The other week I had the distinct privilege of attending the Hillel Career and Startup tech fair. There was kosher food provided which was amazing and it was fairly delicious. We had hummus and tahini as well as a variety of pita and schnitzel. After I grabbed my seat with my friends, Sofa and Cyntia I had the distinct pleasure of introducing them to some Israeli and Jewish culture which they were wildly unfamiliar with. As the program proceeded I got to hear all about the things the amazing people on the panel had to say about how they attained the position they were currently holding and their journey through the startup nation. The startup nation was really cool to find out about. After the speaking, question and answer part of the presentation, I got to talk with many fellow students about our love for the land of Israel and our drive for devotion to success. As the program continued my business network really increased tenfold I got to meet so so many people who really related to me and had a deep and profound interest within in the business world revolving around Israel. The program was a huge success and being a part of the Hillel I was thrilled to see how well it turned out. In the aftermath of the event speaking to the heads of the Hillel they were very happy with how it went and it really was a launchpad for a lot of the students’ careers. אני לא אוהב בלוג פוסט אבל אני אוהב ישראל.

Careers
For my careers blog post I attended a Latinos in business type of event. It was sponsored by success network, and I heard about the event through a friend enrolled to success network’s mailing list. I’ve heard a million statistics about how hard it is for Latinos to find jobs in today’s market, even with “Equal Opportunity”, I’ve heard even more about Latinas in business. In certain careers some demographics just didn’t do well, and when I was younger I accepted this as fact. I once overheard a classmate say the only industry Latinas could be taken seriously was in sex work. My mother wasn’t in agreement, when I parroted the discussion back to her later that night. That being said, I think it’s fantastic our school has panels like the one I attended: relaying information such as quotas of minorities some companies were obligated to fill, showing us where to find resources for resume building help or workshops on how to write cover letters. Even more important I think we’re the success stories I heard that day, a woman who had worked her way from the Lower East Side to managerial positions. The statistic for women salaries in comparison to men’s is 70 cents to their dollar. For a minority woman that can get lowered to between 68 and 58 depending on which minority, and which field. Which is why it is so important we know we can access resources from our school or community. When I was applying to college my mom encouraged me to apply to scholarships for minorities, or specifically hispanics, I refused on the grounds that I’m biracial, and don’t feel the disadvantages as keenly as a result, white-passing so to speak. Even so, it’s a comfort to know that should I need the help, I need only reach out, I’m too quiet about issues that affect me as it is.
Tech Startup
Last week I peaked into the Tech startup function at Baruch hosted by the Hillel. The function was very Jewish interrelated and included Kosher food and beverages that provided cultural awareness for me because I’ve never had Jewish food before. Needless to say from that experience i’ll be trying out new Jewish food. It was an interesting and useful experience seeing as I had been questioned whether or not to study and major in a technology related field. The function had a huge panel consisting of multiple entrepreneurs and startup tech companies, most of which were from israel or had some relation to Jewish heritage. I think it was interesting to see how technology and business go so hand in hand with one another and they made it very prevalent that they need more people in tech fields because it’s almost become a necessity for the society that we live in currently and would be continually growing field in the future. It made me reevaluate what I want to study and actually start taking an interest in the tech field. Honestly I think this function served an enlightening experience as I learned a lot and kind of safe guarded my decision to invest my time and money in choosing to major in cybersecurity.
Hillel Startup Tech Fair
On Thursday, Ezra, Sofa, and I attended an event hosted by Hillel. This event was the Startup Tech Fair. This was a great opportunity. There were a lot of people that attended the event. There was a large line leading out the door of Baruch to enter the room for the event. This hinted to us we were at the right place, and that the event will be helpful for us. The event provided us with information and resources we would otherwise not have. We, among other students, were able to network and meet with the founders of start-up tech companies.
