Art Piece: “Untitled” by David Wojnarowicz

He employs a variety of rhetorical qualities to convey its message. One notable feature was his use of a photograph of himself. When you hear him state all of these things, he links it all together by suggesting he will be subjected to this maltreatment in a few years. This child is smiling with his screwed up teeth, white and black box button up, as if it’s a foreshadow. Furthermore, he has the phrases neatly covering the exterior layer of his body, attempting to maintain his image. Ultimately, the image was created in black and white, despite the fact that color was already available at the time.

This image pertains to and speaks about a social and political situation that existed at the time. The story describes how this young boy’s life will begin and end. This picture was created to raise awareness about homosexual prejudice. It even describes internal government oppression. “This youngster will lose his constitutional rights against private invasion by the government.” It also depicts how, as a result of society’s harm, he will be driven to commit suicide. He was being pursued because he was himself.

This photograph leads me to the idea that art is timeless. Due to the black and white photograph of the child, I’m thinking this image is many, if not decades old. Furthermore, the situation in which this photograph was created is still relevant today. Many homosexual men are still assassinated, oppressed, and victimized as a result of their sexuality. Even in the United States, homosexual marriage is still illegal in many regions, and being gay may land you in jail in other nations.

  1. This piece “Untitled” by David Wojnarowicz has rhetorical properties that contributed to its meaning. The image of the boy with wording letters behind him can imagine that this picture should be spoken and heard. Discrimination can be empathize here by telling us that the world should be getting better for juts an individual. It just causes one individual to feel small and everything around them should be improve.
  2. This piece resonates with social issues within today. By organizing this young boy’s life just by taking look at society and how’s everyone contributing to one another. His life is depend on what the government or anyone who is leading depends on how he should live it. His sexuality depends on the future which people now at days don’t find his sexually as a important place in society which would make him feel small and unimportant. The wording behind him is describing the darkness that’s he’s going to feel because of who he wants to be loved by or love to. Other individuals may feel threaten of him or fear him or want to fix him by just being who he’s.
  3. The conclusion that I can draw from this text is being who you are depends on your future and how society would look at you small or big. It just depends on you and how society is and it’s sad because society can be cruel within the people as well. Being honest to just yourself can be risky because you may not know who’s going to be affected by it by just being yourself.

Art Piece: David Wojnarowicz “Untitled”

  1. The reason I picked “Untitled” by David Wojnarowicz is that it represents a social issue just like other social issues in today’s age and day. In this artwork, we are shown a very young boy in the middle of the image. There is an article in the background of the boy which seems to be describing the outcome of this boy’s life.  As if it is depicting a real-life situation.
  2. “Untitled” like mentioned before relates and speaks about a social issue and a political issue certainly during this time era. The article speaks about how the life of this young boy will start and finish. This image was made to raise awareness for the discrimination of homosexuals. It even describes the persecution from the own government.” This kid will lose his constitutional rights against the government’s invasion of his privacy”. It also describes how he will be forced to commit suicide from all the damage done by society. He was being targeted for being himself.
  3. Artwork can be shown to spread propaganda and fear amongst people. But the artwork is also shown to spread political and social issues. They can be used to spread a positive image to raise awareness to create equality for all gender, sexual orientations, race, etc…

The piece “Untitled” by David Wojnarowicz uses rhetorical properties to contribute to it’s meaning . Such as the way he centered a little boy in the middle of the text, letting us know that this text will be something about a little boy. The picture of the boy is black and white but the way his features and hair texture is, makes me realize this is a white boy. This text resonates with social concerns today because the main idea of this article is that saying this little boy as he grows up will have a lot of issues in society the day he opens up about being with another male. This issue is still present today because many males who are in the LGBTQ community go through problems on a day to day basis. Using the right rhetorical properties in texts allow readers to understand what’s going on and it’s severity. For example, in this text the author says a lot of negative things may happen when he grow up and decides to come out of the closet. Therefore, someone who may read this that’s in the same situation may cause fear.

  1. I decided to pick David Wojnarowicz’s picture “Untitled.” The piece’s rhetorical properties contribute to its overall meaning in multiple ways. In black and white color, in the middle of the picture is a young boy. Wrapping the boy is a large paragraph that has an overall strong meaning about his future towards the picture. The image of the boy looks like a black and white photograph, and not necessarily a drawing, which adds to the realism of the artifact.

2. Within the picture called “Untitled” the text definitely relates to social and political concerns of the present. The text is describing many bad things that are bound to happen to this boy, ranging from being beaten, being discriminated against, families turning against this boy, and much more. Within the end, it is revealed that all these things may happen to this boy because he desires to be in love with another man. Relating to the social and political concerns of the present, many people discriminate against all types of people within the LGBTQ  community, even to this day. The LGBTQ even had to fight hard to even legalize gay marriage. There have been times when being gay gets you targeted and hated against. The struggles people within the LGBTQ community face are all within these texts, expressed through the future of this innocent boy.

3. Drawing a conclusion from this art, it is evident that art can have a heavy impact on social and political concerns. People use art or cartoons to convey messages that are harder to convey through words. The art itself could express more emotion and think than any written article. Hence why people use art like this to sort of emphasizing the importance of certain social concerns. Specifically with this concern, the treatment of people from the LGBTQ community.

