Writing II HMWG

Remix Proposal

I want to remix the research project I completed in English class for my assignment. Black African Americans was the topic I was writing about in my research project.  I am concerning the African American community including mass incarceration, racial discrimination, gang violence and depression. I am making a presentation on visualizing images of Black struggle throughout America and the mass incarceration. My audience would be everyone who thinks Black struggle is not a thing and has no influence on America. Black Struggle gets a lot of backlash because it is said to be dramatic and not as big off a problem as it is claimed to be. I will use images to show what I mean and the process of the explanation of the subject. I will summarize and add a media at the end to spark a connection to a real life situation.

Here and my friend and I share our last moments before he went off to the army. We always been good friends and we were talking and eating together having conversations about life. Great times like this is what I live for. We were caught off guard here and the picture came out better than anticipated. I slightly edited this photo to make it low light because it was too light at first. Keeping it saturated and the lighting good throughout the whole picture.

I enlisted the cooperation of my friends for this experiment, asking them to do their best to stay unbiased and neutral. My vocal summary helped me realize that I was on the correct track so far in trying to meet the paper’s question. When I read my document aloud, I spotted language errors and when things don’t make sense. I could also notice any continuous sentences and be able to avoid them in my paper. My friends believes I might reinforce my thesis by including additional examples of music or other forms of media. That was something I intended to accomplish.

There were numerous talks on the previous president and its influence on African Americans in the article “Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and the Limits of Representation.” The writer talked about how Kamala Harris’ nomination was surprising. President Biden has a history of criminalizing black people and supporting policies that harm blacks. Harris’s status as a vice president is critical in terms of Black women’s representation in the United States. They are one of the most downtrodden groups, with fewer than half of the population living in poverty. Furthermore, the piece raises an interesting topic of whether things will genuinely change.

Blog 6 J. Cole Proposal

Cole is always known for acknowledging social and political music through his work and music, which makes his music so likable and relatable by a huge audience. At the end of the year  his fourth studio album “4 Your Eyez Only” was released on December 9, 2016 during the cold winter, and it wasn’t quite what fans were expecting at first. The album took another approach on J. Cole’s perspective that was never seen before, it gave a gloomy and cynical vibe that was unlike the artist. The album explores a variety of topics concerning the African American community including mass incarceration, racial discrimination, gang violence and depression. The album also touches on other topics such as love and fatherhood.

 J. Cole took this album to really sit us down and touch upon neglected issues in our society today.

Art Piece: “Untitled” by David Wojnarowicz

He employs a variety of rhetorical qualities to convey its message. One notable feature was his use of a photograph of himself. When you hear him state all of these things, he links it all together by suggesting he will be subjected to this maltreatment in a few years. This child is smiling with his screwed up teeth, white and black box button up, as if it’s a foreshadow. Furthermore, he has the phrases neatly covering the exterior layer of his body, attempting to maintain his image. Ultimately, the image was created in black and white, despite the fact that color was already available at the time.

This image pertains to and speaks about a social and political situation that existed at the time. The story describes how this young boy’s life will begin and end. This picture was created to raise awareness about homosexual prejudice. It even describes internal government oppression. “This youngster will lose his constitutional rights against private invasion by the government.” It also depicts how, as a result of society’s harm, he will be driven to commit suicide. He was being pursued because he was himself.

This photograph leads me to the idea that art is timeless. Due to the black and white photograph of the child, I’m thinking this image is many, if not decades old. Furthermore, the situation in which this photograph was created is still relevant today. Many homosexual men are still assassinated, oppressed, and victimized as a result of their sexuality. Even in the United States, homosexual marriage is still illegal in many regions, and being gay may land you in jail in other nations.

I’m going over my essay for the sentence analysis. A couple things struck me. For example, I’ve noticed that my transitional words have improved and that I’m simply missing transition sentences. Instead of continuing these lines and cramming too much information into one, it would be better to break them up into separate sentences. Another thing I’ve noticed is that I try to squeeze a lot of information into a single line. I accomplish this by overusing commas. It’s fine to utilize these to convey a certain message, but overusing them is bad for both the reader and the writer. While I want to give the essay a more sophisticated look by employing better sentence structure, I still want my voice to remain the dominant point of view, so I’ll preserve that.

Jordan’s criticism of the following sentence reflects how it is intended. Meaning, even though it is worded one way, it means something completely other when. Words have a significant impact on meaning and how it is communicated. “Standard (white) English,” as discussed in the text, is forceful and political. Such things can be conveyed in one way, but the underlying meaning is obscured. The Vietnam War is brought up as an example of the US being selfless. When it wasn’t exactly like that, it meant placing their needs and best interests ahead of our own. In the United States, which is where word play comes in, they were not being selfless; in reality, they were assisting in the process.

I believe she means that the real issue isn’t whether black or white English people are more powerful in America. She claims that all of the white people in power in the country speak the same standard white English. White English is regarded as “standard,” whereas black English is regarded as “broken” or “not real English.” I’m not sure why there’s a distinction made between white and black English when white individuals aren’t deemed to be speaking appropriate English while conversing with a British person. In America, black people are seen as second-class citizens whereas white people are regarded as the most important. All of this, I feel, boils down to money. You only have a limited amount of time.

Neoliberalism

The Bronx is a huge multicultural borough in my city and it is where I am from. The Bronx is mainly known for its middle class and predominantly filled with people of color. I have seen some type of Neoliberalism in my borough over the last few years of my life and in reality it is mainly small businesses in the community. Rent recently has been increased which are pushing many people of color out side of the community and leaving room for newer upper class people to come in. The small businesses in the community are often let alone and all my life up until now I am seeing that they are all being gentrified with bigger corporations. In my area there used to be a lot of pawn shops and small convince stores but I have been seeing recently more and more stores like “Macys” and “Best Buy” or newer fast foods like “Peachwave” which is a soft served ice cream place compared to the minority “Mr softee” seen everywhere else. This could be due to modernization but the new businesses are predominantly upperclass and which my area is mainly middle class citizens. The businesses are often left for rent or even empty for a couple of months but then later on they are replaced with a newer and more known companies. I can compare this to Dickinson’s argument about graffiti and how it is bad for the society when in reality there isn’t any rational reason or problem it is causing to society. The same with all these organizations that are coming into the society that aren’t causing harm but yet modernizing the area into something new. Is it really bad? or is it something that is normal into future upcoming changes for the borough.
