I was very lost in finding a club to begin the day off with. I went to the student center but all the rooms were switched. I literally just walked around the fourth floor until I found a club and walked in and it just happened to be the marketing club. To be Honest it was very boring and like it felt like a class rather than club which is okay . I learned that like Marketing is all about having connections and this club helps people who wants to pursue that field get connection . Also They said that the club was known like internationally as they are somehow linked to like an organization which i dont remember the name. The club also started talking about all these collaboration , marketing firm tends to have with like big companies like snickers . The club in a sense in my view felt very akward and like honestly as the time moved on the Ice broke and it started to get more interesting. I feel like going to a club to talk about a subject that doesnot interest you much then you get to view that subject and see if you really hate it or not. For some reason most of the people in marketing were previous accounting major which is weird, many of them say the change is that accounting is clear cut while if you want creativity then you go to marketing. They say psychology plays a big role in such a class and psychology is like a genuine interest because its like pretty new science that doesnot get the credit they really deserve. Marketing in a sense they said is about manipulating the mind to get people to buy youre product. The club tried to distinguish from other marketing club with them saying that they have all this connection compared to other clubs.
Fusion GIM
My Filipino friend suggested we attend Fusion’s interest meeting. I thought why not, they have food. When we walked in I could immediately tell that the people were very friendly. The eboard members had lots of charisma and such great personalities. Continue reading
VSA GIM# 2
I wasn’t sure about which club I wanted to go to at first. But at convocation, I saw a lot of different clubs. One of the first people I was talked to was the president from VSA. I went with a friend that had recently gone to their GIM# 1. When we sat down, a couple of people from the board came up to us and they were very friendly. All of the members were extremely outgoing and tried to get to know new people. The meeting was mostly talking about what VSA was and the different events. I found the events to be really interesting and something I would want to go to. One of the events was Pho night. I thought it would be really fun since that’s where everyone can talk outside a school setting. The games were interesting as well. One game was “find your family.” We were given an animal and had to find others with the same animal by using the noise made by that animal. It was a fun idea, even though it just turned out to be a lot of random noises. The rest of the games were mostly getting to know everyone. It was nice to see there were people that were sophomores and juniors as well. I felt overall, VSA was a club that I would be serious in pursuing because of the great atmosphere and people.
Baruch Investment Management Group
In a rush to the Baruch Traders Club, I came in to the Trading floor on time for the meeting. But on time was too late – people were hovering over each other to see the presentation, seats were swarmed by students, students were on top of each other. It was a mess.
At the Traders floors, looking for someone familiar. I noticed that the Baruch Traders Club meeting had already started next room, and I was at the wrong meeting. Investment Management Group was the club I was at, the room was full to the point where the representatives were starting to kick students out. Club member said anyone who didn’t have a seat had to leave the Traders floor. Hundreds of students looked concerned including me.
I stepped out with the rest of the students and saw that they were starting the presentations. “I ended up here for a reason,” I thought to myself. They told me I couldn’t come in, which increased my interest and I wasn’t going to let this opportunity slip. “No-one without a seat is allowed,” I heard the student say. I walked in to an office a few rooms down the Traders floor, and convinced the person sitting at the desk for a chair. I took the chair and walked straight in to the Traders floor, and pushed straight to the meeting. All the members who were at the club looked at me, I had broken the system. The rest of the meeting, I listened to the students who were talking about Investment management. They told me there would be a training and that not everyone would get in.
Met a few students from the club who were impressed by what I did. They saw that I was ambitious and that nothing could stop me when I put my mind to it.
I applied and submitted my resume last week, we’ll see what happens.
Blue Notes General Interest Meeting Blog Post
Hey everyone! On Thursday, August 31st I met with the Blue Notes of Baruch College at one of their interest meetings. I came in nervous since I’m aware that not everyone makes it on, but that quickly went away when I met most of the executive board and realized they are great people who are really welcoming to all the people interested even if those people don’t necessarily get on the team. They spoke about workshops that any and all can attend for the blue notes even if you aren’t on. The meeting got very entertaining when everyone, including the executive board, all spoke about who they were and what their favorite karaoke song was. As all of this was going on I was eating a bunch of cookies the leaders so generously offered and drinking some iced tea. We all got to talk a little bit about ourselves at some point briefly. Overall, I already felt like they were a wonderful group of people to be around and I honestly hope I see them more on campus. I don’t have a picture from the event, but ill give an illustration. A room full of kids at desks, picture me in the front, eating lots of cookies along with others eating lots of cookies. Thats probably all you need to see anyway so uh there you go. Thanks for reading!
Introduction to Confusion
I arrived at the FUSION GIM just in time for the explanation of the things they’ve done and the values they possess as a club. FUSION is a club dedicated to Filipino cultures and traditions. However, what had really intrigued me in the club was Confusion, the Filipino dance team. They showed us a video of play that showcased Filipino culture using different genres of dancing, including hip hop. I was at the interest meeting with a couple of my high school friends. At our school, we experienced SING!, which is a student produced musical that also features different modes of dancing that emphasize a theme. The video reminded us of our passion of hip hop dancing, and using dance as a form of communication to convey a message to the audience.
When I dance, I am brimming with energy and feel at home with fast tempo songs. So when they showcased a choreography to the upbeat song of Runaway Baby by Bruno Mars, my jaw dropped as I watched with awe that this was exactly what I had come for. My enthusiasm was welcomed dearly by one of the choreographers who allowed my friends and I to attend a rehearsal later that very day!
One of the many highlights of my day was stumbling upon the choreographer who was to teach that night, Rica (shown above). She introduced me to other club members, and encouraged me to reach out to her for more opportunities for hip-hop. At rehearsal, her unique and wavy style reminded me of the rush of pushing my boundaries and stepping outside of my comfort zone. My passion for hip-hop led me to those who shared the same interest and I was rewarded with the simple joy of dancing.