This was interesting because it allowed us to see how we are able to start up our own passions. It was definitely inspiring, because it goes to show that us Baruch students are supported and given resources to succeed and pursue our passions. Of course while this event was hosted by Hillel and geared towards Jewish students, everyone was welcome and we felt that presence. This event was very interesting but not something I felt was necessarily something I would be in– just because I was intrigued by it but would rather work at a law firm or corporate office. I intend to be a corporate attorney or something amongst those lines. While my career choice would be useful for them, I’d like to be in an environment that would teach me the skills I would need. However, I am now more motivated to view different avenues for discovery. This was definitely a learning experience for me.
The MET
On Thursday, November 16th friends and I went over and walked around the Metropolitan Museum. The minute you get there you are enchanted by the outstanding atmosphere and are immediately fascinated by all your surroundings. Instantaneously the first section I wanted to look around was the exhibit of the ancient Greek and Roman. I have always been interested in Greek mythology, and seeing statues and ancient artifacts from thousands of years ago really enticed me. Fun fact that I learned was that most of these statues were sculpted not by any modeling individual but rather based solely on the sculptors image of what he pictured to be the human being. This fact was super interesting considering most of these statues are so well designed, detailed, and undeniably realistic that you would think they were based on a real human. Another exhibit that i found truly fascinating was ancient Egypt. The minute we stepped into the exhibit there was a smaller recreation of the ancient pyramids. There you were able to step inside and see the hieroglyphics and pictures that they actually drew on them, which I thought was very cool. Also, there were real life sized tombs [for mummies] for where the ancient Egyptians placed the deceased. I learned that the ancient Egyptians believed in reincarnation, where they believed they would come back after they died and that is why they were huge advocates for preserving the bodies of the dead, reason why they mummified them. Every exhibit in the metropolitan museum of Art is so beautifully and phenomenally fabricated and designed that I highly recommend it to anyone who has a chance to stop by. My visit made me truly appreciate all the outstanding and captivating pieces of art that come from all different types of nations, cultures, and people.
MET
On November 16th, four of my friends and I visited the MET. Although I have visited this museum before it seems that you learn something new every time you visit. We visited numerous exhibits such as the Roman, Greek, Egyptian, American, and the Mid evil times Exhibit as well. I found that learning about the history of civilizations and cultures from all over the world was very interesting, especially because I was able to compare all the similarities and differences from my own culture. Visiting the museum with my friends also was a great experience because we got to experience new things as a group and provided each other with new information. It was a great decision to visit the MET because of its beautiful architecture and exhibits. My favorite exhibit was Ancient Greek because I had always been interested in Greek mythology as a child. I found it extremely intriguing to actually see artifacts from a country I had a deep interest in. Although I’ve seen this exhibit before, visiting it again as a young man enabled me to appreciate the history more and connect mythology to the culture of the ancient Greeks. However, I would’ve also liked to see more exhibits from different countries which means I will defiantly making another trip to the MET. All in all, my friends and I had a wonderful time and I’m sure each of us took home one fact we found extremely interesting, especially because Veton is a walking history textbook.
Metropolitan Museum of Art
This past week, a few of my friends and I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I have never visited this museum before and my experience exploring all the different exhibits was truly fascinating. The architecture of the building alone was so detailed and it was even more in the inside. There were so many different exhibits to look at, we didn’t know what to go to first. First, we visited the ancient Greece and Rome periods. This is where we saw all of the large Greek statues of men and women and the chariots used during that time period. Then, we went to see the exhibits showing the medieval era. This is where we saw all of the knight and armor suits worn in different countries such as Japan, India, and America. Even the horses they rode on had armor on them. I couldn’t believe how the knights could fight in such heavy armor. The weapons they used were also so fascinating because of the intricate designs on the pistols and other weapons. Next, we visited the Egyptian exhibit. There was a giant open room with a sphinx and an Egyptian tomb in which you could actually walk inside. There was a lot of Egyptian art and hieroglyphics around the tombs as well. Lastly, we went to the American colonial era exhibit. This is where all of the paintings of George Washington was held. I learned in school about the famous painting of George Washington standing on a boat on the Delaware river, but I never knew how large the real painting actually is. The painting was the size of the entire wall of the room with a golden frame holding it. This was so cool and interesting to see all of the small details painted. I have never seen a bigger painting in my life. I never realized how large this museum really is. It was so complicated to figure out how to exit the museum. I had learned so much from exploring through this museum and had a lot of fun sharing all of our thoughts on the things we observed with my friends. I would love to come to the Metropolitan Museum of Art once again to see everything else it has to offer.
