FINAL REFLECTION

I have learned a lot this semester from my incredible, amazing and fabulous English 2150 professor. I think one of the most important things I have learned is about using my sources in a way that benefits my essay the most. As for realizations, I made this one during my 11th grade high school year, that when I was older I wanted to become a sports journalist. This makes me put an extra emphasis on trying to get as much as I can from my English professors, even if it just means reading feedback on an essay. I think I developed in my writing for longevity. The research based assignment helped with my work in COM1010, as you need to research for your speeches in that class. I worked on writing a lot this semester, mostly on my own away from the class work. I started writing for The Ticker, in the sports section, and felt that my articles I put into that sounded pretty good.

One piece of work I am particularly proud of on Blogs@Baruch is my 10 point program. I feel that these “demands” I have written down for that are very important and would benefit the entire society of NYC if they were all true. Knowing the backstory behind the original 10 point program makes it a truly interesting subject. As for developing a style and getting “in my zone”, I feel that only happens when I am writing about sports. I find myself getting in such a groove where I can sit and write articles that are up to a thousand words long just because I am bored and in my free time.

One piece of writing that was particularly challenging for me had to be the Project 1 on BPP and BLM. Over the years I never really looked into BLM much as an organization. Obviously I knew about it and the deaths and the movement but I never thought of looking into too much. So, learning about all the specific information on the BLM movement really opened my eyes into the subject and finally truly understood everything as a whole. I am glad that I have this knowledge now as I continue to go on with life.

I also just wanted to say thank you for a great semester, Professor, you have definitely been one of my best english teachers over the years. Have a good summer!

7 day log kinda

I did not do the 7 day log when I was beginning work on Wikipedia so instead of doing that and lying about it here is a description of my experience with Wikipedia.

Wikipedia was not such a user-friendly site to adventure through during my first couple of days on it. I was struggling to find a place to start at, which came easier over time but it still took me a while to figure out where to begin. Once I started my editing it ran smoothly from there. Every once and a while I would experience an issue with the speed of the website. It seems a bit outdated when it comes to editing, and I would’ve thought that one of the biggest and known sites of all time would be easier to pick up and use.

I made discoveries along the way which helped my understanding of gender bias as a whole. While I explored Wikipedia I came across many pages of women who were notable that should have had more information on them. I compared these to those of men who had similar roles in history and the differences are drastic. These men who might have even done less in society to make a difference for hundreds of years into the future as these women have more information written about them. This was a crazy realization, before doing this project I had absolutely no idea about this gender bias which takes place on one of the most used websites of all time.

Once I did my research and got my information together on my woman in red, Vivian Lucille Pierce, I began writing in the style which Wikipedia articles are written in. Starting with stories about her early life and personal information and then moving into the middle stages of her life. This part includes the things that Pierce should be known for, she was a fierce fighter and advocate for women’s suffrage. The rest of the Wikipedia adventure was smooth from there on, not too many problems did occur.

What Does Your Hairstyle Say About You?

My hairstyle is very loud, so I believe it says a lot about me as a person. Obviously, I rock the mullet, bringing it back from its glory days in the 80s. I really wish sometimes I could have grown up back then. As much as I love my phone and playing video games on my PS5, the stories my dad tells me from the 80s are priceless. He tells me that they would go outside and play hockey, baseball, kickball and other games literally all day. I would much rather prefer this than sitting inside all day and gaming.

I think that mullets have a bad reputation in society now, but I hate when generalizations are made about a whole group of people with no facts. People say that if you have a mullet you’re most likely a racist redneck from the south, or something along the lines of that. But that does not describe me at all, I ain’t no cowboy and certainly am not racist by any means.

I grew up loving two sports, which I still love to this day, hockey and baseball. I still play baseball but gave up hockey back in middle school, even though I regret that decision. The mullet is definitely a hockey haircut, but it has come over to baseball in recent years. Anyways, I love my haircut and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Creative Remix Reflection

My decision to use project 2 instead of project 1 when doing my creative remix project was an easy one for me. Feminism and wanting women and men to be equal is something I try and always stand up for, so when the choice was given it was quick. I found out information on the woman in red I chose, Vivian Lucille Pierce by looking up her name on google. I only really came across one or two websites which had any relevant information for what I needed. But the information from these sites was enough to be able to know about the life of Pierce.

I believe using a presentation on slides or powerpoint is a much more effective method of spreading your information to the audience. The attention span of college students nowadays has been depleted almost to extinction, every couple of minutes they look down to their phone and stop paying attention. With this being known, the best way to grasp the attention of the audience is with a slides presentation. Instead of just delivering an essay or written piece verbally to the audience. I personally am in this group of people who have trouble paying attention to straight lectures so when there is something I can look at on the screen it makes it much easier to gain knowledge from it. The use of this multimedia format rather than just a written essay is beneficial to the effective spread of information from presenter to audience.

