“(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay”

While listening to this song by Otis Redding, I really enjoyed the melody and the sound effects that they added into the background. I had the lyrics of this song open while listening, and the lyrics seemed to match with the story of the song. When he talks about sitting on the dock of the bay and watching the tides roll away, you can hear the sounds of the waves in the background. Using this sound effect, it helps the listeners to feel as though they are basking in the sun alongside Otis Redding. In his lyrics, when he talks about sitting on a dock and looking into the sunset, it seems like he is reflecting on his life. Looking into the waves, he sits there not wanting to go through change and he states it when he says “Looks like nothing’s gonna change everything still remains the same I can’t do what ten people tell me to do.”

Going Through Changes

In this song by Eminem, he mainly talks about how he is at a low point in his life because of drugs and other complications in his life and how he realizes who he is, helping him recover. In his lyrics, he tells us of his story about his addiction to drugs and how it is affecting not only him, but also his family, which includes his daughters. In the line “But life keeps on complicating an’ I’m debating on leaving this world, this evening, even my girls…” he conveys how his problems bring him to a point of contemplating suicide. “…you can’t stop with these pills and you’ve fallen off with your skills, and your own fans are laughin’ at you.” tells of his problem with drugs. Eventually, his line “Wake up in the hospital, full of tubes, plus somehow I’m pullin’ through swear when I come back I’ma be bulletproof.” shows how he has overcome his difficulties, and has decided to not run away from his problems, but face them. His journey of recovering from his addictions to drugs and other problems shows the idea of progressing from a low point.

Conclusion First Draft

Imagine being a Baruch student again, walking outside of your dormitory and getting on a free shuttle that drops you off right in front of your school. You walk along One Bernard Way and enjoy the green space the school has created. After taking our your ID card and walking through the revolving doors, you see no lines for the elevators and you decide to take it to your next class. Improving Baruch College goes hand in hand with improving students’ lives. Ever since the Baruch community moved from its original campus to the Newman Vertical Campus in 2001, there has been a boom in student loyalty. As one of the best CUNY schools Baruch College’s retention rate for first year students was ninety two percent and still has the potential to rise. We leave here in hope that everyone considers these suggestions we have made today and make Baruch home-everybody’s home.

“I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”

In Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech “I’ve been to the Mountaintop,” which is addressed to Memphis, Martin Luther King Jr. starts off and begins to talk to the audience as if having a conversation rather than giving a formal speech. In this informal conversation he has with the audience, he is able to bring together the audience, gaining support from the listeners. He uses the everyday scenarios and his personal life experiences in his speech to talk to the audience at a personal level. He pictures the almost-perfect America when he states, “I would take my mental flight by Egypt (Yeah), and I would watch God’s children in their magnificent trek from the dark dungeons of Egypt through, or rather, across the Red Sea, through the wilderness, on toward the Promised Land. And in spite of its magnificence, I wouldn’t stop there. (All right).” After, he continues to talk about the extent to which he still has hope for America in changing its views on prejudice. And when he talks about the mountaintop, I think that he is referring to not just the equality of all races, but the unity of the nation when he mentions the mountaintop.

Dorm Experience Enhancement

Hello Baruch Administrators, fellow students, and faculty. We are here to suggest an idea for an improvement of the college experience for the 240 students that pay to live in the Baruch dorms. Baruch is located on 24th street and Lexington Ave. However, the Baruch dorms are located on 97th street and 3rd Ave., approximately 70 blocks away from the college. A major reason students choose to dorm is to reduce the commute, but students that dorm in Baruch still face the hassle of commuting. We will show that there are feasible solutions to this issue of commuting.

Ideally, a quick fix to this problem would be purchasing a building that is closer to Baruch. But of course, this is an unrealistic solution. A more logical approach would be to implement a shuttle bus service.

Nature

“To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society.” Ralph Waldo Emerson starts off this chapter by telling us how one can go into complete solitude. To Ralph Waldo Emerson, true solitude can be achieved when one goes out into nature and leaves behind all of his thoughts along with society. He also starts the chapter off by telling us of stars and how great they appear to the eyes of men. The stars are able to separate a man from “what he is touching,” which is the ground of the Earth. These stars should appear as great as they appear even a thousand years later according to Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Ralph Waldo Emerson describes stars as present but inaccessible because in order to see stars, one needs to see it with the his/her “inward and outward senses” when they are “still truly adjusted to each other.” Nature needs to be seen with the simplicity of childhood. Therefore, most adults are unable to see nature in this way. But when nature is seen with the correct balance between senses, it offers youth and joy.

The Food Sucks!

Esteemed administrators and faculty, fellow students, and members of the Baruch community, the food sucks! It’s too expensive. It’s not good quality. It’s not what we paid for. It should be better. How are we supposed to focus on studying when we don’t have the right food to fill up our empty stomaches? I think it is time to change this terrible cafeteria food, which is almost worse than the fact that our school does not have a golf team.

The Auditions Response

This article, “The Audition,” seemed very interesting and relatable, so I chose this article over the other ones on the Electric Typewriter. This article was about one of the most profound orchestras, BSO (Boston Symphony Orchestra), in the nation and the process of auditioning for one of the two spots. This article focuses on the daily life of Mike Tetreault and a couple other musicians who are chasing after the spots. Auditions, for almost everyone, are always very nerve-wracking and intense. Since this audition is for one of the biggest, if not the biggest, orchestra in the nation, many of the musicians spend unimaginable numbers of hours practicing. A wrong note, playing on the wrong beat, or even the wrong accent on a note could be the end of the audition of a lifetime, since almost ninety percent of the players get members have tenure.

Mike Tetreault, ever since he found out about this audition, which was about two years ago, has been practicing about a hundred hours a week and even practicing 20 hours a day some days. Telling the life Mike Tetreault, “The Audition” makes its readers think that the extent to which Mike practices for this opportunity is enough and that Mike Tetreault is possibly going to be one of the two new additions to this prestigious orchestra. When I found out at the end of the article that Mike Tetreault did not make the cut, I was surprised that someone who was so devoted and passionate about making the auditions was cut.

I think that the writer wants the readers to realize the harsh qualities of the auditions that take place for many of these top orchestras. Although, Mike Tetreault was not able to become a member, he still keeps his desire to continue to progress in his musical career. Mike states “Give me success or take this desire away from me,” and his ambition to continue his musical career is present in this statement.
