The Role of Compassion in the Classroom

September 22, 2022 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm EDT

Data from CTL’s COVID-19 Student Experience Survey, a longitudinal study dating back to Spring 2020, show that a significant percentage of Baruch students report mental health challenges and struggle to find a sense of belonging and community in their college experience. Many students express an increased need for empathy and understanding from their instructor. Yet, some faculty may have questions on how to approach this when they have to balance content coverage, and/or feel unprepared without a therapeutic background. In this working session, we will take steps to see how we can infuse more care, compassion, and concern for students into our courses. Focus will particularly be placed on how we might improve students’ sense of connectedness to us as instructors, but also to other students, as well as to academic and emotional support services at Baruch College.
