The first job I ever had was a life changing experience for me. In the summer of 2009, I worked at a nursing home / rehabilitation center. At first I wasn’t thrilled about the job but since it was close to my house I decided to take it. I expected it to be a boring and annoying job considering I would have to deal with the elderly all day. Before working at this job, I had this notion of how the elderly were just grumpy and mean to everyone but after working at the nursing home my perspective completely changed.
My job at the nursing home was to keep the elderly company by talking to them, playing games with them, running errands with them and much more. My first day on the job, I remember baking with them and I had an amazing time. Everyone was really friendly and talkative. It was unexpected for me to enjoy myself so much especially when I went into the job with such a negative impression of what working there would be like.
Everyday we would do something different with the elderly which made my experience even better. I especially enjoyed talking one on one with them because I got a chance to know them personally. I met people who were World War II veterans, Vietnam War veterans and models. I learned so much from them through their stories and personal life experiences and lessons that they’ve shared with me. They had so much advice to give and so many stories to tell that there wasn’t a day that I was bored when I worked.
The best part about working was I never saw it as work because I had so much fun. Work was actually a place where I could relax and not have a care in the world. From working at a nursing home, I’ve come to appreciate the elderly a lot more.
