CUNY Innovative Teaching Academy (CITA) Summer Series 2022: Creating Inclusive Classrooms: Fundamentals of Mindfulness and Trauma

June 2, 2022 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm EDT

Hosted by: CUNY Central Office of Academic Affairs

Join us  for a workshop facilitated by Chia-Ti Chiu of the Lineage Project, addressing the burnout, trauma and isolation that are taking a profound toll on students’ well-being and sustainability both inside and outside of school. Having a framework to understand the various ways trauma manifests can help us understand our students’ behavior and triggers. When this framework of trauma-conscious care is coupled with mindfulness, we can learn ways to support and resource ourselves and also our students.

In this 90-minute online workshop, we’ll explore the fundamental concepts of trauma and mindfulness, including:

•Defining trauma with the understanding that it is a mind and body phenomenon

•Discussing different kinds of trauma and how challenging behavior can be a result of trauma rather than personality •Exploring short, simple mindfulness and somatic practices that can support staff’s wellbeing, strengthen our nervous systems, and boost our individual and collective resilience

•Identifying ways to turnkey mindfulness practices to cultivate a culture of collective wellbeing

This workshop will offer a mix of experiential learning, didactic content, and group discussion. We will experiment with simple mindfulness practices to provide participants with an embodied awareness of what practices resonate for them personally to support them in their relational work in the classroom, as well as how to incorporate these practices into their student work.
