Part 1: Bibliographic entry

David Reibstein. “Overall Best Country Ranking”. U.S News, April 2021, https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/overall-rankings.

Part 2: Terminology/Keywords

  • Agility
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Quality of life
  • Movers
  • Social purpose
  • Cultural influence
  • Open for business
  • Power
  • Adventure
  • Heritage

part 3: Précis

Although it is not your traditional news article, U.S News, a reputable media company, developed a thorough analysis ranking of the best countries in the world. The ranking is done using the methods of David Reibstein, a professor at the University who works closely with U.S News and studies the following aspects of a country: Agility, Entrepreneurship, Quality of life, Movers, Social purpose, Cultural influence, Open for business, Power, Adventure, Heritage.  U.S News and Reibstein’s intentions for making this article are to help understand how their nation is doing relative to others, it also is created for lawmakers and global leaders to take into account how they’re doing and how researchers perceive the handling of their share of the planet. To justify his rankings and make it clear their not biased, Reibsten tells us he uses a complex methodology that includes the requirement of 17,000 surveys from the countries that participate in the rankings that influence his research and measuring of where each nation lands in his classing of the countries.

Part 4: Reflection

As I said earlier, this is not your traditional news article with body paragraphs and a concluding one, but one I find interesting about this article as someone who is trying to argue whether the United States of America is the greatest country on the planet is that source is not a singular one but from a vast number of people from the country and that is also how this ranking is concluded. It also goes in-depth about the vital aspects of a country like power, quality of life, and social purpose and where it stands compared to other countries which can gateway me to finding articles why America isn’t #1 in this respective aspects compared to other nations.  Another reason I found this article striking is that it’s published by an American company and researched by an American professor yet portrays America as inferior to other countries in some aspects, just like any of other country and most importantly, gives reason to why America isn’t the #1 ranked country in the world.

Part 5: Quotables

“The United States of America is a North American nation that is the world’s most dominant economic and military power. Likewise, its cultural imprint spans the world, led in large part by its popular culture expressed in music, movies and television.”

“The country is still grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing deep economic recession. And calls for greater social justice reignited in the country following the death of Black American George Floyd at the hands of police in May 2020. Public demands to address racial inequality in the country, expressed in institutions such as the criminal justice system and health care, spurred similar movements in countries around the world. “

  1. Roderick,
I loved the way you broke down your source and how you chose a website that ranks all the best countries in the world! I feel like this will be a great addition to your research paper. As you pointed out, the article puts an emphasis on aspects that contribute to a great country like the quality of life and social purpose. I think these aspects are important to understand what constitutes a country as being great. Overall, I think this seems like a great source and I’m sure that it will strengthen your essay.

  2. Roderick,

This article sounds very interesting and informative! I definitely think this could be useful in your research paper in the sense that like you said, this is from an American company and researched by an American professor yet portrays the U.S. as inferior to other countries. I think that perspective will be super useful when you write your research paper!