  1. The author makes great use of rhetorical properties to portray his message and also give the viewer room to interpret their own meaning for the art. Already before reading it, you can see a picture of a kid with a half smile, in the very center with lines of words surrounding him. I believed that this was meant to symbolize the kid being the center of attention. The half smile being shown on the kid, along with the image being in black and white, gives it a dark feeling. Also, the author repeats the words ‘One day’ which is clearly purposely done to make certain aspects of his writing stand out.
  2. This text resonates with the social and political concerns of today. Generally, the text in this art talks about a kid battling his way through diversity when all odds are against him. Today, there are people who are put in disadvantages through choices made by people with power.
  3. The conclusions that I can make from this text to build an argument for what impact art might make on political or social concerns, is that it contains a powerful message that is being expressed by some minorities that wouldn’t be able to be heard otherwise.

1.) There are many rhetorical properties to this image that contribute to its meaning. The color and design play a big part, such as the black and white color scheme. This gives it a really old and dreadful tone to me, having the kid smile in the middle with text around him added to the dreadfulness. Even before I looked at what the text said, I knew this image would have some dark undertone behind it.

2.) The image revolves around homophobia, which is still present today. Millions of LGBTQ+ people are oppressed and pushed away just for their sexuality. The world has slowly changed but homophobia is still an issue. In the 20th century, many laws and policies were put in place to punish those who were Lgbtq+. Many gay men were sent to conversion therapy and subjected to shock therapy too. This was a horrible era in the 20th century, due to homophobia many southern states would pass and support these homophobic policies.

3.) The conclusion I can draw from this image is that art is timeless. I’m guessing this image is several if not decades years old, due to the black and white image of the kid. Furthermore, the context behind this image still applies today. There are many gay men that are still killed, oppressed, and more due to their sexuality. There are many places even in the United States where gay marriage is still illegal, and in other countries you can go to jail for being gay.

“Untitled” David Wajnarowicz

This piece of art has qualities that that emphasize and help contribute to the deep meaning of it. The perspective of it is one . We can see a boy in the center surrounded by sentences.  We see the boy with a big smile showing teeth and we picture innocence. What also helps is the fact that each sentence starts with “One day “. It is repetitive and emphasizes that it is important , its a pattern throughout the piece of art that attempts to create a certain view. The whole design of it also brings it together. Placing the image of child in the middle and being surrounded by words just help demonstrate  his situation. Him being himself caused a havoc throughout his future he had to endure.

This text resonates with the the homophobic society and political norms. Now in the present day we see less of this being a issue. But at one point in time being gay and having a different sexual preference was seen as such a crime. Just because it was not “traditional” to certain people it became to be very sad to see the outcome of what tragic situations they were put through. People lived in fear and had to endure a various of detrimental situation as said in the text.

The impact of the piece is to portray the innocence of what it is but to bring attention to the issue.  This is for a wide audience to be able to understand and get the gist of how things were for a persons life back then when it was no where accepted.

Adrian Piper “Decide Who You Are, Anita Hill”

This piece’s rhetorical properties such as the red and overwhelming amount of words on the page already stand out and contribute to the overall meaning. I can infer that this piece of art is relevant to the feeling of not belonging and being discriminated against. The African American little girl in the center of the piece and smiling with all of her teeth adds depth to the tone. The little girl looks so innocent yet all these phrases and words get thrown at her and she is still smiling and getting through. For some reason, with all the words filling up the piece, what pops out is the black and white image of the young girl. I wonder if the artist intentionally did that. This piece resonates with the social concerns of the present because it shows that in the society we live in today, young African American kids are growing up thinking that they are in the wrong and that the moment they were born, this is the reality they live in. It sets this norm that indifference in humankind and race is not okay. In political aspects, this shows that even though there are reforms made, there are not enough because the education system and younger generations still experience this. I can conclude through this piece that there are a ton of reinforcements and laws that still need to be passed to ensure that equality is served. Discrimination, hatred, racism still exist today and through art, people can express topics like these in a much easier way to grasp. This is the power of art.

The piece of art I choose was David Wojnarowicz  “Untitled”

  1. He uses a multitude of rhetorical properties that attribute to its meaning. One major thing was his choice of using a picture of himself. When you hear him mention all these things and in the end he ties all together with saying he will receive this mistreatment in a few years. Sort of a foreshadow, yet this kid is smiling with his messed up teeth, white and black box button up. In addition, he has the words perfectly covering the outer layer of his body, trying not to mess with the image of himself. Finally, the picture was done in black and white even though color was already around at the time of this. I feel as if he did this on purpose to give the reader a more bland feeling, easily being able to focus on something no distractions unless done on purpose.
  2. This text purposely speaks on the issue of homophobia and how innocents being gay actually is. Initially its just a child, who plays and makes mistakes loved unconditionally and simply because of his desires he is viewed in a complete different light. So because it was against the norm he was being punished similarly to disproportioned communities. Of course the major community being the LQBTQ  same sex marriage is now here but still are being perpetuated and have hate crimes against them. Simply because of their preference.
  3. Art can simply change everyone’s perspective on a political issue. When dealing with this you must think of how a depiction of something persuades someone, If you see the picture of the consequences of police brutality, or a man kneeling on another neck of your same race. You feel anger or any type of very strong emotion, resulting in a shifted perspective on something