The choice to use slides for this project was easy because of how accustomed I am to the program. Now, originally I was going to use powerpoint, a program I have been using since elementary school. But due to technology complications I was forced to use Google Slides, which unfortunately does not have the same creative capabilities as powerpoint. I tried my best to customize the presentation but there really isn’t much you could do on Slides. To add to this issue the fact that Vivian Lucille Pierce has a whopping total of one photo of her on google, which I am not even completely sure is a picture of her. This did not help my goal of creating an immersive presentation to teach my audience about the women in red I chose. Regardless, I tried to make it look as good as I could, using one of the few ‘themes’ on Google Slides to make it look a little better on the eyes than just a plain white and black slideshow.

Sharing my work in a public venue beyond the classroom would require much more work and understanding of the topic. I am assuming that a public venue beyond the classroom would imply that we are pretending I would be giving this presentation to a group of people who have no clue about the project or information I am sharing with them. If this is the case then I feel that I am pretty confident that with my topic and slideshow, I could give a good presentation. With showing off a presentation like this to people that have not a clue what is being discussed beforehand, it is good to be on top of background information even not shared on the slideshow. This will make you look like you’re very fine tuned with the information on the topic and in their eyes see you as a viable source of information. If these people do not see you as a trustable source, or if you seem like you have no idea what you are talking about then it would be hard to garner the attention of every person in the audience for the length of the presentation.

The knowledge I have gained from this class over the semester as well as ENG 2100, and my previous high school classes helped greatly with the way I am able to write and finish these projects.

Project 3 Proposal

For project three I will be working alone. I will be reimagining project 2 with a new medium, I will be doing a slide show. I will be focusing on the life of my woman in red I chose, which is Vivian Lucille Pierce. Through my slideshow I will be diving deeper into her life story and explain how she should be getting the respect which she unfairly does not gain from wikipedia.

I anticipate the change in medium to have a positive effect on delivering the message of her life. I feel as though nowadays our generation and people in general have a much smaller attention span. So, explaining and showing her life within a slideshow with pictures would increase the amount of support or attention it will gain than just an essay. For new material I will be getting images for different subjects which describes Pierces life. I chose this medium because I felt that it would be good to showcase how her life transitioned from her youth to when she was older.

The Man Who Armed The Panthers – Film Review

This was an interesting and informative video on a man, Richard Aoki, who was an original member of the Black Panthers. Aoki was also and FBI informant, which was obviously unknown to the rest of the Black Panther Party members. He was the one who got the guns to the Black Panthers, the video questions the fact that maybe the FBI could have been involved in arming the Panthers. Which I don’t think is such an abstract concept, as conspiracy theories of the FBI doing bad things to create an end result that is optimal for them have gone around for years. The FBI could have used Aoki to get an “in” on the party, use him to arm them and supply them with weapons in the hopes that they would use those weapons just so the police/FBI could use weapons back on them. This would make it not look like they were doing such harsh things and to save their reputation from the crowd that wasn’t involved with the actual party or living in Oakland. The FBI would totally be capable of doing that and getting away with it as they are some of the highest officers of the law in the country. As the video goes on, it explains how the FBI covered up that Aoki was even used to gain access to the inside of the Black Panthers. They still have not released any of the files that they had on Aoki, to this day. Sadly, Aoki committed suicide in 2007.

Judas and the Black Messiah Review

This movie showcased had a roller coaster of emotional feelings throughout it, I thought it was an excellent film with great actors who truly showcased how it was like living in this era in time. My initial reaction on the ending of it was shock of how easily they can get away with doing such horrible things to the Black Panthers and others. Emotionally I was feeling very sad and bad for the Black Panthers, all they wanted was for themselves and their families to have better lives while being treated fairly by everyone but instead they had to fight and be killed for it. The BPP had to deal with so much adversity from almost everybody that wasn’t standing with them for their cause, which led to the amount of fights that are shown in the movie and that happened in real life. The Black Panther Party wanted to be treated as equals to everyone else and were keen on their self defense from the police brutality.

Interview Questions

Hello everyone, my name is Joseph Bello and I am a freshman here at Baruch. I am majoring in Journalism and love to write about sports but mainly hockey and baseball. The interview question I will be answering is: “What do you consider to be the greatest threat to your happiness?” I think the greatest threat to my happiness is myself. I find myself to overthink a lot, which causes me to go through stages where I aren’t as happy as I would like to be. While most of the time I am a very happy person, every once and a while I think way too much about stuff I have to do, etc. Which leads to me getting stressed out or unhappy.

I talked to Adam Mapoy in class, we didn’t ask each other interview questions but instead talked about our lives at home and leading up to college. He grew up in upstate NY and I found that we had many similarities in our childhoods. We both were big into sports, and also found that upstate Ny is similar to Long Island when it comes to high school sports. He was a big fan of basketball and playing it when he was growing up, while I am huge into and playing baseball.
