About me…

Hey there! I’m Kelly Mo. I just turned 17 in March I was born and raised in Venezuela and share a Chinese background. I currently live with my oldest brother since my parents and my little sister are in Venezuela. I’ve been in New York for about a month only. I think that one of the biggest changes that I’ve faced ever since I came to New York is transportation, because when I was in my country I could drive and get anywhere easily.

I can speak three languages fluently: Spanish, Cantonese, and English. I like to play sports such as Volleyball, Soccer and Ping Pong. I do not like to speak much when I don’t know people, but once I get to know them better I become more talkative and fun, I suppose… I love to cook, anything western to Chinese. I’m a family lover, which means I rather spend time with them other than going out, I really miss my family. This will be my first year experiencing winter, I hope it’s fun. I love traveling; I want to go to Spain… I hope I can travel with my family and friends more often.

I like watching movies, but sometimes I have concentration problems and get distracted easily. In overall I think I’m a very nice person and you won’t regret meeting me…

paragraph about myself

Hi, My name is Angela and I’m from Queens. I’m excited to finally be in college. I feel like I have so much free time to do other things like for example, working on the days that I dont have school. This keeps me moving and productive throughout the week so I’m not just doing nothing. I would say my two passions are singing and dancing. I’ve loved them both since I was little and i definitely want to continue doing what I love in college.

Workshop #1

For this assignment I chose to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, located in 1000 5th Ave, New York. I went with my older brother. We  chose to go there because when we were searching for a destination, this museum looked the most appealing, which in the end, it wasn’t disappointing at all. The MMA is the largest museum in the United States. It is also one of the most visited museums in the world. The permanent collection consists of works of art from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt paintings, and sculptures from nearly all the European masters, and an extensive collection of American and modern art.

As we walked we analyzed the different type of painting and their possible hidden messages. It is very impressive how detailed and unique each of the painting were. As I continued walking I was wondering how were they so smart and talented, how they developed things that even we, modern humans, cannot or wouldn’t be able to do it without a machine.

In this place there were so many people crowded in the dark holding their phones and trying to take a picture. They were very careful because it wasn’t permitted to take pictures of the Saint Jerome in the Wilderness, an unfinished painting by Leonardo da Vinci with the flashlights on. I was shocked that they were actually no light pointing straight at the image because it would damage the quality of the painting.  The painting was made with such delicacy, which made it different from the others painting, this one gave a much deeper feeling since all you could see in the painting was the person suffering.

In the end, the visit to the museum made me learn so many things, I felt like if I was time traveling since there were so many different things from different places and era. I personally feel like visiting a museum is a beautiful experience because you learn about previous cultures and beliefs.

Enrichment Workshop 1

For my first enrichment workshop, I went to the Poster House which is actually very close to the campus and has free admission for everyone 18 and under which was a plus! What’s interesting about this museum is that it’s the first of its kind to be exclusively just for posters which I found intriguing as it is a underappreciated form of art.  It showed how many people throughout the earlier centuries used posters as a form of communication, propaganda, advertisements and for religious purposes. Upon further examination  of the posters, you can see that they are done with pastel like tools and crayons and from a distance it looks printed and almost too real for it to be hand drawn which was really insane! Only a select few were done by purely hand but a lot were sketched off by hand and later printed with new technologies and had applications of pastel on it. I went with one friend and me and him found these posters really cool and were even jealous of the skill it took to make these. I personally liked more of the modern ones and the religious ones made during the resnassiance era in France. The more modern ones had pictures of cities or towns that were easier for me to depict and enjoy the detail that went into it. Meanwhile the older ones were more open for interpretation as to what the painter was trying to get at and I found this really mind boggling. Overall though I liked the idea and the format the way this place was put together as we had to go into rooms to actually be in the galleries and it wasn’t all open floor ended.

Enrichment Workshop 1: Student Life

Straight after seminar class, me and a my friends decided we would attend a Latin Heritage Event that took place on the second floor for our first enrichment workshop. We got there early so we were lucky enough to be greeted with tamales before they ran out.  Coming from a Mexican household, tamales was not a new food that I would be trying but it was still interesting tasting tamales coming from different countries. They definitely differed in taste and the way that they were made which surprised me because they were nothing like the tamales that I ate at home. Tamales is a common Latin American food but it was nice seeing how different parts of the world prepare this popular food with their own unique style. One of the main highlights of that event was witnessing my friends try tamales for the first time ever. It was really funny seeing them try new food that I am accustomed to. It was interesting listening to their intakes and opinions on tamales, all while comparing it to similar foods from their culture and household. We talked about our cultures foods and I was shocked when one of my friends said that they really didn’t enjoy the tamales as much as they would have liked to. The overall setting of the event was really welcoming along with our fellow Baruch students that participated in organizing the events. One particular aspect that caught my eye immediately was the arrangement of all the Latin American country flags by the event. I recall spotting my country’s flag along with the many others that were hung which was a nice thing to see. Overall I would say this was an amazing experience that I was fortunate enough to experience early on in college and it was nice seeing that there’s a lot of Baruch students that share the same culture as I do.

