to make sure that this information was clear to read and didn’t overwhelm the reader. I used the typeface Trebuchet as my headlines, Bodoni Bold as sublines and Bodoni Book for my paragraphs. Using Bodoni with Trebuchet looked clean and they complimented each other very well. Within the paragraphs I made my font 14pt and my leading 15pt to give it a spacial look but also not too far apart.

This project taught me how I can use type to design something. Many times people drown things with images, movement and many other things to make it look exciting and interesting. Using the type to design now shows me that you can keep something simple and still get the same message across.

Overall I enjoyed this class and I also really enjoyed this project.

For the final project, I decided to make a brochure about Irving Penn. The reason why I chose to do the brochure was because I felt like I could take what I had learned from the previous project and explore it even more with the 8 page layout. Irving Penn’s work is bold without being chaotic. I felt that my style, of being more minimal, would be a good design layout for his work. Therefore, I decided to make the theme black and white with making sure to use a lot of negative space. I wanted it to look very clean and open in order to showcase his work. This is why I did not pick any fancy typefaces for titles and I stuck with Baskerville for all the texts.

This project not only made me learn new things, but it also helped me grow by continuing from the previous project. Because of this, I was further able expand my design idea. Throughout this project, I tried to be very cautious of all the main guidelines I had learned. I was cautious of being consistent through the brochure, making sure the alignment of text and images were aligned as well as many other things. I really enjoyed this project and it was were I was able to see my growth the most.

For the final project, I decided to do a brochure on St. Lucia.  I chose St. Lucia because it is a beautiful place to vacation and there was a lot of pictures. During this project I had a bit of a hard time because my project was not consistent with the first page.  Which set the tone for the project when I redid it I make all picture in a vertical placement. The text I used was century expand Italics, roman, and maybe baskerville. Working with the grid was so-so there was times it was easy and there was times it was not. When one page moves it affects the rest of the pages after it. Picking a typeface to me was hard because I did not like the way some of them looked.  Since I chose a vacation place I wanted to add pictures to every slide. But in doing so I had to find a balance to it make it look neat and appealing without over doing it. I learned a lot doing this project placing pictures on the grid and making it work was frustrating.  Throughout my project there are quotes, and a bit of information I also used the colors blue, yellow, and black.  Overall, I liked the project the way it turned out the second time is was better.

For the final project, I decided to do a brochure on the TV show Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks takes place in the early 90’s and Lucy, the secretary of the sheriff’s department is always typing on her typewriter. So for my typeface for my headings and quotes I decided to go with Lucida Sans Typewriter to relate back to Lucy’s typewriter and the show. For the body text I went with Helvetica  because I thought it really worked well with Lucida Sans Typewriter. I also chose this typeface because I really thought that it gave the brochure that old look, like an old newspaper. It also just worked with the strange element that I was going for…because Twin Peaks is strange and weird.

I learned a lot from the project with working with the layout. Theres was a lot more that I wanted to incorporate but with the limited space I needed to decided what I wanted to show the most. I changed the layout and the idea for this project about four or five times, even after doing many sketches. Once I got into Indesign I was able to see what was going to work and what wasn’t. This project gave me a better understanding for what is needed in creating a layout for a brochure or any kind of print media, but I know there is still a lot more that I can learn.

I really enjoyed working on this project because it challenged me mentally and physically. I strived to create a welcoming and relaxed theme throughout my brochure with the different shades of green and multiple images of nature. Each spread had its own category of the essential information for a guide to hiking. One exception being page 6, which showcased a famous hiking area in the United States. I used several typefaces throughout my project. For the Title and Subtitles Helvetica seemed to contribute to the relaxed theme of my project. As for the text, Garamond was ideal because of it’s readability. Lastly, the quote placed in page 5 of my project was written with an italic version of Baskerville. This helped the quote stand out. I was able to to improve my InDesign skills through the repetitive actions performed in this project. I also learned a new action which allows a picture to be cropped and reshaped using a “hollow arrow tool.” Another aspect to InDesign that I learned was how to transfer a file from one computer to the other by saving it as an imbd file and linking images.

Final Project Analysis

I did my project on the brochure because I thought using the grid would be interesting and there are many ways to use the grid to my advantage, however how hard it may seem. At first, I had a really hard time picking the topic to do the project. I had many different topics I was interested to do, but at the last moment, I picked to do the violins. I liked the feel of classical music but I didn’t want to do an overall picture of classical music because there was too many topics to cover. Violins was a much more specific topic to do. However, I felt there wasn’t any purpose to it. It didn’t feel like a brochure. Until I talked to one of my classmates about buying or selling something. Then I got the idea I should make some guide about it because I wasn’t selling it actually.

My design approach was to use the color brown and black but it looked like I was going to the country to see cows and playing the guitar, so I ended up using brown and blue. I chose blue because it’s like water and the color changes like the sound changes (tones of the violin changing the atmosphere of something) but I didn’t play with the color gradients yet. If I had more time I think I would use color gradients it make the color look more transparent instead of a really bold look to it. It was also hard for me to use negative space and white around the brochure because I wanted to look like an informational guide. I think I should have played more with the white space because I didn’t have any white space. However, if I tweaked with the white space I feel everything would look weird because I had leading along my lines so it looks airy. I chosen Baskerville because it looks well with the violin pictures more than the other typefaces. I learned a lot from this project especially how to design better with consistency. I wasn’t aware there were problems with how I made inconsistent design but I did know there was a problem in all my pages because of the big text. I wasn’t really aware of the inconsistency until the professor pointed it out in our projects. Overall, I enjoyed this project and this whole class. It was nice seeing everyone’s designs and it broadened my perspective in things. Thanks everyone. Have a nice summer.

Final Project Analysis

When I first began the project I had in mind to design a subway advertisement. It was a very tedious task for because I was stuck on the technical parts of indesign and photoshop. This project required us using everything we have learned thus far in class. I guess my problem was sticking to a specific design because we had so many choices. After numerous tries i decided to incorporate the “i” of iPhone because we rely so much on technology now to go throughout our day.

I decided to imitate the iPhone alarm clock and recreate it with colorful words and the times that I do each thing. I left a lot of white space to focus more on the words and to show the simplicity of iPhone. I tightened the letter spacing in the alarm times so it can seem more as an alarm. In the last word Run, I used more letter spacing to vividly show running. This project was the most challenging for me to complete, but I am very satisfied with the end result.

For final project, I decided to create a brochure. I didn’t hesitate to pick ‘opening ceremony’ as my brand because they had their own signature logos and colors, and I thought it would be easy to show in the brochure. Nevertheless, I had hard time designing the brochure because they pursue for basic and plain designs. Their signature colors are black and white but when I first used those colors for the cover page, it seemed really simple. So it didn’t seem consistent whenever I tried to add more colors to next few pages. Therefore, I used yellow and blue for all pages and made them as signature colors for my brochure. I used Helvetica for all heads, headers and captions. However, I tried to differentiate them by reducing sizes and increasing weights. All heads are boldest out of all letters and I used different sizes for subheads and captions. I also didn’t use light yellow for color because it would have readability problem. I tried to use all the techniques that I’ve learned for this class and corrected the flaws that I had before. It was challenging to create eight pages brochure out of all projects but I really enjoyed creating one