United Chinese Language Association Meeting
The first thing I looked for when I enter the room were acquaintances. New place, similar situation but still triggers the same nerves. Luckily, I did find what I was looking for and more. I found a couple of friends I have not seen for a couple of years. Some came just to take a picture for the Freshmen Seminar Blog, then that reminded to take one as well. It was nice to catch up with some old friends. Meeting new people is so much easier as a group of people, conversations move so much more smoothly, we learn more about each other this way. My nerves were pointless though, the upperclassmen were all great speakers and very friendly people who can simply make anyone felt welcome to the club. The executive board members introduced themselves, then broke up into networking groups. They all made their rounds, trying to recruit and obtain our interest, asking the same old questions: what years you are in, what is your major or intended major, and where you from. It was boring until I met people who were from the same high school as me, and then asked for mutual friends. I am bad at networking but I will need it in the future. Once introductions were over, it was time for ice breaker games. We played google feud, which was fun because I found the memers in the club and I enjoyed their responses and answers. Originally, I Just wanted to come to the meeting for the food, but sometime during the introductions and games the amount of people just grew and the food line was just way too long, estimating at 80 students lining up for some chinese food, so my friend and I just went out for food. Guess I will be going to this club now to see some of my good old friends.
Chinese Christian Fellowship
Baruch College has over one hundred and sixty clubs and organizations. Each club and organization has its own characteristics and develops different interests for students. Most Undergraduate Clubs meet on Thursdays from 12:40 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Chinese Christian Fellowship is one of those clubs and organizations. I got to the 10th floor early, but the general interest meeting of clubs hadn’t start yet. By chance, I got Chinese Christian Fellowship’s little publicity paper. At that time, I hadn’t decided which club to go to. I chatted with my friend when we had a round trip on the 10th floor. When we walked to Room 10-140, we found that the meeting was about time to begin. At that time, I walked into the room of CCF (Chinese Christian Fellowship). The people who stood in the front of the door were very nice and enthusiasm. They invited me in and sat down to have a look. I accepted their invitation and had a seat.
In the beginning, the president told us a cool joke to ease the atmosphere, but I thought he was trying to relieve his pressure. We began to line up for lunch. We made a prayer before we ate. The prayers said “Pray for food, pray for those who prepare food. Thank God for giving us food and keeping us all together. Amen.” When we were about to finish, the president walked over to everyone with garbage bag and said, “Have you finished? If you finish eating, you can throw the rubbish here.” By this action, he was so conscientious. The meeting probably had three major parts. Frist, play games. The game rule was if you lost, showed off your talent. After several rounds of competition, one man lost, and he began to sing. It was very fun. Second, sing. We started singing songs about Christian. Some songs, and even created by member of the club. Third, campus raiders. One member talked about the benefits that Baruch students had and the conditions at Baruch College. What’ more, prayer is the act of actively communicating with God or spiritual individuals to praise, pray, repent, or express one’s thoughts or visions. Knowing something about Christian is a good experience. And it is a good time to meet new friends and broaden one’s horizons.
CCF Club Meeting
Last Thursday, I attended the general interest meeting of Chinese Christian Fellowship with my friends at Baruch College. Before entering the room, I knew that it’s a Christian club. The first thought in my mind was that I couldn’t join it since I’m not a Christian. However, the club members explained to us that it’s not necessary to be a Christian. They invited us to the meeting to get more details. The meeting began with the introduction of the club, and it was the first highlight. The club members did a presentation on CCF’s background information and its main goal for the future. They said that they aim to spread Christianity to people, but not to force anyone to believe in this religion. After the introduction, we prayed and ate. The reason for praying is to speak to God in order to ask for help or give thanks. I think this is a good way to stay thankful and cherish all the things we have. Then, we played a game to get rid of the awkward atmosphere since most of people were new to the club and they didn’t get to know each other. There was punishment for the game. The one who lost the game was required to perform a show. Fortunately, I didn’t lose. The second highlight of the meeting was still a presentation, and it was all about the useful tips of how to survive at Baruch. In the end of the meeting, the President concluded that CCF is not only a club, but a family to all members. All the club members showed all their passion about improving the club and expressed their willingness to help. The meeting was a huge success, and the overall experience was pretty good. I am looking forward to the next meeting.
Student Life-CCF club blog post
A very nice CCF club member invited me to join their welcome party for potential members on the 10th floor on September 7, and I accepted. CCF stands for Chinese Christian Fellowship, but you don’t have to be a Christian to have fun with them. The welcome party was held in a regular classroom and everyone there was Chinese. The CCF club members introduced themselves one by one and gave us information about their club. They said they are here to provide a comfortable place for Chinese Christians and also educate non-Christians about God. Then, the club members served us free food. I remember there was chicken broccoli, fried rice, fried noodles, different kinds of soda, and some other Chinese dish. But, before we can eat the food, we prayed to God to show our gratitude, we prayed like any Christian before their meals, but in Chinese. I learned that giving thanks to God reminds us that everything comes from Him, so is food. Lord Jesus gave thanks to God when he fed five-thousand men with only five loaves of bread and two fishes, also his apostle Paul continued to do the tradition. After the eating, we played a very complicated Chinese game that I somehow managed to play because the instructions were in Chinese and my Chinese is terrible. Everyone had a lot of fun because the game was silly. After the game comes singing. We sang together about our Lord Jesus Christ and God, our Father. I think it was about God and our Lord loving us and bringing salvation to people in pain. I always thought Christians were serious white guys using water magic to repel demonic spirits that force their religion on others, but I was wrong. The CCF club members were awesome and funny people. Overall, I enjoyed the experience.