Weekly Reflection #2

Hi everyone! I am Andres. I was raised and lived most of my life in Ecuador (South America), my family still lives there but they come every couple months to visit me and see how I am doing, mostly because I live by myself.

So I  finished high school in a German school back in Ecuador and until recently I did not know what I wanted to do with my life at all. Right after I had finished school, a group of friends and me decided that before we went to college we needed to be sure of what we wanted to do, so we took a sabbatical year in Europe, with our main headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany (this is the city where most of my friends study at the moment).

Being able to travel with my friends for over a year was truly the best experience Ive had. We meet many new people from every corner of the world, visited many cities, learned new languages, partied and experienced so much that by the end I felt that not only had my knowledge been broadened but that I was a different person in a way. I finally had a path to follow in life as well.

During this time I decided that I wanted to study International Business. Even though I love Europe I am sure that the best city in the world to pursue this career is New York, so I am really grateful to be here at Baruch now. I am really looking forward to have a great year and to get to know you guys!

Weekly Reflection #1

This week has been quite good. I have met many new people and the classes are interesting. The FYS class of this past week was very helpful for it was a great aid in finding some of the different departments Baruch has to offer. We also talked about academic integrity and the rules and responsibilities we have as students. I feel I have started to adapt more to the Baruch environment and schedule overall. The first days I had a bit of difficulty figuring out what train I should take to arrive in time to my classes but it has been getting easier with every passing day.

Weekly Reflection #3

I was very curious of the option to travel abroad for a semester when the representative from that department came in to talk to the class. It did seem like a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore a different country’s culture while still keeping up with my studies. However I am on the fence about whether I should try at all for this program as the expense for it does not seem appealing to me. I do not get financial aid so I would have to take out a loan for this trip and I am hesitant to spend more money than necessary for my degree.  The Honors Program was also a matter that I took interest in as I did not apply through the traditional way but I do not know if I can maintain the standards of the Honors Program academically but I believe there was some sort of monetary assistance for being in the program which is certainly a form of encouragement to keep my grades as high as possible.

Club Fair

I explored the Club Fair at Baruch College as it had piqued my interest on what this college offered as an extracurricular activity. Unfortunately, I did not take a picture because I did not know we needed one until days after the club fair had ended. However I will describe the fair to my best extent to paint a picture of this event. The fair took place in the basketball gym tot the left and it was packed with numerous students. In fact it was extremely difficult to maneuver through the horde of people that wanted to see what clubs Baruch had. There was also numerous people promoting their specific club through handouts, summaries, free promotional items, and more. Certain clubs also offered different types of foods and drinks to interest people in their  club. The club desks were arranged in the middle and around the walls of the gym and a map of each club desk, which was also color coordinated depending on the clubs theme and numbered, was given to each student before entering the gym to easily navigate the area. I signed up for the Archery Club as it looked like an opportunity to learn a new skill.  One of the members had brought in their personal bow to use as a model but explained the difference in weight of their personal bow and the rental ones. The archer also explained the weight of pulling the bowstring and other interesting facts. I only signed up for the Archery Club because it was becoming uncomfortable moving through the so much people and because the other clubs did not interest me enough to give them a closer look.

Enrichment Workshop #1 Academic Workshop

The Houdini Museum is about an escape artist named Harry Houdini. I went to the museum today after class with friends. Since this enrichment workshop is a mandatory assignment for all freshmen I met up with friends and we went together. I choose this museum because it was the closest one to school. All my friends end class around the same time so we just went together. The museum was pretty small and hard to navigate because it was hidden in a building on a different floor. It was interesting because it’s not like the normal museums we usually go to such as the Museum of Modern Art, or the Museum ofNatural History. This was my second choice of museum to go to because the Museum of Modern Art or the MOMA was temporarily closed due to renovation and redecoration purposes. At the Houdini Museum, we saw many many artifacts and photographs from Houdini’s time. For example, there was Houdini’s escape coffin in which he was able to escape from a coffin sealed with six inch nails under him. Moreover, we were able to see the infamous handcuffs that he is known to have escaped from with his tiny hands. There were also costumes, stage props and other artifacts from Houdini’s personal magic tricks in addition to the original bust from his grave which was very interesting. We took pictures at the museum and I didn’t post on my instagram because they weren’t that great. I don’t think anyone can look good after a long day of classes so that explains why my face is crossed out. This assignment didn’t really help me with my transition from high school to college. The only thing I have trouble with right now is time management and being forced to go to a museum to take a picture of myself at that museum is only taking away from time that should be spent writing my essay.