MET
On Thursday we went to the MET. We picked this museum because of its beauty, and all of our interest in history. We walked in the museum, bought our tickets and showed it to the security guard. As soon as we entered into the museum we were greeted with an immense and beautiful room full of statues and a very detailed ceiling. We left this room to go into the one about Roman and Greek artifacts. This was my favorite one as I have been always interested in Greek myths and Roman culture. One of the artifacts we saw, that was interesting was a cup. This cup was part of a rare Roman collection and, therefore was very precious. After this we went down and soon found ourselves in the Egyptian section. We saw a tomb, and the caskets that were used to put mummies. Next was my second favorite part, the section of knight armor. This section was full of different types of knight armor and weapons. The center of attraction was knights on horses. The horses were detailed to the fact where you could actually see the veins. Next, we headed to the American section. The American section was not that big, however as soon as you enter you see a humongous painting of George Washington and his fellow comrades during the Revolutionary war. After admiring this picture, we checked the time and it was time for us to go. We headed out, unfortunately, we didn’t know the way out so we went into a circle on our first attempt. On our second attempt, we were able to find the exit. On our way out, we were looking at the building from the outside and admiring it. The building itself was marvelous and the architecture itself was unique. We were all happy that we experienced this amazing museum.
SACC Tutoring
On Friday the 17th I went to SACC tutoring for MTH 2003 since I have been struggling lately on understanding certain topics and I tried to refresh my memory on older ones as well. It was really helpful since I attended a workshop and the tutor had a simple way of teaching. He would call on a student one by one and ask them to show him a problem they were struggling with and then he would move onto the next student and repeat the process. It was a very clear and understanding method to follow because it not only helped me, but also getting to see what others struggled with was more reassuring to know I wasn’t alone and it also showed me more topics that I should focus on for preparing for the final. For most of the workshop there were only two people attending the it and more people filtered in later on. Having a small group was beneficial because it was easier to understand what was going on because the tutor could focus longer on questions and also could answer more of my questions. Overall, he explained his responses in a simple way that could be easily understood. My tutor’s name was Carl and I would definitely recommend him to other students who need help in Pre-Cal, or MTH 2003 more specifically. While this wasn’t such an enjoyable event to attend, it was the most helpful one I have gone to in Baruch and I highly recommend other students go as well. Even if it was on a Friday, it was worth going to SACC tutoring and take out some time from your day. I will for sure beattending more tutoring sessions in the future especially for finals and especially for a subject I have struggled with since the beginning of the semester.
Andrew Teigman Carrer Blog Post
On November 16th, 2017 I attended the Start up Fair by the Baruch Hillel in the MPR. There was kosher food as well as a panel of multiple entrepreneurs who were keen in the business world. There was ten companies most of them were from Israel and had experience in the tech and Venture Capitalist markets there. The Specific company Sportsguru was my favorite. I had a meaningful conversation with the founder after. I spoke to him about potential flaws in his business model and their target market. He was very serious and was curious about my feedback. He made me really explain my points and why he agreed/disagreed with them. This was a great opportunity for me to learn a lot as a new student. The leaders gave me different things to think about when approaching hard ship. Opposition is sometimes the key success. In order to really be successful hard work and a determination must be included. Life is compared to an EKG graph there are both up and downs. If one is constant no growth or decline you flatline. The business world outside in New York City is one that is extremely competitive. We being students of Baruch College and hopefully ambassadors of its values need to value ethics and hard work. The idea of upward mobility is no more relevant in any other college in the world. We need to use our resources and our education to transform the business sector and the political climate as whole. These were some of the strong lessons iI learned from the incredible speakers at the event. They gave me a sense of hope and excitement for the future and what it entails. I would like to thank Justin and Erin and FRO as a whole to make me broaden my horizons and learn some important great values.
