Reflection – 12/5/11 – Phil Kubiak
College. It’s here, and the first semester is coming to an end. This is nuts.
Baruch College is not quite what I thought it would be, but who knows if it’s in a bad or good way? So what if its not 100% what I expected, its important that I’m here and I’m doing my work and I’m getting an education from a reputable school, and for that reason, I am just fine here at Baruch. The city is great, too. It never gets old.
My first semester at Baruch College went pretty well academically, maybe not as well as I wanted it to go but there is room for improvement. I definitely learned A LOT about how to manage my time in college this first semester. I learned A LOT about what I have to do to do well in certain classes. I haven’t done all of this my first semester, but that’s why I’m really looking forward to getting my finals done with, having a long break, and getting a fresh start next semester.
If I could do it all over again, I would read more of the assigned reading in my classes. I barely ever read anything at home. In hindsight, this was a big mistake. Class isn’t just about taking notes, you have to get involved and make yourself well known to the teacher. And it is a lot easier to study for tests when you have actually read what it is going to be about, rather than cramming the notes you have copied without actually understanding what they mean. These are all lessons I will use to my advantage next semester.
I don’t think I have changed all that much from my first semester at Baruch. I am still the same person. One thing that has changed for me is that by living alone, I am now more independent. I have gone through many weeks without seeing or even hearing from my parents, whom I used to see everyday back in high school days. Also, I’ve always hung around the city so I always knew it pretty well, but living in it has been an awesome experience and I learn more and more about it everyday.

Community Service Self Evaluation – Philip Kubiak
- My Light the Night community service work helped the community by supporting those who were walking to fight leukemia and lymphoma, by showing them that there are people who care for their cause and support their event, and by showing them in which direction the walk continues.
- I was initially not too enthusiastic when I heard about the project, as I had just spent a whole 2 months providing community service during my senior year.
- I wanted to let the walkers know that there are many people who stand by their cause, and whether it is an event organizer or a student in college, anybody can give a little of their tie to show support.
- I learned that as the fight against cancer continues, survivors stay strong together, no matter if it be against lymphoma or leukemia.
- The most trying experience was waiting for the walkers to start coming my way. In order to participate in community service, you have to be patient.
- Engaging in this project definitely related to a large issue in society as cancer is an unavoidable sickness that is unfortunately common in our lives.
- Participation in any community service event is an example of leadership and service.
- Having this experience with survivors of leukemia and lymphoma, my view on these has become more personal.
- I think about leukemia and lymphoma on a more personal level after walking and providing service to the survivors and supporters who participated.
10. I was satisfied with the experience because I gave back to the community, completed a requirement for class, and was able to enjoy a nice view on the Brooklyn Bridge.
11. I will be staying involved with the community throughout life because it is impossible to detach yourself from something that is all around you, and it is becoming more common place in our society to give to society.
12. Survivors of Leukemia and Lymphoma have an impact on the mind of a student.

Monologue- by Phil Kubiak
The way I want to come off to people is… not a jerk. Its simple to me: no matter what the circumstance or situation, be nice, be friendly. There’s a lot of mean people out there, even at Baruch. But don’t let them get in the way, man. I guess, in my honest opinion, the point of life is to make money, be happy with your woman or man, raise your kids well, and don’t be an a-hole. But if you think about it, that last part is the most important part! It ties into everything, it makes it all possible. It makes life easy. It makes people around you happy, but come on, who really cares about them? More importantly, it lets you be happy. Don’t be a jerk and others won’t be a jerk to you. Easy! This is how I see it. To make money, get a job. To get a job, be smart, be organized, be… whatever you have to be. But foremost, don’t be an ass. Especially to the guys who are going to pay you. And unless you want to be miserable and lonely at the office every single day, be nice to the guys you work with, too. Make them laugh, bring them coffee, buy them a drink at the pub after work. Pretty soon, word will begin to spread. “Hey, you know that new guy Phil? Yeah, he’s not a jerk. He’s actually a nice guy!” “Oh yeah, I know him! He brought bagels to work last Monday. Really friendly guy, that Phil.” The point of life is to be friendly. To be a nice guy. Or a nice girl. But if you’re a guy, don’t try to be a nice girl. It’s a very difficult process.
I try to play the role of a gentleman. Who doesn’t like a gentleman? I try to show respect to everybody. Sometimes that’s very very very VERY hard. Seriously, some people don’t deserve respect. But you just gotta look them in the eye and squeeze their hand really tight when you shake it and smile at them anyway. To all those jerks out there, I have a message foryou. If you would prefer to be an ass in life, then good luck to you man! I wish you the best. Go ahead and do whatever it is you want to do. Just don’t expect anything from me, dude. I’ve done my fair share of giving up seats on the subway to people who I’m not 100% sure are actually pregnant, helping people up stairs with strollers while theres an elevator five feet away, saying thank you to cashiers who don’t give me enough change, tipping slow delivery people, explaining directions to clueless tourists, recycling when it would be sooooo much easier to just throw it in the damn trash, coming to a complete stop at STOP signs when there’s nobody around, and yadda yadda yadda. So don’t tire me with your B.S., okay? I’m out to treat people well, so if you’re a jerk, please, and thank you, and get the hell out of my way.

Who I think I Am- By Phil Kubiak
Whattup. My name is Philip Kubiak. But who am I really? The truth is that I can’t answer that question with 100% confidence at this point. College is a time of finding out more about yourself than you ever have before, and one of my major concerns is whether I will find something that interests me here at Baruch, as in something I would consider pursuing as a career. Everybody has expectations for college, I’m not the only one who hopes Baruch doesn’t fall short in the long run. Another thing that concerns me thats more down to Earth is whether I will have enough dough in my pocket to party in NYC. Baruch is similar to high school so far, it reminds me of when I moved to a new town three years ago. This first year of college will definitely change me. I guess I hope I will be more major oriented at the end of the year.
