Community Service Self Evaluation

Light the Night- Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

1. My community service work helped the community because I was a volunteer at Light the Night which is an event to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society so they can find a cure and battle blood cancer.
2. I was a bit reluctant when I heard that I would have to take part in community service.
3. Giving my time and energy to others definitely encouraged me because I felt like I was doing something worthwhile not only for the community, but for those who were suffering and struggling in their day to day lives.
4. I learned that I need more patience than I was willing to admit; I also learned that all the people around me who were organizing the event were very dedicated to the project which was very inspirational. I also realized that the Brooklyn Bridge was a prime location to have a walk and it was especially beautiful at night.
5. The most difficult part of the whole night for me was the fact that I had to stand in one location holding signs throughout the whole night. It was a bit difficult because after a while, I got kind of bored and it was windy as well. I realized that no matter what I was expected to do, no matter how big or small, I should wholeheartedly put all of my effort into that specific task without complaining.
6. Engaging in this project relates to my education because in Philosophy I learned that morality rests on moral sentiment in which benevolence and sympathy is a factor. Being a good person relies on moral sentiment. By taking part in this event, I was able to support and identify with those who were walking to save lives; this is why community service is so important. Also, it has taught me that fighting for certain causes and issues in society is worthwhile and the results that come about through our efforts are incomprehensible.
7. The “Leadership and Service” session emphasized the fact that leaders should be willing to serve others in order to be good leaders. The community service was an example of how we put that statement into practice.
8. My experience taught me that I cannot expect something in return from the community if I do not contribute any of my valuable time, energy, or skill into the community. Also, if I step into someone else’s shoes and empathize with them, I am more likely to identify with them and take up their cause.
9. My experience has given me a sense of satisfaction because I did something useful and productive with my time, energy, and effort. Also, I realized that I should be so grateful that I am alive and living a healthy life while many others aren’t so lucky.
10. I was extremely satisfied with my experience because even though I am only one person, I was able to make a difference.
11. The opportunity to serve in the community helped me understand that many things can be accomplished when people are united in one cause and work toward a particular goal. This is why I intend to keep on doing this in both my years at college and later on in life.
12. “Vinita Johnson Walks for a Cure!”
